Decoherence and entropy of primordial fluctuations II. The entropy budget
We calculate the entropy of adiabatic perturbations associated with a
truncation of the hierarchy of Green functions at the first non trivial level,
i.e. in a self-consistent Gaussian approximation. We give the equation
governing the entropy growth and discuss its phenomenology. It is parameterized
by two model-dependent kernels. We then examine two particular inflationary
models, one with isocurvature perturbations, the other with corrections due to
loops of matter fields. In the first model the entropy grows rapidely, while in
the second the state remains pure (at one loop).Comment: 28 page

Experimental results are reported on an optical frequency synthesizer for use in dynamic dense wavelength-division-multiplexing networks, based on a tuneable laser in an optical injection phase-locked loop for rapid wavelength locking. The source combines high stability (50 dB), narrow linewidth (10 MHz), and fast wavelength switching (<10 ns)
EMBRACE@Nancay: An Ultra Wide Field of View Prototype for the SKA
A revolution in radio receiving technology is underway with the development
of densely packed phased arrays for radio astronomy. This technology can
provide an exceptionally large field of view, while at the same time sampling
the sky with high angular resolution. Such an instrument, with a field of view
of over 100 square degrees, is ideal for performing fast, all-sky, surveys,
such as the "intensity mapping" experiment to measure the signature of Baryonic
Acoustic Oscillations in the HI mass distribution at cosmological redshifts.
The SKA, built with this technology, will be able to do a billion galaxy
survey. I will present a very brief introduction to radio interferometry, as
well as an overview of the Square Kilometre Array project. This will be
followed by a description of the EMBRACE prototype and a discussion of results

Algon: a framework for supporting comparison of distributed algorithm performance
Programmers often need to use distributed algorithms to add non-functional behaviour such as mutual exclusion, deadlock detection and termination, to a distributed application. They find the selection and implementation of these algorithms daunting. Consequently, they have no idea which algorithm will be best for their particular application. To address this difficulty the Algon framework provides a set of pre-coded distributed algorithms for programmers to choose from, and provides a special performance display tool to support choice between algorithms. The performance tool is discussed. The developer of a distributed application will be able to observe the performance of each of the available algorithms according to a set of of widely accepted and easily-understandable performance metrics and compare and contrast the behaviour of the algorithms to support an informed choice. The strength of the Algon framework is that it does not require a working knowledge of algorithmic theory or functionality in order for the developer to use the algorithms
Characterization of a dense aperture array for radio astronomy
EMBRACE@Nancay is a prototype instrument consisting of an array of 4608
densely packed antenna elements creating a fully sampled, unblocked aperture.
This technology is proposed for the Square Kilometre Array and has the
potential of providing an extremely large field of view making it the ideal
survey instrument. We describe the system,calibration procedures, and results

Inflationary spectra and partially decohered distributions
It is generally expected that decoherence processes will erase the quantum
properties of the inflationary primordial spectra. However, given the weakness
of gravitational interactions, one might end up with a distribution which is
only partially decohered. Below a certain critical change, we show that the
inflationary distribution retains quantum properties. We identify four of
these: a squeezed spread in some direction of phase space, non-vanishing
off-diagonal matrix elements, and two properties used in quantum optics called
non--representability and non-separability. The last two are necessary
conditions to violate Bell's inequalities. The critical value above which all
these properties are lost is associated to the `grain' of coherent states. The
corresponding value of the entropy is equal to half the maximal (thermal)
value. Moreover it coincides with the entropy of the effective distribution
obtained by neglecting the decaying modes. By considering backreaction effects,
we also provide an upper bound for this entropy at the onset of the adiabatic

Biochemical and clinical response after umbilical cord blood transplant in a boy with early childhood-onset beta-mannosidosis.
BACKGROUND: Deficiency in the enzyme β-mannosidase was described over three decades ago. Although rare in occurrence, the presentation of childhood-onset β-mannosidase deficiency consists of hypotonia in the newborn period followed by global development delay, behavior problems, and intellectual disability. No effective pharmacologic treatments have been available.
METHODS: We report 2-year outcomes following the first umbilical cord blood transplant in a 4-year-old boy with early childhood-onset disease.
RESULTS: We show restoration of leukocyte β-mannosidase activity which remained normal at 2 years posttransplant, and a simultaneous increase in plasma β-mannosidase activity and dramatic decrease in urine-free oligosaccharides were also observed. MRI of the brain remained stable. Neurocognitive evaluation revealed test point gains, although the magnitude of improvement was less than expected for age, causing lower IQ scores that represent a wider developmental gap between the patient and unaffected peers.
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that hematopoietic cell transplant can correct the biochemical defect in β-mannosidosis, although preservation of the neurocognitive trajectory may be a challenge
