    A Monte Carlo packing algorithm for poly-ellipsoids and its comparison with packing generation using Discrete Element Model

    Granular material is showing very often in geotechnical engineering, petroleum engineering, material science and physics. The packings of the granular material play a very important role in their mechanical behaviors, such as stress-strain response, stability, permeability and so on. Although packing is such an important research topic that its generation has been attracted lots of attentions for a long time in theoretical, experimental, and numerical aspects, packing of granular material is still a difficult and active research topic, especially the generation of random packing of non-spherical particles. To this end, we will generate packings of same particles with same shapes, numbers, and same size distribution using geometry method and dynamic method, separately. Specifically, we will extend one of Monte Carlo models for spheres to ellipsoids and poly-ellipsoids

    Kondo Screening and Magnetic Ordering in Frustrated UNi4B

    UNi4B exhibits unusual properties and, in particular, a unique antiferromagnetic arrangement involving only 2/3 of the U sites. Based on the low temperature behavior of this compound, we propose that the remaining 1/3 U sites are nonmagnetic due to the Kondo effect. We derive a model in which the coexistence of magnetic and nonmagnetic U sites is the consequence of the competition between frustration of the crystallographic structure and instability of the 5f moments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Novel Phases of Planar Fermionic Systems

    We discuss a {\em family} of planar (two-dimensional) systems with the following phase strucure: a Fermi liquid, which goes by a second order transition (with non classical exponent even in mean-field) to an intermediate, inhomogeneous state (with nonstandard ordering momentum) , which in turn goes by a first order transition to a state with canonical order parameter. We analyze two examples: (i) a superconductor in a parallel magnetic field (which was discussed independently by Bulaevskii)for which the inhomogeneous state is obtained for 1.86Tc<B<1.862Tc1.86 T_c \stackrel{\sim}{<} B \stackrel{\sim}{<} 1.86 \sqrt{2} T_c where TcT_c is the critical temperature (in Kelvin) of the superconductor without a field and BB is measured in Tesla, and (ii) spinless (or, as is explained, spin polarized) fermions near half-filling where a similar, sizeable window (which grows in size with anisotropy) exists for the intermediate CDW phase at an ordering momentum different from (π,π)(\pi , \pi ).     Far-infrared vibrational properties of linear C60 polymers: A comparison between neutral and charged materials

    We report the far-infrared transmittance spectrum of a pure phase of the orthorhombic high-temperature and high-pressure C-60 polymer and compare the results with a previously published spectrum of the charged RbC60 orthorhombic polymer. Assignments for both spectra are made with the aid of first-principles quantum molecular dynamics simulations of the two materials. We find that the striking spectral differences between the neutral and charged linear fullerene polymers can be fully accounted for by charge effects on the C-60 ball

    Inter-laboratory comparison of methods to measure androstenone in pork fat

    Today, different analytical methods are used by different laboratories to quantify androstenone in fat tissue. This study shows the comparison of methods used routinely in different laboratories for androstenone quantification: Time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay in Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NSVS; Norway), gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry in Co-operative Central Laboratory (CCL; The Netherlands) and in Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA; Spain), and high-pressure liquid chromatography in Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux Research Station (ALP; Switzerland). In a first trial, a set of adipose tissue (AT) samples from 53 entire males was sent to CCL, IRTA and NSVS for determination of androstenone concentration. The average androstenone concentration (s.d.) was 2.47 (2.10) μg/g at NSVS, 1.31 (0.98) μg/g at CCL and 0.62 (0.52) μg/g at IRTA. Despite the large differences in absolute values, inter-laboratory correlations were high, ranging from 0.82 to 0.92. A closer look showed differences in the preparation step. Indeed, different matrices were used for the analysis: pure fat at NSVS, melted fat at CCL and AT at IRTA. A second trial was organised in order to circumvent the differences in sample preparation. Back fat samples from 10 entire males were lyophilised at the ALP labortary in Switzerland and were sent to the other laboratories for androstenone concentration measurement. The average concentration (s.d.) of androstenone in the freeze-dried AT samples was 0.87 (0.52), 1.03 (0.55), 0.84 (0.46) and 0.99 (0.67) μg/g at NSVS, CCL, IRTA and ALP, respectively, and the pairwise correlations between laboratories ranged from 0.92 to 0.97. Thus, this study shows the influence of the different sample preparation protocols, leading to major differences in the results, although still allowing high inter-laboratory correlations. The results further highlight the need for method standardisation and inter-laboratory ring tests for the determination of androstenone. This standardisation is especially relevant when deriving thresholds of consumer acceptance, whereas the ranking of animals for breeding purposes will be less affected due to the high correlations between method

    Interlayer Magnetic Frustration in Quasi-stoichiometric Li1-xNi1+xO2

    Susceptibility, high-field magnetization and submillimeter wave electron spin resonance measurements of layered quasi-stoichiometric Li1-xNi1+xO2 are reported and compared to isomorphic NaNiO2. A new mechanism of magnetic frustration induced by the excess Ni ions always present in the Li layers is proposed.
