Korringa ratio of ferromagnetically correlated impure metals

The Korringa ratio, K\cal K, obtained by taking an appropriate combination of the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, is calculated at finite temperature, TT, in the three-dimensional electron gas model, including the electron-electron interaction, UU, and non-magnetic impurity scatterings. K\cal K varies in a simple way with respect to UU and TT; it decreases as UU is increased but increases as TT is raised. However, K\cal K varies in a slightly more complicated way with respect to the impurity scatterings; as the scattering rate is increased, K\cal K increases for small UU and low TT, but decreases for large UU or high TT regime. This calls for a more careful analysis when one attempts to estimate the Stoner factor from K\cal K.Comment: 7 pages including 3 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. B, Dec.

Spin Transition in Strongly Correlated Bilayer Two Dimensional Electron Systems

    Get PDF
Using a combination of heat pulse and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques we demonstrate that the phase boundary separating the interlayer phase coherent quantum Hall effect at νT=1\nu_T = 1 in bilayer electron gases from the weakly coupled compressible phase depends upon the spin polarization of the nuclei in the host semiconductor crystal. Our results strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the transition is attended by a change in the electronic spin polarization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figur

Unpolarized quasielectrons and the spin polarization at filling fractions between 1/3 and 2/5

We prove that for a hard core interaction the ground state spin polarization in the low Zeeman energy limit is given by P=2/ν5P=2/\nu-5 for filling fractions in the range 1/3ν2/5 1/3 \leq\nu\leq 2/5 . The same result holds for a Coulomb potential except for marginally small magnetic fields. At the magnetic fields B<20TB<20T unpolarized quasielectrons can manifest themselves by a characteristic peak in the I-V characteristics for tunneling between two ν=1/3\nu=1/3 ferromagnets.Comment: 8 pages, Latex. accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

What Does The Korringa Ratio Measure?

    Get PDF
We present an analysis of the Korringa ratio in a dirty metal, emphasizing the case where a Stoner enhancement of the uniform susceptibilty is present. We find that the relaxation rates are significantly enhanced by disorder, and that the inverse problem of determining the bare density of states from a study of the change of the Knight shift and relaxation rates with some parameter, such as pressure, has rather constrained solutions, with the disorder playing an important role. Some preliminary applications to the case of chemical substitution in the Rb3x_{3-x}Kx_x C60_{60} family of superconductors is presented and some other relevant systems are mentioned.Comment: 849, Piscataway, New Jersey 08855 24 June 199

Anisotropy of Magnetoresistance Hysteresis around the ν=2/3\nu=2/3 Quantum Hall State in Tilted Magnetic Field

We present an anisotropy of the hysteretic transport around the spin transition point at Landau level filling factor ν=2/3\nu=2/3 in tilted magnetic field. When the direction of the in-plane component of the magnetic field BB_{\parallel} is normal to the probe current II, a strong hysteretic transport due to the current-induced nuclear spin polarization occurs. When BB_{\parallel} is parallel to II, on the other hand, the hysteresis almost disappears. We also demonstrate that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T11T_{1}^{-1} at the transition point increases with decreasing angle between the directions of BB_{\parallel} and II. These results suggest that the morphology of electron spin domains around ν=2/3\nu =2/3 is affected by the current direction.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Spin Polarizations at and about the Lowest Filled Landau Level

The spin polarization versus temperature at or near a fully filled lowest Landau level is explored for finite-size systems in a periodic rectangular geometry. Our results at ν=1\nu=1 which also include the finite-thickness correction are in good agreement with the experimental results. We also find that the interacting electron system results are in complete agreement with the results of the sigma model, i.e., skyrmions on a torus have a topological charge of Q2Q \ge 2 and the Q=1 solution is like a single spin-flip excitation. Our results therefore provide direct evidence for the skyrmionic nature of the excitations at this filling factor.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, and 4 .ps files, To be published in Europhysics Letter

A suggested search for 207Pb nuclear Schiff moment in PbTiO3 ferroelectric

We suggest two types of experiments, NMR and macroscopic magnetometry, with solid PbTiO3 to search for the nuclear Schiff moment of 207Pb. Both kinds of experiments promise substantial improvement over the presently achieved sensitivities. Statistical considerations show that the improvement of the current sensitivity can be up to 10 orders of magnitude for the magnetometry experiment and up to 6 orders of magnitude for the NMR experiment. Such significant enhancement is due to the strong internal electric field of the ferroelectric, as well as due to the possibility to cool the nuclear-spin subsystem in the compound down to nanokelvin temperatures.Comment: 4 pages; revised sensitivity estimate for NMR experimen

Berry Phase Generation and Measurement in a Single Trapped Ion

In this work, we propose a new design of an ion trap which can enable us to generate state specific Berry phase in a single trapped ion. Such a design will enable us to study the physics at the boundary of abelian and non-abelian symmetries and can also have significant impact in quantum computation

Dynamic nuclear polarization at the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas

We have used gated GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures to explore nonlinear transport between spin-resolved Landau level (LL) edge states over a submicron region of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The current I flowing from one edge state to the other as a function of the voltage V between them shows diode-like behavior---a rapid increase in I above a well-defined threshold V_t under forward bias, and a slower increase in I under reverse bias. In these measurements, a pronounced influence of a current-induced nuclear spin polarization on the spin splitting is observed, and supported by a series of NMR experiments. We conclude that the hyperfine interaction plays an important role in determining the electronic properties at the edge of a 2DEG.Comment: 8 pages RevTeX, 7 figures (GIF); submitted to Phys. Rev.

Resistance spikes and domain wall loops in Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets

We explain the recent observation of resistance spikes and hysteretic transport properties in Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets in terms of the unique physics of their domain walls. Self-consistent RPA/Hartree-Fock theory is applied to microscopically determine properties of the ground state and domain-wall excitations. In these systems domain wall loops support one-dimensional electron systems with an effective mass comparable to the bare electron mass and may carry charge. Our theory is able to account quantitatively for the experimental Ising critical temperature and to explain characteristics of the resistive hysteresis loops.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
