Pressure-Induced Effects on the Structure of the FeSe Superconductor
A polycrystalline sample of FeSe, which adopts the tetragonal PbO-type
structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature, has been prepared using solid state
reaction. We have investigated pressure-induced structural changes in
tetragonal FeSe at varying hydrostatic pressures up to 0.6 GPa in the
orthorhombic (T = 50 K) and tetragonal (T = 190 K) phases using high resolution
neutron powder diffraction. We report that the structure is quite compressible
with a Bulk modulus around 31 GPa to 33 GPa and that the pressure response is
anisotropic with a larger compressibility along the c-axis. Key bond angles of
the SeFe4 pyramids and FeSe4 tetrahedra are also determined as a function of
pressure
Mutations in shaking-B prevent electrical synapse formation in the Drosophila giant fiber system
The giant fiber system (GFS) is a simple network of neurons that mediates visually elicited escape behavior in Drosophila. The giant fiber (GF), the major component of the system, is a large, descending interneuron that relays visual stimuli to the motoneurons that innervate the tergotrochanteral jump muscle (TTM) and dorsal longitudinal flight muscles (DLMs). Mutations in the neural transcript from the shaking-B locus abolish the behavioral response by disrupting transmission at some electrical synapses in the GFS. This study focuses on the role of the gene in the development of the synaptic connections. Using an enhancer-trap line that expresses lacZ in the GFs, we show that the neurons develop during the first 30 hr of metamorphosis. Within the next 15 hr, they begin to form electrical synapses, as indicated by the transfer of intracellularly injected Lucifer yellow. The GFs dye-couple to the TTM motoneuron between 30 and 45 hr of metamorphosis, to the peripherally synapsing interneuron that drives the DLM motoneurons at approximately 48 hr, and to giant commissural interneurons in the brain at approximately 55 hr. Immunocytochemistry with shaking-B peptide antisera demonstrates that the expression of shaking-B protein in the region of GFS synapses coincides temporally with the onset of synaptogenesis; expression persists thereafter. The mutation shak-B2, which eliminates protein expression, prevents the establishment of dye coupling shaking-B, therefore, is essential for the assembly and/or maintenance of functional gap junctions at electrical synapses in the GFS
P6_5 The Flash and Quantum Tunneling
The Flash, a popular DC Comics superhero, is regarded as the fastest human alive. He has the power to run faster than light and phase through solid objects while doing so. Since his power to run faster than light is disputed by Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, for this article we will assume that he is able to achieve a maximum velocity of 0:99 c . Given the high kinetic energy, in this paper we look at the possibility of him quantum tunneling through a solid object such as a wall

Modelling lubricated revolute joints in multibody mechanical systems
This work deals with the modelling of lubricated revolute joints in multibody mechanical systems. In most machines and mechanisms, the joints are designed to operate with some lubricant fluid. The high pressures generated in the lubricant fluid act to keep the journal and the bearing apart. Moreover, the thin film formed by lubricant reduces friction and wear, provides load capacity and adds damping to dissipate undesirable mechanical vibrations. In the dynamic analysis of journal–bearings, the hydrodynamic forces, which include both squeeze and wedge effects, produced by the lubricant fluid oppose the journal motion. These forces are obtained by integrating the pressure distribution evaluated with the aid of Reynolds’ equation written for the dynamic regime. The hydrodynamic forces are nonlinear functions of journal centre position and velocity relative to the bearing centre. In a simple way, the hydrodynamic forces built up by the lubricant fluid are evaluated from the state of variable of the system and included into the equations of motion of the mechanical system. Results for an elementary slider–crank mechanism, in which a lubricated revolute joint connects the connecting rod and slider, are used to discuss the assumptions and procedures adopted.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Impact of Analog and Digital Pre-emphasis on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio of Bandwidth-limited Optical Transceivers
The ever-growing machine-to-machine traffic in data centers has stimulated the increase of transceiver data rate from 25Gb/s/λ to 100Gb/s/λ and beyond. It is believed that advanced modulation formats and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) will be employed in next generation short-reach transceivers. Digital pre-emphasis techniques are widely employed in DAC-based transceivers to compensate for the high frequency roll-off due to the RF and optoelectronics components in optical transceivers. However, digital pre-emphasis essentially reduces the magnitude of the signal low frequency components for a flat frequency response, which unavoidably increases quantization error, reducing the overall signal-to-noise ratio. This trade-off between SNR and bandwidth conflicts with the high SNR requirement of advanced modulation formats such as the Nyquist-shaped pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). To mitigate the quantization error induced SNR degradation, we show that analog pre-emphasis filters can be used in conjunction with digital pre-emphasis for improved system performance. To understand the impact of the analog pre-emphasis filter on system performance, we analyze the relationship between the flatness of the system frequency response and the SNR degradation due to digital pre-emphasis, and demonstrate 1.1-dB increase of receiver sensitivities, for both 64-Gb/s and 128-Gb/s intensity-modulation direct detection (IM-DD) 20 PAM4 signals, respectively employing a directly modulated laser (DML) and an electroabsorption modulator (EAM)
