Comment on "Raman spectroscopy study of NaxCoO2 and superconducting NaxCoO2 yH2O"
The effect of surface degradation of the thermolectric cobaltite on Raman
spectra is discussed and compared to experimental results from Co3O4 single
crystals. We conclude that on NaCl flux grown NaxCoO2 crystals a surface layer
of Co3O4 easily forms that leads to the observation of an intense phonon around
700 cm-1 [Phys. Rev. B 70, 052502 (2004)]. Raman spectra on freshly cleaved
crystals from optical floating zone ovens do not show such effects and have a
high frequency phonon cut-off at approximately 600 cm -1 [Phys. Rev. Lett 96,
167204 (2006)]. We discuss the relation of structural dimensionality,
electronic correlations and the high frequency phonon cut-off of the
thermolectric cobaltite.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Phys. Rev. B (2007
Raman light scattering study and microstructural analysis of epitaxial films of the electron-doped superconductor La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}
We present a detailed temperature-dependent Raman light scattering study of
optical phonons in molecular-beam-epitaxy-grown films of the electron-doped
superconductor La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} close to optimal doping (x ~ 0.08, T_c =
29 K and x ~ 0.1, T_c = 27 K). The main focus of this work is a detailed
characterization and microstructural analysis of the films. Based on
micro-Raman spectroscopy in combination with x-ray diffraction,
energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, some of the
observed phonon modes can be attributed to micron-sized inclusions of Cu_{2}O.
In the slightly underdoped film (x ~ 0.08), both the Cu_{2}O modes and others
that can be assigned to the La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} matrix show pronounced
softening and narrowing upon cooling below T ~ T_c. Based on control
measurements on commercial Cu_{2}O powders and on a comparison to prior Raman
scattering studies of other high-temperature superconductors, we speculate that
proximity effects at La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}/Cu_{2}O interfaces may be
responsible for these anomalies. Experiments on the slightly overdoped
La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} film (x ~ 0.1) did not reveal comparable phonon
anomalies.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Electron-phonon vertex in the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model
Using quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we study the effects of electronic
correlations on the effective electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling in a
two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model. We consider a momentum-independent bare
ionic el-ph coupling. In the weak- and intermediate-correlation regimes, we
find that the on-site Coulomb interaction acts to effectively suppress the
ionic el-ph coupling at all electron- and phonon- momenta. In this regime, our
numerical simulations are in good agreement with the results of perturbation
theory to order . However, entering the strong-correlation regime, we find
that the forward scattering process stops decreasing and begins to
substantially increase as a function of , leading to an effective el-ph
coupling which is peaked in the forward direction. Whereas at weak and
intermediate Coulomb interactions, screening is the dominant correlation effect
suppressing the el-ph coupling, at larger values irreducible vertex
corrections become more important and give rise to this increase. These vertex
corrections depend crucially on the renormalized electronic structure of the
strongly correlated system.Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps-figures, minor change
The Superconductivity, Intragrain Penetration Depth and Meissner Effect of RuSr2(Gd,Ce)2Cu2O10+delta
The hole concentration (p)(delta), the transition temperature Tc, the
intragrain penetration depth lambda, and the Meissner effect were measured for
annealed RuSr2(Gd,Ce)2Cu2O10+delta samples. The intragrain superconducting
transition temperature Tc} varied from 17 to 40 K while the p changed by only
0.03 holes/CuO2. The intragrain superfluid-density 1/lambda^2 and the
diamagnetic drop of the field-cooled magnetization across Tc (the Meissner
effect), however, increased more than 10 times. All of these findings are in
disagreement with both the Tc vs. p and the Tc vs. 1/lambda^2 correlations
proposed for homogeneous cuprates, but are in line with a possible
phase-separation and the granularity associated with it.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B (May 2,

Charge transfer fluctuation, wave superconductivity, and the Raman phonon in the Cuprates: A detailed analysis
The Raman spectrum of the phonon in the superconducting cuprate
materials is investigated theoretically in detail in both the normal and
superconducting phases, and is contrasted with that of the phonon. A
mechanism involving the charge transfer fluctuation between the two oxygen ions
in the CuO plane coupled to the crystal field perpendicular to the plane is
discussed and the resulting electron-phonon coupling is evaluated. Depending on
the symmetry of the phonon the weight of different parts of the Fermi surface
in the coupling is different. This provides the opportunity to obtain
information on the superconducting gap function at certain parts of the Fermi
surface. The lineshape of the phonon is then analyzed in detail both in the
normal and superconducting states. The Fano lineshape is calculated in the
normal state and the change of the linewidth with temperature below T is
investigated for a pairing symmetry. Excellent agreement is
obtained for the phonon lineshape in YBaCuO. These
experiments, however, can not distinguish between and a
highly anisotropic -wave pairing.Comment: Revtex, 21 pages + 4 postscript figures appended, tp
Hole concentration and phonon renormalization in Ca-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_y (6.76 < y < 7.00)
In order to access the overdoped regime of the YBa_2Cu_3O_y phase diagram, 2%
Ca is substituted for Y in YBa_2Cu_3O_y (y = 7.00,6.93,6.88,6.76). Raman
scattering studies have been carried out on these four single crystals.
Measurements of the superconductivity-induced renormalization in frequency
(Delta \omega) and linewidth (\Delta 2\gamma) of the 340 cm^{-1} B_{1g} phonon
demonstrate that the magnitude of the renormalization is directly related to
the hole concentration (p), and not simply the oxygen content. The changes in
\Delta \omega with p imply that the superconducting gap (\Delta_{max})
decreases monotonically with increasing hole concentration in the overdoped
regime, and \Delta \omega falls to zero in the underdoped regime. The linewidth
renormalization \Delta 2\gamma is negative in the underdoped regime, crossing
over at optimal doping to a positive value in the overdoped state.Comment: 18 pages; 5 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. B Oct. 24, 2002 (BX8292
On the effect of heterovalent substitutions in ruthenocuprates
We discuss the properties of superconducting derivatives of the RuSr2GdCu2O8
(1212-type) ruthenocuprate, for which heterovalent doping has been achieved
through partial substitution of Cu ions into the RuO2 planes
(Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-d, 0<x<0.75, Tcmax=72 K for x=0.3-0.4) and Ce ions into the
Gd sites (RuSr2Gd1-yCeyCu2O8, 0<y<0.1). The measurements of XANES, thermopower,
and magnetization under external pressure reveal an underdoped character of all
compounds. Muon spin rotation experiments indicate the presence of magnetic
order at low temperatures (Tm=14-2 K for x=0.1-0.4). Properties of these two
series lead us to the qualitative phase diagram for differently doped 1212-type
ruthenocuprates. The difference in temperature of magnetic ordering found for
superconducting and non-superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 is discussed in the
context of the properties of substituted compounds. The high pressure oxygen
conditions required for synthesis of Ru1-xSr2RECu2+xO8-d, have been extended to
synthesis of a Ru1-xSr2Eu2-yCeyCu2+xO10-d series. The Cu->Ru doping achieved in
these phases is found to decrease the temperature for magnetic ordering as well
the volume fraction of the magnetic phase.Comment: Proceedings of the 3rd Polish-US Workshop on Magnetism and

Anomalous Self-Energy Effects of the B_1g Phonon in Y_{1-x}(Pr,Ca)_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 Films
In Raman spectra of cuprate superconductors the gap shows up both directly,
via a redistribution of the electronic background, the so-called "2Delta
peaks", and indirectly, e.g. via the renormalization of phononic excitations.
We use a model that allows us to study the redistribution and the related
phonon self-energy effects simultaneously. We apply this model to the B_1g
phonon of Y_{1-x}(Pr,Ca)_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 films, where Pr or Ca substitution
enables us to investigate under- and overdoped samples. While various
self-energy effects can be explained by the strength and energy of the 2\Delta
peaks, anomalies remain. We discuss possible origins of these anomalies.Comment: 6 pages including 4 figure
C-axis lattice dynamics in Bi-based cuprate superconductors
We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in
single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer
Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both
experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and
theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework
of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and
short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable
ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and
Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes
of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve
good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental
values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable
phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also
present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g
symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is
based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The
superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis
infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are
consistently explained with the suggested assignment.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figure
A study of the superconducting gap in RNiBC (R = Y, Lu) single crystals by inelastic light scattering
Superconductivity-induced changes in the electronic Raman scattering response
were observed for the RNiBC (R = Y, Lu) system in different scattering
geometries. In the superconducting state, 2-like peaks were observed in
A, B, and B spectra from single crystals. The peaks in
A and B symmetries are significantly sharper and stronger than
the peak in B symmetry. The temperature dependence of the frequencies of
the 2-like peaks shows typical BCS-type behavior, but the apparent
values of the gap are strongly anisotropic for both systems. In
addition, for both YNiBC and LuNiBC systems, there exists
reproducible scattering strength below the gap which is roughly
linear to the frequency in B and B symmetries. This discovery of
scattering below the gap in non-magnetic borocarbide superconductors, which are
thought to be conventional BCS-type superconductors, is a challenge for current
understanding of superconductivity in this system.Comment: Added text, changed a figure, and added references. Will appear in
