    The Role of Retiree Health Insurance in the Employment Behavior of Older Men

    We model the employment and medical care decisions of older men who face health risk. The budget constraint incorporates detailed characteristics of health insurance as well as Social Security and private pensions. A man whose health insurance is tied to continued employment with his current employer faces the risk of large medical expenditures in the event of an adverse health shock if he retires before becoming eligible for Medicare at age 65. A man whose employer provides retiree health insurance or who has access to other health insurance not tied to his employment decision (e.g., from his wife) can retire before age 65 without consequences for his health insurance coverage. We use data from the Health and Retirement Survey to estimate the parameters of the model using structural methods. Simulations based on the estimates imply that changes in health insurance, including access and restrictions to retiree health insurance and Medicare have a modest impact on employment behavior among older males.

    Euclidean D-branes and higher-dimensional gauge theory

    We consider euclidean D-branes wrapping around manifolds of exceptional holonomy in dimensions seven and eight. The resulting theory on the D-brane---that is, the dimensional reduction of 10-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory---is a cohomological field theory which describes the topology of the moduli space of instantons. The 7-dimensional theory is an N_T = 2 (or balanced) cohomological theory given by an action potential of Chern-Simons type. As a by-product of this method, we construct a related cohomological field theory which describes the monopole moduli space on a 7-manifold of G_2 holonomy.Comment: 23 pages (some changes in section 4.5 -- equations 27 and 28 change slightly) (missing bibliography added!

    Fretting wear of Ti(CxNy) PVD coatings under variable environmental conditions

    Fretting wear as a specific type of degradation is defined as an oscillatory motion at small amplitude between two nominally stationary solid bodies in mutual contact. Under external stresses the interface is being damaged by debris generation and its successive ejections outside the contact area. A potential protection against fretting damage by means of hard coatings is being offered by different surface engineering techniques. For this study TiC, TiN and TiCN hard coatings manufactured by a PVD method have been selected and tested against smooth polycrystalline alumina ball. A fretting test programme has been carried out at the frequency of 5Hz, 100N normal load, 100µm displacement amplitude and at three values of a relative humidity: 10, 50 and 90% at 295-298K temperature. It turned out that the intensity of wear process was depending not only on loading conditions but on environmental ones as well. A significant impact of RH on wear rate and friction behaviour of the coatings under investigation has been observed. Two different damage mechanisms have been identified and related to the phenomena of debris oxidation and debris adhesion to the counterbody surface. In the latter case the debris deposited onto the surface of the alumina ball lead to a change of stress distribution at the interface and as a result to accelerated wear. In this work experiments with variable relative humidity increasing from 10% to 90% within 1 a single fretting test have been completed. It follows from these experiments that there exists an intermediate value of the RH at which the friction coefficient changes rapidly. Finally a dissipated energy approach has been applied in the work in order to quantify and compare fretting wear rates of different hard coatings

    A residue formula which evaluates any correlation function of topological SUnSU_n Yang-Mills theory with arbitrary magnetic flux insertion in two dimensions are obtained. Deformations of the system by two form operators are investigated in some detail. The method of the diagonalization of a matrix valued field turns out to be useful to compute various physical quantities.     Penrose Limits of the Baryonic D5-brane

    The Penrose limits of a D5-brane wrapped on the sphere of AdS_5 x S^5 and connected to the boundary by M fundamental strings, which is dual to the baryon vertex of the N=4 SU(M) super Yang-Mills theory, are investigated. It is shown that, for null geodesics that lead to the maximally supersymmetric Hpp-wave background, the resulting D5-brane is a 1/2-supersymmetric null brane. For an appropriate choice of radial geodesic, however, the limiting configuration is 1/4-supersymmetric and closely related to the Penrose limit of a flat space BIon.Comment: LaTeX, 1+18 pages, 1 figure; v2: obvious misquotation of the number of preserved supersymmetries correcte

    M-theory on a Time-dependent Plane-wave

    We propose a matrix model on a homogeneous plane-wave background with 20 supersymmetries. This background is anti-Mach type and is equivalent to the time-dependent background. We study supersymmetries in this theory and calculate the superalgebra. The vacuum energy of the abelian part is also calculated.     2D Yang-Mills Theory as a Matrix String Theory

    Quantization of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal leads to twisted sectors that are completely analogous to the ones that originate long string states in Matrix String Theory. If these sectors are taken into account the partition function is different from the standard one found in the literature and the invariance of the theory under modular transformations of the torus appears to hold in a stronger sense. The twisted sectors are in one-to-one correspondence with the coverings of the torus without branch points, so they define by themselves a string theory. A possible duality between this string theory and the Gross-Taylor string is discussed, and the problems that one encounters in generalizing this approach to interacting strings are pointed out.     We analyse two issues that arise in the context of (matrix) string theories in plane wave backgrounds, namely (1) the use of Brinkmann- versus Rosen-variables in the quantum theory for general plane waves (which we settle conclusively in favour of Brinkmann variables), and (2) the regularisation of the quantum dynamics for a certain class of singular plane waves (discussing the benefits and limitations of regularisations of the plane-wave metric itself).Comment: 29 page

    Supersymmetric Yang-Mills, octonionic instantons and triholomorphic curves

    In four-dimensional gauge theory there exists a well-known correspondence between instantons and holomorphic curves, and a similar correspondence exists between certain octonionic instantons and triholomorphic curves. We prove that this latter correspondence stems from the dynamics of various dimensional reductions of ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. More precisely we show that the dimensional reduction of the (5+1)-dimensional supersymmetric sigma model with hyperkaehler (but otherwise arbitrary) target X to a four-dimensional hyperkaehler manifold M is a topological sigma model localising on the space of triholomorphic maps M -> X (or hyperinstantons). When X is the moduli space M_K of instantons on a four-dimensional hyperkaehler manifold K, this theory has an interpretation in terms of supersymmetric gauge theory. In this case, the topological sigma model can be understood as an adiabatic limit of the dimensional reduction of ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills on the eight-dimensional manifold M x K of holonomy Sp(1) x Sp(1) in Spin(7), which is a cohomological theory localising on the moduli space of octonionic instantons.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX2e (A comment and a corresponding acknowledgement added and a reference ammended
