Improved fire-resistant coatings
Water-base coatings containing potassium silicate show improvement in areas of quick air-drying, crack, craze, and abrasion resistance, adherence, and leach resistance. Coatings are useful as thermal-barrier layers in furnaces, and as general purpose fire resistant surfaces where vapor impermeability is not a requirement

Water-resource records of Brevard County, Florida
The U. S. Geological Survey made a comprehensive
investigation of the water resources of Brevard County
from 1954 to 1958. The purposes of this investigation were:
(1) to determine the occurrence and chemical quality of
water in the streams and lakes, (2) to determine the location
and the thickness of aquifers, and (3) to determine the
occurrence and chemical quality of the ground water. During
the period from 1933 to 1954, water records were collected
from a few stream-gaging stations and a few observation
wells. The purpose of this report is to present basic data
collected during these investigations. (Document has 188 pages.
Chiral mixed phase in disordered 3d Heisenberg models
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we compute the spin stiffness of a site-random
3d Heisenberg model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
interactions. Our results for the pure limit yield values of the the critical
temperature and the critical exponent in excellent agreement with
previous high precision studies. In the disordered case, a mixed "chiral" phase
is found which may be in the same universality class as 3d Heisenberg spin
glasses.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in PRB Rapid Communication
A Non-Demolition Single Spin Meter
We present the theory of a single spin meter consisting of a quantum dot in a
magnetic field under microwave irradiation combined with a charge counter. We
show that when a current is passed through the dot, a change in the average
occupation number occurs if the microwaves are resonant with the on-dot Zeeman
splitting. The width of the resonant change is given by the microwave induced
Rabi frequency, making the quantum dot a sensitive probe of the local magnetic
field and enabling the detection of the state of a nearby spin. If the dot-spin
and the nearby spin have different g-factors a non-demolition readout of the
spin state can be achieved. The conditions for a reliable spin readout are
found.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Start-to-end modelling of a mode-locked optical klystron free electron laser amplifier
A free electron laser (FEL) in a mode-locked optical klystron (MLOK) configuration is modelled using start-to-end simulations that simulate realistic electron beam acceleration and transport before input into a full three-dimensional FEL simulation code. These simulations demonstrate that the MLOK scheme is compatible with the present generation of radiofrequency accelerator designs. A train of few-optical cycle pulses is predicted with peak powers similar to those of the equivalent conventional FEL amplifier. The role of electron beam energy modulation in these results is explained and the limitations of some simulation codes discussed. It is shown how seeding the FEL interaction using a High Harmonic seed laser can improve the coherence properties of the output
