Tricritical Phenomena at the Cerium Transition
The isostructural transition in the
CeLaTh system is measured as a function of La alloying
using specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermal
expansivity/striction measurements. A line of discontinuous transitions, as
indicated by the change in volume, decreases exponentially from 118 K to close
to zero with increasing La doping and the transition changes from being
first-order to continuous at a critical concentration . At the tricritical point, the coefficient of the linear term in the
specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility start to increase
rapidly near = 0.14 and gradually approaches large values at =0.35
signifying that a heavy Fermi-liquid state evolves at large doping. Near ,
the Wilson ratio, , has a value of 3.0, signifying the presence of
magnetic fluctuations. Also, the low-temperature resistivity shows that the
character of the low-temperature Fermi-liquid is changing
Positive-Operator-Valued Time Observable in Quantum Mechanics
We examine the longstanding problem of introducing a time observable in
Quantum Mechanics; using the formalism of positive-operator-valued measures we
show how to define such an observable in a natural way and we discuss some

Cosmological perturbation spectra from SL(4,R)-invariant effective actions
We investigate four-dimensional cosmological vacuum solutions derived from an
effective action invariant under global SL(n,R) transformations. We find the
general solutions for linear axion field perturbations about homogeneous
dilaton-moduli-vacuum solutions for an SL(4,R)-invariant action and find the
spectrum of super-horizon perturbations resulting from vacuum fluctuations in a
pre big bang scenario. We show that for SL(n,R)-invariant actions with n>3
there exists a regime of parameter space of non-zero measure where all the
axion field spectra have positive spectral tilt, as required if light axion
fields are to provide a seed for anisotropies in the microwave background and

Perturbations on a moving D3-brane and mirage cosmology
We study the evolution of perturbations on a moving probe D3-brane coupled to
a 4-form field in an AdS-Schwarzschild bulk. The unperturbed dynamics are
parametrised by a conserved energy and lead to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker
`mirage' cosmology on the brane with scale factor . The fluctuations
about the unperturbed worldsheet are then described by a scalar field
. We derive an equation of motion for , and find that
in certain regimes of the effective mass squared is negative. On an
expanding BPS brane with E=0 superhorizon modes grow as whilst subhorizon
modes are stable. When the brane contracts, all modes grow. We also briefly
discuss the case when , BPS anti-branes as well as non-BPS branes.
Finally, the perturbed brane embedding gives rise to scalar perturbations in
the FRW universe. We show that is proportional to the gauge invariant

The crossover from propagating to strongly scattered acoustic modes of glasses observed in densified silica
Spectroscopic results on low frequency excitations of densified silica are
presented and related to characteristic thermal properties of glasses. The end
of the longitudinal acoustic branch is marked by a rapid increase of the
Brillouin linewidth with the scattering vector. This rapid growth saturates at
a crossover frequency Omega_co which nearly coincides with the center of the
boson peak. The latter is clearly due to additional optic-like excitations
related to nearly rigid SiO_4 librations as indicated by hyper-Raman
scattering. Whether the onset of strong scattering is best described by
hybridization of acoustic modes with these librations, by their elastic
scattering (Rayleigh scattering) on the local excitations, or by soft

On the psychometric study of human life history strategies: State of the science and evidence of two independent dimensions
This article attends to recent discussions of validity in psychometric research on human life history strategy (LHS), provides a constructive critique of the extant literature, and describes strategies for improving construct validity. To place the psychometric study of human LHS on more solid ground, our review indicates that researchers should (a) use approaches to psychometric modeling that are consistent with their philosophies of measurement, (b) confirm the dimensionality of life history indicators, and (c) establish measurement invariance for at least a subset of indicators. Because we see confirming the dimensionality of life history indicators as the next step toward placing the psychometrics of human LHS on more solid ground, we use nationally representative data and structural equation modeling to test the structure of middle adult life history indicators. We found statistically independent mating competition and Super-K dimensions and the effects of parental harshness and childhood unpredictability on Super-K were consistent with past research. However, childhood socioeconomic status had a moderate positive effect on mating competition and no effect on Super-K, while unpredictability did not predict mating competition. We conclude that human LHS is more complex than previously suggested—there does not seem to be a single dimension of human LHS among Western adults and the effects of environmental components seem to vary between mating competition and Super-K
Primordial fluctuations in bulk inflaton model
An inflationary brane model driven by a bulk inflaton with exponential
potential is proposed. We find a family of exact solutions that describe
power-law inflation on the brane. These solutions enable us to derive exact
solutions for metric perturbations analytically. By calculating scalar and
tensor perturbations, we obtain a spectrum of primordial fluctuations at the
end of the inflation. The amplitudes of scalar and tensor perturbations are
enhanced in the same way if the energy scale of the inflation is sufficiently
higher than the tension of the brane. Then the relative amplitude of scalar and
tensor perturbations is not suppressed even for high-energy inflation. This is
a distinguishable feature from the inflation model driven by inflaton on the
brane where tensor perturbations are suppressed for high-energy inflation. We
also point out that massive Kaluza-Klein modes are not negligible at
high-frequencies on 3-space of our brane.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, reference adde
Ellipsoidal universe in the brane world
We study a scenario of the ellipsoidal universe in the brane world cosmology
with a cosmological constant in the bulk . From the five-dimensional Einstein
equations we derive the evolution equations for the eccentricity and the scale
factor of the universe, which are coupled to each other. It is found that if
the anisotropy of our universe is originated from a uniform magnetic field
inside the brane, the eccentricity decays faster in the bulk in comparison with
a four-dimensional ellipsoidal universe. We also investigate the ellipsoidal
universe in the brane-induced gravity and find the evolution equation for the
eccentricity which has a contribution determined by the four- and
five-dimensional Newton's constants. The role of the eccentricity is discussed
