The seasonal and interannual variability of total ozone as revealed by the BUV Nimbus-4 experiment
The BUV/Nimbus-4 total ozone data is analyzed with emphasis on the seasonal and interannual variability for the period April 1970 to April 1972. An objective analysis using a Fourier expansion shows the annual wave dominates at mid and high latitudes where the semiannual wave becomes significant in the tropics. A small interannual difference is detected and is most likely due to changes in the general circulation
Seasonal and interannual variations in total ozone revealed by the Nimbus-4 backscattered ultraviolet experiment
The first two years of Backscattered Ultraviolet (BUV) ozone data from the Nimbus-4 spacecraft were reprocessed. The seasonal variations of total ozone for the period April 1970 to April 1972 are described using daily zonal means to 10 deg latitude zones and a time-latitude cross section. In addition, the BUV data are compared with analyzed Dobson data and with IRIS data also obtained from the Nimbus-4 spacecraft. A harmonic analysis was performed on the daily zonal means. Amplitudes, days of peaks, and percentage of variance were computed for annual and semi-annual waves and for higher harmonics of an annual period for the two years. Asymmetries are found in the annual waves in the two hemispheres, with a subtle interannual difference which may be due to changes in the general circulation. A significant semi-annual component is detected in the tropics for the first year, which appears to result from influences of the annual waves in the two hemispheres
Kondo-Ising and Tight-Binding Models for TmB4
In , localized electrons with a large magnetic moment interact with
metallic electrons in boron-derived bands. We examine the nature of
using full-relativistic ab-initio density functional theory calculations,
approximate tight-binding Hamiltonian results, and the development of an
effective Kondo-Ising model for this system. Features of the Fermi surface
relating to the anisotropic conduction of charge are discussed. The observed
magnetic moment is argued to require a subtle crystal field
effect in metallic systems, involving a flipped sign of the effective charges
surrounding a Tm ion. The role of on-site quantum dynamics in the resulting
Kondo-Ising type "impurity" model are highlighted. From this model, elimination
of the conduction electrons will lead to spin-spin (RKKY-type) interaction of
Ising character required to understand the observed fractional magnetization
plateaus in
A status report on the analysis of the NOAA-9 SBUV/2 sweep mode solar irradiance data
Monitoring of the near ultraviolet (UV) solar irradiance is important because the solar UV radiation is the primary energy source in the upper atmosphere. The solar irradiance at wavelengths shortward of roughly 300 nm heats the stratosphere via photodissociation of ozone in the Hartley bands. Shortward of 242 nm the solar UV flux photodissociates O2, which is then available for ozone formation. Upper stratosphere ozone variations coincident with UV solar rotational modulation have been previously reported (Gille et al., 1984). Clearly, short and long term solar irradiance observations are necessary to separate solar-forced ozone variations from anthropogenic changes. The SBUV/2 instrument onboard the NOAA-9 spacecraft has made daily measurements of the solar spectral irradiance at approximately 0.15 nm intervals in the wavelength region 160-405 nm at 1 nm resolution since March 1985. These data are not needed to determine the terrestrial ozone overburden or altitude profile, and hence are not utilized in the NOAA Operational Ozone Product System (OOPS). Therefore, assisted by the ST System Corporation, NASA has developed a scientific software system to process the solar sweep mode data from the NOAA-9 instrument. This software will also be used to process the sweep mode solar irradiance data from the NOAA-11 and later SBUV/2 instruments. An overview of the software system and a brief discussion of analysis findings to date are provided. Several outstanding concerns/problems are also presented
Ten Years of Solar Change as Monitored by SBUV and SBUV/2
Observations of the Sun by the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) instrument aboard Nimbus 7 and the SBUV/2 instrument aboard NOAA-9 reveal variations in the solar irradiance from 1978, to 1988. The maximum to minimum solar change estimated from the Heath and Schlesinger Mg index and wavelength scaling factors is about 4 percent from 210 to 260 nm and 8 percent for 180 to 210 nm; direct measurements of the solar change give values of 1 to 3 percent and 5 to 7 percent, respectively, for the same wavelength range. Solar irradiances were high from the start of observations, late in 1978, until 1983, declined until early 1985, remained approximately constant until mid-1987, and then began to rise. Peak-to-peak 27-day rotational modulation amplitudes were as large as 6 percent at solar maximum and 1 to 2 percent at solar minimum. During occasional intervals of the 1979 to 1983 maximum and again during 1988, the dominant rotational modulation period was 13.5 days. Measurements near 200 to 205 nm show the same rotational modulation behavior but cannot be used to track long-term changes in the Sun because of uncertainties in the characterization of long-term instrument sensitivity changes
Substantiating a political public sphere in the Scottish press : a comparative analysis
This article uses content analysis to characterize the performance of the media in a national public sphere, by setting apart those qualities that typify internal press coverage of a political event. The article looks at the coverage of the 1999 devolved Scottish election from the day before the election until the day after. It uses a word count to measure the election material in Scottish newspapers the Herald, the Press and Journal and the Scotsman, and United Kingdom newspapers the Guardian, the Independent and The Times, and categorizes that material according to discourse type, day and page selection. The article finds a number of qualities that typify the Scottish sample in particular, and might be broadly indicative of a political public sphere in action. Firstly, and not unexpectedly, it finds that the Scottish newspapers carry significantly more election coverage. Just as tellingly, though, the article finds that the Scottish papers offer a greater proportion of advice and background information, in the form of opinion columns and feature articles. It also finds that the Scottish papers place a greater concentration of both informative and evaluative material in the period before the vote, consistent with their making a contribution to informed political action. Lastly, the article finds that the Scottish sample situates coverage nearer the front of the paper and places a greater proportion on recto pages. The article therefore argues that the Scottish papers display features that distinguish them from the UK papers, and are broadly consistent with their forming part of a deliberative public sphere, and suggests that these qualities might be explored as a means of judging future media performance
Non-Fermi liquid behavior of SrRuO_3 -- evidence from infrared conductivity
The reflectivity of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO_3 has been measured
between 50 and 25,000 cm-1 at temperatures ranging from 40 to 300 K, and used
to obtain conductivity, scattering rate, and effective mass as a function of
frequency and temperature. We find that at low temperatures the conductivity
falls unusually slowly as a function of frequency (proportional to
\omega^{-1/2}), and at high temperatures it even appears to increase as a
function of frequency in the far-infrared limit. The data suggest that the
charge dynamics of SrRuO_3 are substantially different from those of
Fermi-liquid metals.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figure
Non-Schlesinger Deformations of Ordinary Differential Equations with Rational Coefficients
We consider deformations of and matrix linear ODEs with
rational coefficients with respect to singular points of Fuchsian type which
don't satisfy the well-known system of Schlesinger equations (or its natural
generalization). Some general statements concerning reducibility of such
deformations for ODEs are proved. An explicit example of the general
non-Schlesinger deformation of -matrix ODE of the Fuchsian type with
4 singular points is constructed and application of such deformations to the
construction of special solutions of the corresponding Schlesinger systems is
discussed. Some examples of isomonodromy and non-isomonodromy deformations of
matrix ODEs are considered. The latter arise as the compatibility
