G55.0+0.3: A Highly Evolved Supernova Remnant
Multi-frequency analysis has revealed the presence of a new supernova
remnant, G55.0+0.3, in the Galactic plane. A kinematic distance of 14 kpc has
been measured from HI spectral line data. The faint, clumpy half-shell is
non-thermal and has a physical radius of 70 pc. Using an evolutionary model,
the age of the remnant is estimated to be on the order of one million years,
which exceeds conventional limits by a factor of five. The remnant may be
associated with the nearby pulsar J1932+2020, which has a spin-down age of 1.1
million years. This work implies that the radiative lifetimes of remnants could

Radio polarimetric imaging of the interstellar medium: magnetic field and diffuse ionized gas structure near the W3/W4/W5/HB3 complex
We have used polarimetric imaging to study the magneto-ionic medium of the
Galaxy, obtaining 1420 MHz images with an angular resolution of 1' over more
than 40 square-degrees of sky around the W3/W4/W5/HB3 HII region/SNR complex in
the Perseus Arm. Features detected in polarization angle are imposed on the
linearly polarized Galactic synchrotron background emission by Faraday rotation
arising in foreground ionized gas having an emission measure as low as 1
cm^{-6} pc. Several new remarkable phenomena have been identified, including:
mottled polarization arising from random fluctuations in a magneto-ionic screen
that we identify with a medium in the Perseus Arm, probably in the vicinity of
the HII regions themselves; depolarization arising from very high rotation
measures (several times 10^3 rad m^{-2}) and rotation measure gradients due to
the dense, turbulent environs of the HII regions; highly ordered features
spanning up to several degrees; and an extended influence of the HII regions
beyond the boundaries defined by earlier observations. In particular, the
effects of an extended, low-density ionized halo around the HII region W4 are
evident, probably an example of the extended HII envelopes postulated as the
origin of weak recombination-line emission detected from the Galactic ridge.
Our polarization observations can be understood if the uniform magnetic field
component in this envelope scales with the square-root of electron density and
is 20 microG at the edge of the depolarized region around W4, although this is
probably an over-estimate since the random field component will have a

On the lease rate, convenience yield and speculative effects in the gold futures market
By examining data on the gold forward offered rate (GOFO) and lease rates over the period 1996- 2009, we conclude that the convenience yield of gold is better approximated by the lease rate than the interest-adjusted spread of Fama & French (1983). Using the latter quantity, we study the relationship between gold leasing and the level of COMEX discretionary inventory and exhibit that lease rates are negatively related to inventories. We also show that Futures prices have increasingly exceeded forward prices over the period, and this effect increases with the speculative pressure and the maturity of the contracts

Fate of conjugated natural and synthetic steroid estrogens in crude sewage and activated sludge batch studies

The fate of sulfate and glucuronide conjugated steroid estrogens was investigated in batch studies using activated sludge grown on synthetic sewage in a laboratory-scale Husmann simulation and crude sewage from the field. A clear distinction between the fate of sulfate and glucuronide conjugates was observed in both matrices, with sulfated conjugates proving more recalcitrant and glucuronide deconjugation preferential in crude sewage. For each conjugate, the free steroid was observed in the biotic samples. The degree of free steroid formation was dependent on the conjugate moiety, favoring the glucuronide. Subsequent degradation of the free steroid (and sorption to the activated sludge solid phase) was evaluated. Deconjugation followed the first order reaction rate with rate constants for 17α-ethinylestradiol 3-glucuronide, estriol 16α-glucuronide, and estrone 3-glucuronide determined as 0.32, 0.24, and 0.35 h respectively. The activated sludge solid retention time over the range of 3â9 days had 74 to 94% of sulfate conjugates remaining after 8 h. In contrast, a correlation between increasing temperature and decreasing 17α-ethinylestradiol 3-glucuronide concentrations in the activated sludge observed no conjugate present in the AS following 8 h at 22 °C Based on these batch studies and literature excretion profiles, a hypothesis is presented on which steroids and what form (glucuronide, sulfate, or free) will likely enter the sewage treatment plant.EPSR
SRAO CO Observation of 11 Supernova Remnants in l = 70 to 190 deg
We present the results of 12CO J = 1-0 line observations of eleven Galactic
supernova remnants (SNRs) obtained using the Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory
(SRAO) 6-m radio telescope. The observation was made as a part of the SRAO CO
survey of SNRs between l = 70 and 190 deg, which is intended to identify SNRs
interacting with molecular clouds. The mapping areas for the individual SNRs
are determined to cover their full extent in the radio continuum. We used
halfbeam grid spacing (60") for 9 SNRs and full-beam grid spacing (120") for
the rest. We detected CO emission towards most of the remnants. In six SNRs,
molecular clouds showed a good spatial relation with their radio morphology,
although no direct evidence for the interaction was detected. Two SNRs are
particularly interesting: G85.4+0.7, where there is a filamentary molecular
cloud along the radio shell, and 3C434.1, where a large molecular cloud appears
to block the western half of the remnant. We briefly summarize the results

Reported goal setting and benefits of person centred planning for people with intellectual disabilities
Recent research suggests that person centred planning (PCP) can have a positive impact on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. This article presents data from open-ended comments collected during research on the impact of PCP on the life experiences of 65 people with intellectual disabilities living in England. These comments addressed the goals set prior to and during PCP, and the main benefits of PCP for participants. The results suggest that PCP led to increased goal setting in a range of goal categories. This was reflected in the most common main benefit of PCP of `increased activities and opportunities\u27 reported for 57 percent of participants. For 48 percent of participants, a main benefit of PCP was that they felt better in themselves, in terms of happiness or self-esteem. This must surely be the ultimate aim of those seeking to improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities
Distance of three Supernova Remnants from HI line observations in a complex region: G114.3+0.3, G116.5+1.1, and CTB 1 (G116.9+0.2)
We present new radio continuum and HI images towards the supernova remnants
(SNRs) G114.3+0.3, G116.5+1.1, and G116.9+0.2 (CTB 1) taken from the Canadian
Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). We discuss the dynamics of their HI environment
and a possible relationship of these SNRs with each other. We discovered
patches of HI emission surrounding G114.3+0.3 indicating a location in the
Local arm at a distance of about 700 pc in contrast to previous publications
which proposed a Perseus arm location. The other two SNRs have radial
velocities of -17 km/s (G116.5+1.1) and -27 km/s (CTB 1) according to related
HI. However, the structure of the HI and its dynamics in velocity space suggest
a possible relation between them, placing both remnants at a distance of about
1.6 kpc. CTB 1 appears to be embedded in an HI feature which is moving as a
whole towards us with a velocity of about 10 km/s. Furthermore, the
off-centered location of CTB 1 in a large HI bubble indicates that the
so-called breakout region of the remnant is in fact due to its expansion
towards the low density interior of this bubble. We believe that the progenitor
star of CTB 1 was an early B or O-type star shaping its environment with a
strong stellar wind in which case it exploded in a Ib or Ic event.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical
