A mixed-mode shell-model theory for nuclear structure studies
We introduce a shell-model theory that combines traditional spherical states,
which yield a diagonal representation of the usual single-particle interaction,
with collective configurations that track deformations, and test the validity
of this mixed-mode, oblique basis shell-model scheme on Mg. The correct
binding energy (within 2% of the full-space result) as well as low-energy
configurations that have greater than 90% overlap with full-space results are
obtained in a space that spans less than 10% of the full space. The results
suggest that a mixed-mode shell-model theory may be useful in situations where
competing degrees of freedom dominate the dynamics and full-space calculations
are not feasible.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, revtex 12p
SU(3) symmetry breaking in lower fp-shell nuclei
Results of shell-model calculations for lower fp-shell nuclei show that SU(3)
symmetry breaking in this region is driven by the single-particle spin-orbit
splitting. However, even though states of the yrast band exhibit SU(3) symmetry
breaking, the results also show that the yrast band B(E2) values are
insensitive to this fragmentation of the SU(3) symmetry; specifically, the
quadrupole collectivity as measured by B(E2) transition strengths between low
lying members of the yrast band remain high even though SU(3) appears to be
broken. Results for and using the Kuo-Brown-3
two-body interaction are given to illustrate these observations.Comment: Updated to the published versio
Shell model description of normal parity bands in odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei
The low-energy spectra and B(E2) electromagnetic transition strengths of
159Eu, 159Tb and 159Dy are described using the pseudo SU(3) model. Normal
parity bands are built as linear combinations of SU(3) states, which are the
direct product of SU(3) proton and neutron states with pseudo spin zero (for
even number of nucleons) and pseudo spin 1/2 (for odd number of nucleons). Each
of the many-particle states have a well-defined particle number and total
angular momentum. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle
energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three
rotor terms which are diagonal in the SU(3) basis. The pseudo SU(3) model is
shown to be a powerful tool to describe odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, Accepted to be published in Phys. Rev.
Effective one-dimensionality of AC hopping conduction in the extreme disorder limit
It is argued that in the limit of extreme disorder AC hopping is dominated by
"percolation paths". Modelling a percolation path as a one-dimensional path
with a sharp jump rate cut-off leads to an expression for the universal AC
conductivity, that fits computer simulations in two and three dimensions better
than the effective medium approximation.Comment: 6 postscript figure
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody lateral flow assay for antibody prevalence studies following vaccination: a diagnostic accuracy study
Background: Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are able to achieve affordable, large scale antibody testing and provide rapid results without the support of central laboratories. As part of the development of the REACT programme extensive evaluation of LFIA performance was undertaken with individuals following natural infection. Here we assess the performance of the selected LFIA to detect antibody responses in individuals who have received at least one dose of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine. Methods: This was a prospective diagnostic accuracy study. Sampling was carried out at renal outpatient clinic and healthcare worker testing sites at Imperial College London NHS Trust. Two cohorts of patients were recruited; the first was a cohort of 108 renal transplant patients attending clinic following two doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, the second cohort comprised 40 healthcare workers attending for first SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and subsequent follow up. During the participants visit, finger-prick blood samples were analysed on LFIA device, while paired venous sampling was sent for serological assessment of antibodies to the spike protein (anti-S) antibodies. Anti-S IgG was detected using the Abbott Architect SARS-CoV-2 IgG Quant II CMIA. A total of 186 paired samples were collected. The accuracy of Fortress LFIA in detecting IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 compared to anti-spike protein detection on Abbott Assay Results: The LFIA had an estimated sensitivity of 92.0% (114/124; 95% confidence interval [CI] 85.7% to 96.1%) and specificity of 93.6% (58/62; 95% CI 84.3% to 98.2%) using the Abbott assay as reference standard (using the threshold for positivity of 7.10 BAU/ml) Conclusions: Fortress LFIA performs well in the detection of antibody responses for intended purpose of population level surveillance but does not meet criteria for individual testing
Cancer prevalence in the United Kingdom: estimates for 2008
BACKGROUND: Identifying and addressing the requirements of cancer survivors is currently a high priority for the NHS, yet little is known about the population of cancer survivors in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Data from cancer registries in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were analysed to provide limited-duration prevalence estimates for 2004. Log-linear regression models were used to extend these to complete prevalence estimates. Trends in prevalence from 2000 to 2004 were used to project complete prevalence estimates forward from 2004 to 2008. RESULTS: We estimated that in total, there were 2 million cancer survivors in the United Kingdom at the end of 2008, approximately 3% of the population overall and 1 in 8 of those aged 65 years and more. Prostate and female breast cancers were the most prevalent. The number of cancer survivors is increasing by approximately 3% each year. Estimates are also provided by time since diagnosis. CONCLUSION: These estimates are the most up-to-date available, and as such will be useful for statutory and voluntary sector organisations that are responsible for planning and providing treatment and support to cancer survivors in the United Kingdom

Polymorphisms in the WNK1 gene are asociated with blood pressure variation and urinary potassium excretion
WNK1 - a serine/threonine kinase involved in electrolyte homeostasis and blood pressure (BP) control - is an excellent candidate gene for essential hypertension (EH). We and others have previously reported association between WNK1 and BP variation. Using tag SNPs (tSNPs) that capture 100% of common WNK1 variation in HapMap, we aimed to replicate our findings with BP and to test for association with phenotypes relating to WNK1 function in the British Genetics of Hypertension (BRIGHT) study case-control resource (1700 hypertensive cases and 1700 normotensive controls). We found multiple variants to be associated with systolic blood pressure, SBP (7/28 tSNPs min-p = 0.0005), diastolic blood pressure, DBP (7/28 tSNPs min-p = 0.002) and 24 hour urinary potassium excretion (10/28 tSNPs min-p = 0.0004). Associations with SBP and urine potassium remained significant after correction for multiple testing (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01 respectively). The major allele (A) of rs765250, located in intron 1, demonstrated the strongest evidence for association with SBP, effect size 3.14 mmHg (95%CI:1.23–4.9), DBP 1.9 mmHg (95%CI:0.7–3.2) and hypertension, odds ratio (OR: 1.3 [95%CI: 1.0–1.7]).We genotyped this variant in six independent populations (n = 14,451) and replicated the association between rs765250 and SBP in a meta-analysis (p = 7×10−3, combined with BRIGHT data-set p = 2×10−4, n = 17,851). The associations of WNK1 with DBP and EH were not confirmed. Haplotype analysis revealed striking associations with hypertension and BP variation (global permutation p10 mmHg reduction) and risk for hypertension (OR<0.60). Our data indicates that multiple rare and common WNK1 variants contribute to BP variation and hypertension, and provide compelling evidence to initiate further genetic and functional studies to explore the role of WNK1 in BP regulation and EH
Shell Model Monte Carlo studies of neutron-rich nuclei in the 1s-0d-1p-0f shells
We demonstrate the feasibility of realistic Shell-Model Monte Carlo (SMMC)
calculations spanning multiple major shells, using a realistic interaction
whose bad saturation and shell properties have been corrected by a newly
developed general prescription. Particular attention is paid to the approximate
restoration of translational invariance. The model space consists of the full
sd-pf shells. We include in the study some well-known T=0 nuclei and several
unstable neutron-rich ones around N=20,28. The results indicate that SMMC can
reproduce binding energies, B(E2) transitions, and other observables with an
interaction that is practically parameter free. Some interesting insight is
gained on the nature of deep correlations. The validity of previous studies is
confirmed.Comment: 22 pages + 7 postscript figure
