The Two Modes of Visual Processing: Implications for Spatial Orientation
The roles of the focal and ambient visual systems in spatial orientation are discussed. The two modes are defined and compared. The contribution of each system is illustrated through examples such as spatial disorientation/motion sickness, vehicle guidance/night driving, visual narrowing under stress/cortical brain damage, and aircraft instrumentation. Emphasis is placed on the need for testing procedures for the ambient system
Semirelativistic stability of N-boson systems bound by 1/r pair potentials
We analyze a system of self-gravitating identical bosons by means of a
semirelativistic Hamiltonian comprising the relativistic kinetic energies of
the involved particles and added (instantaneous) Newtonian gravitational pair
potentials. With the help of an improved lower bound to the bottom of the
spectrum of this Hamiltonian, we are able to enlarge the known region for
relativistic stability for such boson systems against gravitational collapse

Energy-momentum conservation in pre-metric electrodynamics with magnetic charges
A necessary and sufficient condition for energy-momentum conservation is
proved within a topological, pre-metric approach to classical electrodynamics
including magnetic as well as electric charges. The extended Lorentz force,
consisting of mutual actions by F=(E, B) on the electric current and G=(H, D)
on the magnetic current, can be derived from an energy-momentum "potential" if
and only if the constitutive relation G=G(F) satisfies a certain vanishing
condition. The electric-magnetic reciprocity introduced by Hehl and Obukhov is
seen to define a complex structure on the tensor product of 2-form pairs (F,G)
which is independent of but consistent with the Hodge star operator defined by
any Lorentzian metric. Contrary to a recent claim in the literature, it does

Effective Theories for Circuits and Automata
Abstracting an effective theory from a complicated process is central to the
study of complexity. Even when the underlying mechanisms are understood, or at
least measurable, the presence of dissipation and irreversibility in
biological, computational and social systems makes the problem harder. Here we
demonstrate the construction of effective theories in the presence of both
irreversibility and noise, in a dynamical model with underlying feedback. We
use the Krohn-Rhodes theorem to show how the composition of underlying
mechanisms can lead to innovations in the emergent effective theory. We show
how dissipation and irreversibility fundamentally limit the lifetimes of these
emergent structures, even though, on short timescales, the group properties may
be enriched compared to their noiseless counterparts.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

The assessment of efforts to return to work in the European Union
Background: Assessment of efforts to promote return-to-work (RTW) includes all efforts (vocational and non-vocational) designed to improve the work ability of the sick-listed employee and increase the chance to return to work. Aim of the study was to investigate whether in 13 European countries these RTW efforts are assessed and to compare the procedures by means of six criteria. METHODS: Data were gathered in the taxonomy project of the European Union of Medicine in Assurance and Social Security and by means of an additional questionnaire. RESULTS: In seven countries RTW efforts are subject of the assessment in relation to the application for disability benefits. Description of RTW efforts is a prerequisite in five countries. Guidelines on the assessment of RTW efforts are only available in the Netherlands and no countries report the use of the ICF model. Based on the results of the additional questionnaire, the assessor is a social scientist or a physician. The information used to assess RTW efforts differs, from a report on the RTW process to medical information. A negative outcome of the assessment leads to delay of the application for disability benefits or to application for rehabilitation subsidy. Conclusion: RTW efforts are assessed in half of the participating European countries. When compared, the characteristics of the assessment of RTW efforts in the participating European countries show both similarities and differences. This study may facilitate the gathering and exchange of knowledge and experience between countries on the assessment of RTW efforts
Direct approach to the problem of strong local minima in Calculus of Variations
The paper introduces a general strategy for identifying strong local
minimizers of variational functionals. It is based on the idea that any
variation of the integral functional can be evaluated directly in terms of the
appropriate parameterized measures. We demonstrate our approach on a problem of
W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima--a slight weakening of the classical notion
of strong local minima. We obtain the first quasiconvexity-based set of
sufficient conditions for W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima.Comment: 26 pages, no figure
Temporal Stream Logic: Synthesis beyond the Bools
Reactive systems that operate in environments with complex data, such as
mobile apps or embedded controllers with many sensors, are difficult to
synthesize. Synthesis tools usually fail for such systems because the state
space resulting from the discretization of the data is too large. We introduce
TSL, a new temporal logic that separates control and data. We provide a
CEGAR-based synthesis approach for the construction of implementations that are
guaranteed to satisfy a TSL specification for all possible instantiations of
the data processing functions. TSL provides an attractive trade-off for
synthesis. On the one hand, synthesis from TSL, unlike synthesis from standard
temporal logics, is undecidable in general. On the other hand, however,
synthesis from TSL is scalable, because it is independent of the complexity of
the handled data. Among other benchmarks, we have successfully synthesized a
music player Android app and a controller for an autonomous vehicle in the Open
Race Car Simulator (TORCS.
Participation and satisfaction after spinal cord injury: results of a vocational and leisure outcome study
Study design: Survey. Objectives: Insight in (1) the changes in participation in vocational and leisure activities and (2) satisfaction with the current participation level of people with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) after reintegration in society. Design: Descriptive analysis of data from a questionnaire. Setting: Rehabilitation centre with special department for patients with SCIs, Groningen, The Netherlands. Subjects: A total of 57 patients with traumatic SCI living in the community, who were admitted to the rehabilitation centre two to 12 years before the current assessment. Main outcome measures: Changes in participation in activities; current life satisfaction; support and unmet needs. Results: Participation expressed in terms of hours spent on vocational and leisure activities changed to a great extent after the SCI. This was mainly determined by a large reduction of hours spent on paid work. While 60% of the respondents successfully reintegrated in work, many changes took place in the type and extent of the job. Loss of work was partially compensated with domestic and leisure activities. Sports activities were reduced substantially. The change in participation level and compensation for the lost working hours was not significantly associated with the level of SCI-specific health problems and disabilities. As was found in other studies, most respondents were satisfied with their lives. Determinants of a negative life satisfaction several years following SCI were not easily indicated. Reduced quality of life was particularly related to an unsatisfactory work and leisure situation. Conclusions: Most people with SCI in this study group were able to resume work and were satisfied with their work and leisure situation
âIâd rather wait and see whatâs around the cornerâ: a multi-perspective qualitative study of treatment escalation planning in frailty
Introduction People living with frailty risk adverse outcomes following even minor illnesses. Admission to hospital or the intensive care unit is associated with potentially burdensome interventions and poor outcomes. Decision-making during an emergency is fraught with complexity and potential for conflict between patients, carers and clinicians. Advance care planning is a process of shared decision-making which aims to ensure patients are treated in line with their wishes. However, planning for future care is challenging and those living with frailty are rarely given the opportunity to discuss their preferences. The aim of the ProsPECT (Prospective Planning for Escalation of Care and Treatment) study was to explore perspectives on planning for treatment escalation in the context of frailty. We spoke to people living with frailty, their carers and clinicians across primary and secondary care. Methods In-depth online or telephone interviews and online focus groups. The topic guide explored frailty, acute decision-making and planning for the future. Data were thematically analysed using the Framework Method. Preliminary findings were presented to a sample of study participants for feedback in two online workshops. Results We spoke to 44 participants (9 patients, 11 carers and 24 clinicians). Four main themes were identified: frailty is absent from treatment escalation discussions, planning for an uncertain future, escalation in an acute crisis is âthe path of least resistanceâ, and approaches to facilitating treatment escalation planning in frailty. Conclusion Barriers to treatment escalation planning include a lack of shared understanding of frailty and uncertainty about the future. Emergency decision-making is focussed on survival or risk aversion and patient preferences are rarely considered. To improve planning discussions, we recommend frailty training for non-specialist clinicians, multi-disciplinary support, collaborative working between patients, carers and clinicians as well as broader public engagement
