Studies of Error Sources in Geodetic VLBI
Achieving the goal of millimeter uncertainty in three dimensional geodetic positioning on a global scale requires significant improvement in the precision and accuracy of both random and systematic error sources. For this investigation we proposed to study errors due to instrumentation in Very Long Base Interferometry (VLBI) and due to the atmosphere. After the inception of this work we expanded the scope to include assessment of error sources in GPS measurements, especially as they affect the vertical component of site position and the measurement of water vapor in the atmosphere. The atmosphere correction 'improvements described below are of benefit to both GPS and VLBI
19. ON THE EVOLUTION AND PHYLOGEOGRAPHY OF THE SOUTHEASTERN SPECIES OF THE GENUS DALEA (FABACEAE) USING A MOLECULAR PHYLOGENETIC APPROACH.
Dalea (Fabaceae) is a genus of small, herbaceous, perennial dicots that consists of approximately 160 species with a few species being geographically widespread, and most of the genus being endemic to restricted areas with calcareous substrates containing high levels of calcium carbonate. A previous study (McMahon and Hufford, 2004) looked at the phylogeny and genetic makeup of the tribe which Dalea belongs to, Amorpheae, and one other phylogenetic study (Diggs, 2013) has been conducted on the genus itself. This study focuses on the phylogeny and phylogeography of Dalea species from the Gulf Coastal Plain of Florida, including D. carnea, D. carthagenesis var. floridana, D. feayi, D. pinnata var. pinnata,D. pinnata var. trifoliata, D. adenopoda, D. mountjoyae, and D. albida. Phylogeny for Dalea will determined by DNA sequences amplified through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) of the chloroplast trnK/matK intron, and the nuclear ribosomal introns ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2, and compared to sequences obtained from previous phylogenetic studies of Dalea. Currently, no results have been ascertained, but samples have been collected and the DNA extracted.

Mechanical Stress and Antioxidant Protection in the Retina of Hindlimb Suspended Rats
It has been postulated that hindlimb suspension (HS) causes a cephalad fluid shift in quadrupeds similar to that occurring to humans in microgravity. Therefore, HS may provide a suitable animal model in which to recapitulate the ocular changes observed in the human Visual Impairment and Intracranial Pressure (VIIP) syndrome. This work reports preliminary results from a tissue sharing project using 34 week-old Brown Norway rats. Two different experiments compared normal posture controls and HS rats for 2 weeks and rats exposed to HS for 2 weeks but allowed to recover in normal posture for 2 additional weeks. The effects of two nutritional countermeasures, green tea extract (GT) and plant polyphenol resveratrol (Rv), were also evaluated. Green tea contains the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). qPCR gene expression analysis of selected targets was performed on RNA from isolated retinas, and histologic analysis was done on one fixed eye per rat. The transcription factor early growth response protein 1 (Egr1) was upregulated almost 2-fold in HS retinas relative to controls (P = 0.059), and its expression returned to control levels after 2 weeks of recovery in normal posture (P = 0.023). HS-induced upregulation of Egr1 was attenuated (but not significantly) in retinas from rats fed an antioxidant rich (GT extract) diet. In rats fed the GT-enriched diet, antioxidant enzymes were induced, evidenced by the upregulation of the gene heme oxygenase 1 (Hmox1) (P = 0.042) and the gene superoxide dismutase 2 (Sod2) (P = 0.0001). Egr1 is a stretch-activated transcription factor, and the Egr1 mechanosensitive response to HS may have been caused by a change in the translaminal pressure and/or mechanical deformation of the eye globe. The observed histologic measurements of the various retinal layers in the HS rats were lower in value than those of the control animal (n = 1), however insufficient data were available for statistical analysis. Aquaporin 4, a water-selective channel involved in interstitial fluid homeostasis, showed an upregulated trend in HS retinas; however, these results are preliminary. Total retinal thickness increased significantly (P = 0.049) in HS rats fed a resveratrol enriched diet compared to HS rats on a normal diet. This change appeared to be reversed during the 2 weeks of recovery post HS, but no differences in retina thickness were observed between HS animals and HS recovered animals when both groups consumed a normal diet. The reversibility of the increase in retinal thickness induced by resveratrol during HS may therefore reflect an interaction between the stress provoked by HS and the cytoprotective mechanisms elicited by resveratro
A Survey for Transient Astronomical Radio Emission at 611 MHz
We have constructed and operated the Survey for Transient Astronomical Radio
Emission (STARE) to detect transient astronomical radio emission at 611 MHz
originating from the sky over the northeastern United States. The system is
sensitive to transient events on timescales of 0.125 s to a few minutes, with a
typical zenith flux density detection threshold of approximately 27 kJy. During
18 months of around-the-clock observing with three geographically separated
instruments, we detected a total of 4,318,486 radio bursts. 99.9% of these
events were rejected as locally generated interference, determined by requiring
the simultaneous observation of an event at all three sites for it to be
identified as having an astronomical origin. The remaining 3,898 events have
been found to be associated with 99 solar radio bursts. These results
demonstrate the remarkably effective RFI rejection achieved by a coincidence
technique using precision timing (such as GPS clocks) at geographically
separated sites. The non-detection of extra-solar bursting or flaring radio
sources has improved the flux density sensitivity and timescale sensitivity
limits set by several similar experiments in the 1970s. We discuss the
consequences of these limits for the immediate solar neighborhood and the
discovery of previously unknown classes of sources. We also discuss other
possible uses for the large collection of 611 MHz monitoring data assembled by

The psychological interaction of spam email features
This study explored distinct perceptual and decisional contributions to spam email mental construal. Participants classified spam emails according to pairings of three stimulus features – presence or absence of awkward prose, abnormal message structure, and implausible premise. We examined dimensional interactions within general recognition theory (GRT; a multidimensional extension of signal detection theory). Classification accuracy was highest for categories containing either two non-normal dimension levels (e.g. awkward prose and implausible premise) or two normal dimension levels (e.g. normal prose and plausible premise). Modelling indicated both perceptual and decisional contributions to classification responding. In most cases, perceptual discriminability was higher along one dimension when stimuli contained a non-normal level of the paired dimension (e.g. prose discriminability was higher with abnormal structure). Similarly, decision criteria along one dimension were biased in favour of the non-normal response when stimuli contained a non-normal level of the paired dimension. Potential applications for training are discussed
A 23 GHz Survey of GRB Error Boxes
The Haystack 37-meter telescope was used in a pilot project in May 1995 to
observe GRB error boxes at 23~GHz. Seven BATSE error boxes and two IPN arcs
were scanned by driving the beam of the telescope rapidly across their area.
For the BATSE error boxes, the radio observations took place two to eighteen
days after the BATSE detection, and several boxes were observed more than once.
Total power data were recorded continuously as the telescope was driven at a
rate of 0.2~degrees/second, yielding Nyquist sampling of the beam with an
integration time of 50~milliseconds, corresponding to a theoretical rms
sensitivity of 0.5~Jy. Under conditions of good weather, this sensitivity was
achieved. In a preliminary analysis of the data we detect only two sources,
3C273 and 0552+398, both catalogued sources that are known to be variable at
23~GHz. Neither had a flux density that was unusally high or low at the time of
