An annotated checklist of Wisconsin sap and short-winged flower beetles (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae, Kateretidae)
A survey of Wisconsin Nitidulidae and Kateretidae yielded 78 species through analysis of literature records, museum and private collections, and three years of field research (2000-2002). Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. Literature and distributional records suggest at least 11 additional nitidulid species may occur in Wisconsin
An Annotated Checklist of Wisconsin Handsome Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Endomychidae)
The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidinbaited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examination of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be confirmed. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized
Searching for an anomalous coupling via single top quark production at a collider
We investigate the potential of a high-energy collider to
detect an anomalous coupling from observation of the reaction
, , where or . We find that with
-tagging and suitable kinematic cuts this process should be observable if
the anomalous coupling is no less than about 0.05/TeV, where
is the scale of new physics associated with the anomalous
interaction. This improves upon the bound possible from observation of top
decays at the Tevatron.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 1 PS figur
A List of Wisconsin Springtails With New Records and Annotations (Hexapoda: Parainsecta: Collembola)
Twenty Collembola species new to Wisconsin were collected from soil at two agricultural sites in southern Wisconsin, including an undescribed species of Isotomidae. The state faunal list now contains 52 species representing seven families
Dynamics of gap solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate on a three-dimensional optical lattice
We suggest and study the stable disk- and cigar-shaped gap solitons of a
dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of Cr atoms localized in the lowest
band gap by three optical-lattice (OL) potentials along orthogonal directions.
The one-dimensional version of these solitons of experimental interest confined
by an OL along the dipole moment direction and harmonic traps in transverse
directions is also considered. Important dynamics of (i) breathing oscillation
of a gap soliton upon perturbation and (ii) dragging of a gap soliton by a
moving lattice along axial direction demonstrates the stability of gap
solitons. A movie clip of dragging of three-dimensional gap soliton is
included.Comment: To see the dragging movie clip please download sourc
Stroboscopic Generation of Topological Protection
Trapped neutral atoms offer a powerful route to robust simulation of complex
quantum systems. We present here a stroboscopic scheme for realization of a
Hamiltonian with -body interactions on a set of neutral atoms trapped in an
addressable optical lattice, using only 1- and 2-body physical operations
together with a dissipative mechanism that allows thermalization to finite
temperature or cooling to the ground state. We demonstrate this scheme with
application to the toric code Hamiltonian, ground states of which can be used
to robustly store quantum information when coupled to a low temperature
reservoir.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Published versio
