Electro-optic scanning of light coupled from a corrugated LiNbO3 waveguide
Light diffracted from a grating output coupler in a Ti-diffused LiNbO3 waveguide is scanned electro-optically. Using a coupling length of 2.5 mm in our arrangement we have demonstrated a scanning capability of one resolved spot per 3 V/µm applied field
Phases and phase stabilities of Fe3X alloys (X=Al, As, Ge, In, Sb, Si, Sn, Zn) prepared by mechanical alloying
Mechanical alloying with a Spex 8000 mixer/mill was used to prepare several alloys of the Fe3X composition, where the solutes X were from groups IIB, IIIB, IVB, and VB of the periodic table. Using x-ray diffractometry and Mössbauer spectrometry, we determined the steady-state phases after milling for long times. The tendencies of the alloys to form the bcc phase after milling are predicted well with the modified usage of a Darken–Gurry plot of electronegativity versus metallic radius. Thermal stabilities of some of these phases were studied. In the cases of Fe3Ge and Fe3Sn, there was the formation of transient D03 and B2 order during annealing, although this ordered structure was replaced by equilibrium phases upon further annealing
Testing Linearity in Cointegrating Relations with an Application to Purchasing Power Parity
This paper develops a linearity test that can be applied to cointegrating relations. We consider the widely used RESET specification test and show that when this test is applied to nonstationary time series its asymptotic distribution involves a mixture of noncentral chi^2 distributions, which leads to severe size distortions in conventional testing based on the central chi^2. Nonstationarity is shown to introduce two bias terms in the limit distribution, which are the source of the size distortion in testing. Appropriate corrections for this asymptotic bias leads to a modified version of the RESET test which has a central chi^2 limit distribution under linearity. The modified test has power not only against nonlinear cointegration but also against the absence of cointegration. Simulation results reveal that the modified test has good size infinite samples and reasonable power against many nonlinear models as well as models with no cointegration, confirming the analytic results. In an empirical illustration, the linear purchasing power parity (PPP) specification is tested using US, Japan, and Canada monthly data after Bretton Woods. While commonly used ADF and PP cointegration tests give mixed results on the presence of linear cointegration in the series, the modified test rejects the null of linear PPP cointegration.Nonlinear cointegration, Specification test, RESET test, Noncentral chi^2 distribution
Micro Balloon Actuators for Aerodynamic Control
A robust, large-force, large-deflection micro balloon actuator for aerodynamic (manoeuvring) control of transonic aircraft has been developed. Using a novel process, high yield linear arrays of silicone balloons on a robust silicon substrate have been fabricated that can deflect vertically in excess of one mm. Balloon actuators have been tested under cyclic conditions to assess reliability. The actuators have been characterized in a wind tunnel to assess their suitability as aerodynamic control surfaces and flight-tested on a jet fighter to assess their resistance to varied temperatures and pressures at high velocity
Broad-band grating filters for thin-film optical waveguides
Broad-band grating filters have been fabricated on glass thin-film waveguides and evaluated with a tunable dye laser. Measured and calculated filter responses were found to be in good agreement. Grating filters with bandwidths of 300 and 150 Ă…, and reflectivities of 18 and 40%, respectively, are reported
Synthesis and structural characterization of 2Dioxane.2H2O.CuCl2: metal-organic compound with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chains
A novel organometallic compound 2Dioxane.CuCl2.2H2O has been synthesized and
structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Magnetic susceptibility
and zero-field inelastic neutron scattering have also been used to study its
magnetic properties. It turns out that this material is a weakly coupled
one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain system with chain
direction along the crystallographic c axis and the nearest-neighbor
intra-chain exchange constant J=0.85(4) meV. The next-nearest-neighbor
inter-chain exchange constant J' is also estimated to be 0.05 meV. The observed
magnetic excitation spectrum from inelastic neutron scattering is in excellent
agreement with numerical calculations based on the Muller ansatz.Comment: 4 pages; 5 figure
Elastic electron scattering by ethyl vinyl ether
We report measured and calculated results for elastic scattering of low-energy electrons by ethyl vinyl ether (ethoxyethene), a prototype system for studying indirect dissociative attachment processes that may play a role in DNA damage. The integral cross section displays the expected π* shape resonance. The agreement between the calculated and measured cross sections is generally good
Colossal negative magnetoresistance in dilute fluorinated graphene
Adatoms offer an effective route to modify and engineer the properties of
graphene. In this work, we create dilute fluorinated graphene using a clean,
controlled and reversible approach. At low carrier densities, the system is
strongly localized and exhibits an unexpected, colossal negative
magnetoresistance. The zero-field resistance is reduced by a factor of 40 at
the highest field of 9 T and shows no sign of saturation. Unusual "staircase"
field dependence is observed below 5 K. The magnetoresistance is highly
anisotropic. We discuss possible origins, considering quantum interference
