Low-lying states in even Gd isotopes studied with five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on covariant density functional theory
Five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density
functional theory has been applied to study the the low-lying states of
even-even Gd isotopes. The shape evolution from Gd to
Gd is presented. The experimental energy spectra and intraband
transition probabilities for the Gd isotopes are reproduced by the
present calculations. The relative ratios in present calculations are
also compared with the available interacting boson model results and
experimental data. It is found that the occupations of neutron
orbital result in the well-deformed prolate shape, and are essential for Gd

The role of components in the N(1440) resonance
The role of 5-quark components in the pion and electromagnetic decays and
transition form factors of the N(1440) is explored. The
components, where the 4-quark subsystem has the flavor-spin symmetries
and , which are expected to have
the lowest energy of all configurations, are considered in detail
with a nonrelativistic quark model. The matrix elements between the 5-quark
components of the N(1440) and the nucleon, , play a
minor role in these decays, while the transition matrix elements and that involve quark antiquark annihilation are very
significant. Both for the electromagnetic and strong decay the change from the
valence quark model value is dominated by the confinement triggered
annihilation transitions. In the case of pion decay the calculated decay width
is enhanced substantially both by the direct and also by the
confinement triggered transitions. Agreement with the
empirical value for the pion decay width may be reached with a 30%
component in the N(1440).Comment: 23 pages revte
Difficulties in probing density dependent symmetry potential with the HBT interferometry
Based on the updated UrQMD transport model, the effect of the symmetry
potential energy on the two-nucleon HBT correlation is investigated with the
help of the coalescence program for constructing clusters, and the CRAB
analyzing program of the two-particle HBT correlation. An obvious non-linear
dependence of the neutron-proton (or neutron-neutron) HBT correlation function
() at small relative momenta on the stiffness factor of the
symmetry potential energy is found: when , the
increases rapidly with increasing , while it starts to saturate if
. It is also found that both the symmetry potential energy
at low densities and the conditions of constructing clusters at the late stage
of the whole process influence the two-nucleon HBT correlation with the same

Computing as the 4th “R”: a general education approach to computing education
Computing and computation are increasingly pervading our lives, careers, and societies - a change driving interest in computing education at the secondary level. But what should define a "general education" computing course at this level? That is, what would you want every person to know, assuming they never take another computing course? We identify possible outcomes for such a course through the experience of designing and implementing a general education university course utilizing best-practice pedagogies. Though we nominally taught programming, the design of the course led students to report gaining core, transferable skills and the confidence to employ them in their future. We discuss how various aspects of the course likely contributed to these gains. Finally, we encourage the community to embrace the challenge of teaching general education computing in contrast to and in conjunction with existing curricula designed primarily to interest students in the field
On cost-effective communication network designing
How to efficiently design a communication network is a paramount task for
network designing and engineering. It is, however, not a single objective
optimization process as perceived by most previous researches, i.e., to
maximize its transmission capacity, but a multi-objective optimization process,
with lowering its cost to be another important objective. These two objectives
are often contradictive in that optimizing one objective may deteriorate the
other. After a deep investigation of the impact that network topology, node
capability scheme and routing algorithm as well as their interplays have on the
two objectives, this letter presents a systematic approach to achieve a
cost-effective design by carefully choosing the three designing aspects. Only
when routing algorithm and node capability scheme are elegantly chosen can
BA-like scale-free networks have the potential of achieving good tradeoff
between the two objectives. Random networks, on the other hand, have the
built-in character for a cost-effective design, especially when other aspects

Pion-photon and photon-pion transition form factors in light-cone formalism
We derive the minimal Fock-state expansions of the pion and the photon wave
functions in light-cone formalism, then we calculate the pion-photon and the
photon-pion transition form factors of and
processes by employing these
quark-antiquark wave functions of the pion and the photon. We find that our
calculation for the transition form factor
agrees with the experimental data at low and moderately high energy scale.
Moreover, the physical differences and inherent connections between the
transition form factors of and have been illustrated, which indicate that these
two physical processes are intrinsically related. In addition, we also discuss
