Iodine monoxide in the Antarctic snowpack
Recent ground-based and space borne observations suggest the presence of significant amounts of iodine monoxide in the boundary layer of Antarctica, which are expected to have an impact on the ozone budget and might contribute to the formation of new airborne particles. So far, the source of these iodine radicals has been unknown. This paper presents long-term measurements of iodine monoxide at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer, which indicate that high IO concentrations in the order of 50 ppb are present in the snow interstitial air. The measurements have been performed using multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS). Using a coupled atmosphere snowpack radiative transfer model, the comparison of the signals observed from scattered skylight and from light reflected by the snowpack yields several ppb of iodine monoxide in the upper layers of the sunlit snowpack throughout the year. Snow pit samples from Neumayer Station contain up to 700 ng/l of total iodine, representing a sufficient reservoir for these extraordinarily high IO concentrations

Incompressible strips in dissipative Hall bars as origin of quantized Hall plateaus
We study the current and charge distribution in a two dimensional electron
system, under the conditions of the integer quantized Hall effect, on the basis
of a quasi-local transport model, that includes non-linear screening effects on
the conductivity via the self-consistently calculated density profile. The
existence of ``incompressible strips'' with integer Landau level filling factor
is investigated within a Hartree-type approximation, and non-local effects on
the conductivity along those strips are simulated by a suitable averaging
procedure. This allows us to calculate the Hall and the longitudinal resistance
as continuous functions of the magnetic field B, with plateaus of finite widths
and the well-known, exactly quantized values. We emphasize the close relation
between these plateaus and the existence of incompressible strips, and we show
that for B values within these plateaus the potential variation across the Hall
bar is very different from that for B values between adjacent plateaus, in
agreement with recent experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, All color onlin
Synoptic sections of the Denmark Strait Overflow
We report on a rapid high-resolution survey of the Denmark Strait overflow (DSO) as it crosses the sill, the first such program to incorporate full-water-column velocity profiles in addition to conventional hydrographic measurements. Seven transects with expendable profilers over the course of one week are used to estimate volume transport as a function of density. Our observations reveal the presence of a strongly barotropic flow associated with the nearly-vertical front dividing the Arctic and Atlantic waters. The seven-section mean transport of water denser than σθ=27.8 is 2.7±0.6Sv, while the mean transport of water colder than 2.0°C is 3.8±0.8 Sv. Although this is larger than the 2.9 Sv of θ < 2°C water measured by a 1973 current meter array, we find that a sampling of our sections equivalent to the extent of that array also measures 2.9Sv of cold water. Both the structure and magnitude of the measured flow are reproduced well by a high-resolution numerical model of buoyancy-driven exchange with realistic topography
