Le paludisme dans les suites des interventions chirurgicales en région endémique
La fréquence de l'accès palustre dans les suites des interventions chirurgicales a été observée pendant trois mois, en 1992, dans le service de chirurgie de l'hôpital de Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) où 6% des cent vingt opérés ont présenté un accès palustre, tous dus à #Plasmodium falciparum, pendant les cinq jours suivant l'intervention. Ce groupe ne présentait pas de caractéristique médicale ou sociale par rapport aux autres opérés. La fréquence de l'accès palustre dans les suites des interventions semble être souvent surestimée. O-GlcNAc modification blocks the aggregation and toxicity of the protein α-synuclein associated with Parkinson's disease.
Several aggregation-prone proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases can be modified by O-linked N-acetyl-glucosamine (O-GlcNAc) in vivo. One of these proteins, α-synuclein, is a toxic aggregating protein associated with synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease. However, the effect of O-GlcNAcylation on α-synuclein is not clear. Here, we use synthetic protein chemistry to generate both unmodified α-synuclein and α-synuclein bearing a site-specific O-GlcNAc modification at the physiologically relevant threonine residue 72. We show that this single modification has a notable and substoichiometric inhibitory effect on α-synuclein aggregation, while not affecting the membrane binding or bending properties of α-synuclein. O-GlcNAcylation is also shown to affect the phosphorylation of α-synuclein in vitro and block the toxicity of α-synuclein that was exogenously added to cells in culture. These results suggest that increasing O-GlcNAcylation may slow the progression of synucleinopathies and further support a general function for O-GlcNAc in preventing protein aggregation
Cross-linguistic study of vocal pathology: perceptual features of spasmodic dysphonia in French-speaking subjects
Clinical characterisation of Spasmodic Dysphonia of the adductor type (SD) in French speakers by Klap and colleagues (1993) appears to differ from that of SD in English. This perceptual analysis aims to describe the phonetic features of French SD. A video of 6 French speakers with SD supplied by Klap and colleagues was analysed for frequency of phonatory breaks, pitch breaks, harshness, creak, breathiness and falsetto voice, rate of production, and quantity of speech output. In contrast to English SD, the French speaking SD patients demonstrated no evidence pitch breaks, but phonatory breaks, harshness and breathiness were prominent features. This verifies the French authors’ (1993) clinical description. These findings suggest that phonetic properties of a specific language may affect the manifestation of pathology in neurogenic voice disorders
Conditions for Adiabatic Spin Transport in Disordered Systems
We address the controversy concerning the necessary conditions for the
observation of Berry phases in disordered mesoscopic conductors. For this
purpose we calculate the spin-dependent conductance of disordered
two-dimensional structures in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields.
Our numerical results show that for both, the overall conductance and quantum
corrections, the relevant parameter defining adiabatic spin transport scales
with the square root of the number of scattering events, in generalization of
Stern's original proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1022 (1992)]. This could hinder
a clear-cut experimental observation of Berry phase effects in diffusive
