Investigation of the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation
Recently the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA) has been
introduced by Jarrell and Krishnamurthy for describing the electronic structure
of substitutionally disordered systems. The NLCPA provides systematic
corrections to the widely used coherent-potential approximation (CPA) whilst
preserving the full symmetry of the underlying lattice. Here an analytical and
systematic numerical study of the NLCPA is presented for a one-dimensional
tight-binding model Hamiltonian, and comparisons with the embedded cluster
method (ECM) and molecular coherent potential approximation (MCPA) are made.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Thin-film flow in helically wound shallow channels of arbitrary cross-sectional shape
We consider the steady, gravity-driven flow of a thin film of viscous fluid down a helically wound shallow channel of arbitrary cross-sectional shape with arbitrary torsion and curvature. This extends our previous work [D. J. Arnold et al., “Thin-film flow in helically-wound rectangular channels of arbitrary torsion and curvature,” J. Fluid Mech. 764, 76–94 (2015)] on channels of rectangular cross section. The Navier-Stokes equations are expressed in a novel, non-orthogonal coordinate system fitted to the channel bottom. By assuming that the channel depth is small compared to its width and that the fluid depth in the vertical direction is also small compared to its typical horizontal extent, we are able to solve for the velocity components and pressure analytically. Using these results, a differential equation for the free surface shape is obtained, which must in general be solved numerically. Motivated by the aim of understanding flows in static spiral particle separators used in mineral processing, we investigate the effect of cross-sectional shape on the secondary flow in the channel cross section. We show that the competition between gravity and inertia in non-rectangular channels is qualitatively similar to that in rectangular channels, but that the cross-sectional shape has a strong influence on the breakup of the secondary flow into multiple clockwise-rotating cells. This may be triggered by small changes to the channel geometry, such as one or more bumps in the channel bottom that are small relative to the fluid depth. In contrast to the secondary flow which is quite sensitive to small bumps in the channel bottom, the free-surface profile is relatively insensitive to these. Empty spaces and the value of symbols: Estonia's 'war of monuments' from another angle
Taking as its point of departure the recent heightened discussion surrounding publicly sited monuments in Estonia, this article investigates the issue from the perspective of the country's eastern border city of Narva, focusing especially upon the restoration in 2000 of a 'Swedish Lion' monument to mark the 300th anniversary of Sweden's victory over Russia at the first Battle of Narva. This commemoration is characterised here as a successful local negotiation of a potentially divisive past, as are subsequent commemorations of the Russian conquest of Narva in 1704. A recent proposal to erect a statue of Peter the Great in the city, however, briefly threatened to open a new front in Estonia's ongoing 'war of monuments'. Through a discussion of these episodes, the article seeks to link the Narva case to broader conceptual issues of identity politics, nationalism and post-communist transition
Contested resources: unions, employers, and the adoption of new work practices in US and UK telecommunications
The pattern of adoption of high-performance work practices has been explained in terms of strategic contingency and in terms of union presence. We compare the post-deregulation/privatization changes in work practice at AT&T, Bell Atlantic and British Telecom. On the basis of these cases, we argue that the choice of new work practices should be understood as a consequence not only of the company's resources or changes in its environment, nor of a simple union presence, but also as a consequence of the practices' effects on union power, the nature of the union's engagement, and the union's strategic choices
The Relationship Between HR Practices and Firm Performance: Examining Causal Order
Significant research attention has been devoted to examining the relationship between HR practices and firm performance, and the research support has assumed HR as the causal variable. Using data from 45 business units (with 62 data points), this study examines how measures of HR practices correlate with past, concurrent, and future operational performance measures. The results indicate that correlations with performance measures at all three times are both high and invariant, and that controlling for past or concurrent performance virtually eliminates the correlation of HR with future performance. Implications are discussed
The Einstein-Vlasov sytem/Kinetic theory
The main purpose of this article is to guide the reader to theorems on global
properties of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system. This system couples
Einstein's equations to a kinetic matter model. Kinetic theory has been an
important field of research during several decades where the main focus has
been on nonrelativistic- and special relativistic physics, e.g. to model the
dynamics of neutral gases, plasmas and Newtonian self-gravitating systems. In
1990 Rendall and Rein initiated a mathematical study of the Einstein-Vlasov
system. Since then many theorems on global properties of solutions to this
system have been established. The Vlasov equation describes matter
phenomenologically and it should be stressed that most of the theorems
presented in this article are not presently known for other such matter models
(e.g. fluid models). The first part of this paper gives an introduction to
kinetic theory in non-curved spacetimes and then the Einstein-Vlasov system is
introduced. We believe that a good understanding of kinetic theory in
non-curved spacetimes is fundamental in order to get a good comprehension of

Building trust in agribusiness supply chains: A conceptual model of buyer-seller relationships in the seed potato industry in Asia
In the absence of a certified seed system, potato farmers in Asia must purchase replacement seed tubers from an informal seed system. With no third party assurance that the seed tubers purchased are of good quality, the farmer's decision to purchase seeds may be influenced by the long-standing relationships that have been established between buyers and sellers. Trust is the critical determinant of a good buyer-seller relationship. Through maintaining communication and the making of various relationship specific investments, a conceptual model is proposed which suggests that seed suppliers may engage in trust building behavior which should result in the preferred seed supplier enjoying a greater share of the farmer's patronage
Stable Models of Elliptical Galaxies
We construct stable axially symmetric models of elliptical galaxies. The
particle density on phase space for these models depends monotonically on the
particle energy and on the third component of the angular momentum. They are
obtained as minimizers of suitably defined energy-Casimir functionals, and this
implies their nonlinear stability. Since our analysis proceeds from a rigorous
but purely mathematical point of view it should be interesting to determine if
any of our models match observational data in astrophysics. The main purpose of
these notes is to initiate some exchange of information between the
