Infall near clusters of galaxies: comparing gas and dark matter velocity profiles
We consider the dynamics in and near galaxy clusters. Gas, dark matter and
galaxies are presently falling into the clusters between approximately 1 and 5
virial radii. At very large distances, beyond 10 virial radii, all matter is
following the Hubble flow, and inside the virial radius the matter particles
have on average zero radial velocity. The cosmological parameters are imprinted
on the infall profile of the gas, however, no method exists, which allows a
measurement of it. We consider the results of two cosmological simulations
(using the numerical codes RAMSES and Gadget) and find that the gas and dark
matter radial velocities are very similar. We derive the relevant dynamical
equations, in particular the generalized hydrostatic equilibrium equation,
including both the expansion of the Universe and the cosmological background.
This generalized gas equation is the main new contribution of this paper. We
combine these generalized equations with the results of the numerical
simulations to estimate the contribution to the measured cluster masses from
the radial velocity: inside the virial radius it is negligible, and inside two
virial radii the effect is below 40%, in agreement the earlier analyses for DM.
We point out how the infall velocity in principle may be observable, by
measuring the gas properties to distance of about two virial radii, however,

Reply to "Comment on Evidence for the droplet picture of spin glasses"
Using Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) and the Migdal-Kadanoff approximation
(MKA), Marinari et al. study in their comment on our paper the link overlap
between two replicas of a three-dimensional Ising spin glass in the presence of
a coupling between the replicas. They claim that the results of the MCS
indicate replica symmetry breaking (RSB), while those of the MKA are trivial,
and that moderate size lattices display the true low temperature behavior. Here
we show that these claims are incorrect, and that the results of MCS and MKA
both can be explained within the droplet picture.Comment: 1 page, 1 figur
Analysis of the effectiveness of industrial R and D
The criteria used by private industry in evaluating and selecting proposed research and development projects for implementation, and also in determining which R and D facilities are to be acquired were investigated. Conceptual and practical issues inherent in any quantitative analysis of the contribution of R and D to economic growth were identified in order to assist NASA in developing approaches for analzying the economic implication of its own R and D efforts
Quantifying the Effect of Non-Larmor Motion of Electrons on the Pressure Tensor
In space plasma, various effects of magnetic reconnection and turbulence
cause the electron motion to significantly deviate from their Larmor orbits.
Collectively these orbits affect the electron velocity distribution function
and lead to the appearance of the "non-gyrotropic" elements in the pressure
tensor. Quantification of this effect has important applications in space and
laboratory plasma, one of which is tracing the electron diffusion region (EDR)
of magnetic reconnection in space observations. Three different measures of
agyrotropy of pressure tensor have previously been proposed, namely,
, and . The multitude of contradictory measures has
caused confusion within the community. We revisit the problem by considering
the basic properties an agyrotropy measure should have. We show that
, and are all defined based on the sum of the
principle minors (i.e. the rotation invariant ) of the pressure tensor. We
discuss in detail the problems of -based measures and explain why they may
produce ambiguous and biased results. We introduce a new measure
constructed based on the determinant of the pressure tensor (i.e. the rotation
invariant ) which does not suffer from the problems of -based
measures. We compare with other measures in 2 and 3-dimension
particle-in-cell magnetic reconnection simulations, and show that can
effectively trace the EDR of reconnection in both Harris and force-free current
sheets. On the other hand, does not show prominent peaks in
the EDR and part of the separatrix in the force-free reconnection simulations,
demonstrating that does not measure all the non-gyrotropic
effects in this case, and is not suitable for studying magnetic reconnection in
more general situations other than Harris sheet reconnection.Comment: accepted by Phys. of Plasm
Nonlinear Evolution of the Genus Statistics with Zel'dovich Approximation
Evolution of genus density is calculated from Gaussian initial conditions
using Zel'dovich approximation. A new approach is introduced which formulates
the desired quantity in a rotationally invariant manner. It is shown that
normalized genus density does not depend on the initial spectral shape but is a

Technology utilization in a non-urban region: Further impact and technique of the Technology Use Studies Center
Updated information pertaining to clients who receive and use information disseminated by the Technology Use Studies Center (TUSC) is reported. Charts are provided which indicate TUSC's performance in information dissemination and technical assistance in terms of quantities of searches accomplished during several contract years. The faculty information service is described, along with details of cooperation with other agencies. Specific searches are listed according to subject, client, and client location, and a measure of client response to services provided is indicated by the included selection of transfer and impact reports. The impetus behind the formation of the general aviation news letter is also described
Technology utilization
Documentation is presented for selected transfer and impact reports provided to the business community, government agencies, and such other requestors as schools, universities, and health services. Statistical data are also included on the characteristics of the TUSC technical searches

The clientele served by the Technology Use Studies Center (TUSC) is updated. Manufacturing leads the list of client firms. The standard industrial classification (SIC) range of these firms is broad. Substantial numbers of college and university faculties are using TUSC services. Field operations inherent in the functions of dissemination and assistance are reviewed. Increasing emphasis among clientele is on environmental concerns and management. A record is provided of the institutions contacted and the extent of TUSC involvement with them, as well as TUSC's cooperation with agencies and organizations. The impact of TUSC and the NASA-sponsored Technology Utilization Program on other public agencies is discussed
