Efikasi Pemberian Ekstrak Temulawak (Curcuma Xanthorrhiza Roxb) Dan Multivitamin Mineral Terhadap Penurunan Kadar Asam Laktat Darah Atlet
Heavy exercise can increase free radicals. The imbalance of the body's natural antioxidant ability can cause oxidative stress and enhance blood lactic acid levels. The body requires exogenous antioxidants to meet antioxidant requirements against free radicals. Temulawak has antioxidant effects. This study examined the effect of temulawak extract and multivitamin-mineral supplements to decrease lactic acid levels in the blood plasma. This experimental design was a double-blind randomized controlled trial by recruited 35 football athletes of PPLP Salatiga, Central Java. We divided group treatment in to five, namely group I: placebo, group II : temulawak extract contains curcumin (TECC) 250 mg/day, group III: TECC 500 mg/day, group IV: TECC 750 mg/day, group V: multivitamin-mineral (MVM) capsules/day contained beta carotene (5000 IU); vitamin E (200 IU); vitamin C (500 mg); Zn (15 mg); and selenium (50 mcg). Capsules had been given for 17 days. The TECC 250 mg, placebo, and MVM groups increased its lactic acid level respectively were 0.24 ± 0.30 mmol/L, 0.30 ± 0.69 mmol /L, and 0.40 ± 1.34 mmol/L. The TECC 500 mg, MVM and TECC 750 mg groups declined its lactic acid level respectively were -0.04 ± 0.55 mmol/L, -0.40 ± 1.34 mmol/L and -0.80 ± 0.73 mmol/L. Ancova statistical test showed that decreased of lactic acid levels after intervention (adjusted) was influenced by levels of lactic acid and variations of treatment (p <0.05). Post-hoc test LSD, showed that decreased of lactic acid levels (adjusted) on TECC 750 mg group was lower than curcumin content of 250 mg, and 500 mg (p<0.05), while within MVM were not significantly different (p>0.05). The TECC 750 mg group was the best for decreasing lactic acid levels of athlete
Intravenous tPA therapy does not worsen acute intracerebral hemorrhage in mice
Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is the only FDA-approved treatment for reperfusing ischemic strokes. But widespread use of tPA is still limited by fears of inadvertently administering tPA in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Surprisingly, however, the assumption that tPA will worsen ICH has never been biologically tested. Here, we assessed the effects of tPA in two models of ICH. In a mouse model of collagenase-induced ICH, hemorrhage volumes and neurological deficits after 24 hrs were similar in saline controls and tPA-treated mice, whereas heparin-treated mice had 3-fold larger hematomas. In a model of laser-induced vessel rupture, tPA also did not worsen hemorrhage volumes, while heparin did. tPA is known to worsen neurovascular injury by amplifying matrix metalloproteinases during cerebral ischemia. In contrast, tPA did not upregulate matrix metalloproteinases in our mouse ICH models. In summary, our experimental data do not support the assumption that intravenous tPA has a deleterious effect in acute ICH. However, due to potential species differences and the inability of models to fully capture the dynamics of human ICH, caution is warranted when considering the implications of these findings for human therapy
Liquefaction and Surface Settlement in the Marina District
This paper evaluates the liquefaction potential of sands within the Marina District. Three types of underlying potentially liquefiable soil deposits are studied: (A) Hydraulic fill, (B) Artificial fill, and (C) Strawberry Island and other modern beach deposits. A liquefaction analysis for each of these deposits is conducted. It is suggested that a Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) of approximately 0.1g is needed in the Marina District to initiate liquefaction. Relations between PGA and thickness of liquefiable soil, as well as potential surface settlement are presented. These relationships are useful for the study of expected performance of the Marina District in future earthquakes. The results can also be used to evaluate possible ground modification methods, utility design, or structural retrofit designs
Cortical Microhemorrhages Cause Local Inflammation but Do Not Trigger Widespread Dendrite Degeneration
Microhemorrhages are common in the aging brain, and their incidence is correlated with increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. Past work has shown that occlusion of individual cortical microvessels as well as large-scale hemorrhages can lead to degeneration of neurons and increased inflammation. Using two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy in anesthetized mice, we characterized the acute and chronic dynamics of vessel bleeding, tissue compression, blood flow change, neural degeneration, and inflammation following a microhemorrhage caused by rupturing a single penetrating arteriole with tightly-focused femtosecond laser pulses. We quantified the extravasation of red blood cells (RBCs) and blood plasma into the brain and determined that the bleeding was limited by clotting. The vascular bleeding formed a RBC-filled core that compressed the surrounding parenchymal tissue, but this compression was not sufficient to crush nearby brain capillaries, although blood flow speeds in these vessels was reduced by 20%. Imaging of cortical dendrites revealed no degeneration of the large-scale structure of the dendritic arbor up to 14 days after the microhemorrhage. Dendrites close to the RBC core were displaced by extravasating RBCs but began to relax back one day after the lesion. Finally, we observed a rapid inflammatory response characterized by morphology changes in microglia/macrophages up to 200 µm from the microhemorrhage as well as extension of cellular processes into the RBC core. This inflammation persisted over seven days. Taken together, our data suggest that a cortical microhemorrhage does not directly cause significant neural pathology but does trigger a sustained, local inflammatory response

(Lipoxygenese in Soybean Products)
Lipoxygenase in an enzyme which limit the use of soybean as a protein source food. Research on this matter has been widely done. This paper discussed the property of lipoxygenase, off-flavor products resulted, its effect on soybean protein and its inactivation
Optimizing extraction of functional compounds from Indonesian black rice using response surface methodology
This study aimed to determine the optimum extraction condition of anthocyanin,
flavonoid, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of Jeliteng varieties black rice
using the heat-assisted maceration method. Variations in ethanol (50-60%), citric acid (3-
5%), and temperature (45-55°C) were studied using a Box–Behnken design. The
regression models were statistically significant (P < 0.001) with determination coefficients
at ≥0.900. Extraction with ethanol 56.11% and citric acid 4.42% at 49.29°C rendered an
extract with 109.64 mg/100 g of anthocyanins, 25.35 mg QE/100 g of flavonoids, 295.56
mg GAE/100 g total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity reached 61.69% of
inhibition. Predicted values at the optimized conditions can be confirmed with
experimental values.</jats:p
