Quantum secret sharing with qudit graph states
We present a unified formalism for threshold quantum secret sharing using
graph states of systems with prime dimension. We construct protocols for three
varieties of secret sharing: with classical and quantum secrets shared between

Molecular spectrum of TSHβ subunit gene defects in central hypothyroidism in the UK and Ireland.
OBJECTIVE: Homozygous mutations in the TSH beta subunit gene (TSHB) result in severe, isolated, central congenital hypothyroidism (CCH). This entity evades diagnosis in TSH-based congenital hypothyroidism (CH) screening programmes in the UK and Ireland. Accordingly, genetic diagnosis, enabling ascertainment of affected relatives in families, is critical for prompt diagnosis and treatment of the disorder. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Four cases of isolated TSH deficiency from three unrelated families in the UK and Ireland were investigated for mutations or deletions in TSHB. Haplotype analysis, to investigate a founder effect, was undertaken in cases with identical mutations (c.373delT). RESULTS: Two siblings in kindred 1 were homozygous for a previously described TSHB mutation (c.373delT). In kindreds 2 and 3, the affected individuals were compound heterozygous for TSHB c.373delT and either a 5·4-kB TSHB deletion (kindred 2, c.1-4389_417*195delinsCTCA) or a novel TSHB missense mutation (kindred 3, c.2T>C, p.Met1?). Neurodevelopmental retardation, following delayed diagnosis and treatment, was present in 3 cases. In contrast, the younger sibling in kindred 1 developed normally following genetic diagnosis and treatment from birth. CONCLUSIONS: This study, including the identification of a second, novel, TSHB deletion, expands the molecular spectrum of TSHB defects and suggests that allele loss may be a commoner basis for TSH deficiency than previously suspected. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of profound central hypothyroidism in such cases result in neurodevelopmental retardation. Inclusion of thyroxine (T4) plus thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), or free thyroxine (FT4) in CH screening, together with genetic case ascertainment enabling earlier therapeutic intervention, could prevent such adverse sequelae.Wellcome Trust (Grant IDs: 100585/Z/12/Z, 095564/Z/11/Z), National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre CambridgeThis is the final version of the article. The Ellipticity of the Disks of Spiral Galaxies
The disks of spiral galaxies are generally elliptical rather than circular.
The distribution of ellipticities can be fit with a log-normal distribution.
For a sample of 12,764 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release
1 (SDSS DR1), the distribution of apparent axis ratios in the i band is best
fit by a log-normal distribution of intrinsic ellipticities with ln epsilon =
-1.85 +/- 0.89. For a sample of nearly face-on spiral galaxies, analyzed by
Andersen and Bershady using both photometric and spectroscopic data, the best
fitting distribution of ellipticities has ln epsilon = -2.29 +/- 1.04. Given
the small size of the Andersen-Bershady sample, the two distribution are not
necessarily inconsistent. If the ellipticity of the potential were equal to
that of the light distribution of the SDSS DR1 galaxies, it would produce 1.0
magnitudes of scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation, greater than is observed.
The Andersen-Bershady results, however, are consistent with a scatter as small
as 0.25 magnitudes in the Tully-Fisher relation.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures; ApJ, accepte
Radio Spectra of Giant Radio Galaxies from RATAN-600 Data
Measurements of the flux densities of the extended components of seven giant
radio galaxies obtained using the RATAN-600 radio telescope at wavelengths of
6.25 and 13 cm ar e presented. The spectra of components of these radio
galaxies are constructed using these new RA TAN-600 data together with data
from the WENSS, NVSS, and GB6 surveys. The spectral indices in the stu died
frequency range are calculated, and the need for detailed estimates of the
integrated contributi on of such objects to the background emission is

Chandra Discovery of a 300 kpc X-ray Jet in the GPS Quasar PKS1127-145
We have discovered an X-ray jet with Chandra imaging of the z=1.187
radio-loud quasar PKS1127-145. In this paper we present the Chandra X-ray data,
follow-up VLA observations, and optical imaging using the HST WFPC2. The X-ray
jet contains 273+/-5 net counts in 27ksec and extends ~30 arcsec, from the
quasar core, corresponding to a minimum projected linear size of ~330/h_50 kpc.
The evaluation of the X-ray emission processes is complicated by the observed
offsets between X-ray and radio brightness peaks. We discuss the problems posed
by these observations to jet models. In addition, PKS1127-145 is a Giga-Hertz
Peaked Spectrum radio source, a member of the class of radio sources suspected
to be young or ``frustrated'' versions of FRI radio galaxies. However the
discovery of an X-ray and radio jet extending well outside the host galaxy of
PKS1127-145 suggests that activity in this and other GPS sources may be

Holomorphic transforms with application to affine processes
In a rather general setting of It\^o-L\'evy processes we study a class of
transforms (Fourier for example) of the state variable of a process which are
holomorphic in some disc around time zero in the complex plane. We show that
such transforms are related to a system of analytic vectors for the generator
of the process, and we state conditions which allow for holomorphic extension
of these transforms into a strip which contains the positive real axis. Based
on these extensions we develop a functional series expansion of these
transforms in terms of the constituents of the generator. As application, we
show that for multidimensional affine It\^o-L\'evy processes with state
dependent jump part the Fourier transform is holomorphic in a time strip under
some stationarity conditions, and give log-affine series representations for

A Formal Study of the Privacy Concerns in Biometric-Based Remote Authentication Schemes
With their increasing popularity in cryptosystems, biometrics have attracted more and more attention from the information security community. However, how to handle the relevant privacy concerns remains to be troublesome. In this paper, we propose a novel security model to formalize the privacy concerns in biometric-based remote authentication schemes. Our security model covers a number of practical privacy concerns such as identity privacy and transaction anonymity, which have not been formally considered in the literature. In addition, we propose a general biometric-based remote authentication scheme and prove its security in our security model
Swift BAT Survey of AGN
We present the results of the analysis of the first 9 months of data of the
Swift BAT survey of AGN in the 14-195 keV band. Using archival X-ray data or
follow-up Swift XRT observations, we have identified 129 (103 AGN) of 130
objects detected at |b|> 15 deg and with significance >4.8 sigma. One source
remains unidentified. These same X-ray data have allowed measurement of the
X-ray properties of the objects. We fit a power law to the log N - log S
distribution, and find the slope to be 1.42+/-0.14. Characterizing the
differential luminosity function data as a broken power law, we find a break
luminosity log L_*(erg/s) = 43.85+/-0.26, a low luminosity power law slope
a=0.84^{+0.16}_{-0.22}, and a high luminosity power law slope
b=2.55^{+0.43}_{-0.30}, similar to the values that have been reported based on
INTEGRAL data. We obtain a mean photon index 1.98 in the 14-195 keV band, with
an rms spread of 0.27. Integration of our luminosity function gives a local
volume density of AGN above 10^{41} erg/s of 2.4x10^{-3}/Mpc^3, which is about
10% of the total luminous local galaxy density above M_*=-19.75. We have
obtained X-ray spectra from the literature and from Swift XRT follow-up
observations. These show that the distribution of log n_H is essentially flat
from n_H=10^{20}/cm^{2} to 10^{24}/cm^2, with 50% of the objects having column
densities of less than 10^{22}/cm^{2}. BAT Seyfert galaxies have a median
redshift of 0.03, a maximum log luminosity of 45.1, and approximately half have

3C236: Radio Source, Interrupted?
We present new HST STIS/MAMA near-UV images and archival WFPC2 V and R band
images which reveal the presence of four star forming regions in an arc along
the edge of the dust lane in the giant (4 Mpc) radio galaxy 3C236. Two of the
star forming regions are relatively young with ages of order 1E7 yr, while the
other two are older with ages of order 1E8 - 1E9 yr which is comparable to the
estimated age of the giant radio source. Based on dynamical and spectral aging
arguments, we suggest that the fuel supply to the AGN was interrupted for 1E7
yr and has now been restored, resulting in the formation of the inner 2 kpc
scale radio source. This time scale is similar to that of the age of the
youngest of the star forming regions. We suggest that the transport of gas in
the disk is non-steady and that this produces both the multiple episodes of
star formation in the disk as well as the multiple epochs of radio source
activity. If the inner radio source and the youngest star forming region are
related by the same event of gas transport, the gas must be transported from
the hundreds of pc scale to the sub-parsec scale on a time scale of 1E7 yr,
which is similar to the dynamical time scale of the gas on the hundreds of pc
scales
Implied volatility of basket options at extreme strikes
In the paper, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of the implied
volatility of a basket call option at large and small strikes in a variety of
settings with increasing generality. First, we obtain an asymptotic formula
with an error bound for the left wing of the implied volatility, under the
assumption that the dynamics of asset prices are described by the
multidimensional Black-Scholes model. Next, we find the leading term of
asymptotics of the implied volatility in the case where the asset prices follow
the multidimensional Black-Scholes model with time change by an independent
increasing stochastic process. Finally, we deal with a general situation in
which the dependence between the assets is described by a given copula
function. In this setting, we obtain a model-free tail-wing formula that links
the implied volatility to a special characteristic of the copula called the
weak lower tail dependence function
