Searching edges in the overlap of two plane graphs
Consider a pair of plane straight-line graphs, whose edges are colored red
and blue, respectively, and let n be the total complexity of both graphs. We
present a O(n log n)-time O(n)-space technique to preprocess such pair of
graphs, that enables efficient searches among the red-blue intersections along
edges of one of the graphs. Our technique has a number of applications to
geometric problems. This includes: (1) a solution to the batched red-blue
search problem [Dehne et al. 2006] in O(n log n) queries to the oracle; (2) an
algorithm to compute the maximum vertical distance between a pair of 3D
polyhedral terrains one of which is convex in O(n log n) time, where n is the
total complexity of both terrains; (3) an algorithm to construct the Hausdorff
Voronoi diagram of a family of point clusters in the plane in O((n+m) log^3 n)
time and O(n+m) space, where n is the total number of points in all clusters
and m is the number of crossings between all clusters; (4) an algorithm to
construct the farthest-color Voronoi diagram of the corners of n axis-aligned
rectangles in O(n log^2 n) time; (5) an algorithm to solve the stabbing circle
problem for n parallel line segments in the plane in optimal O(n log n) time.
All these results are new or improve on the best known algorithms.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Negative Giant Longitudinal Magnetoresistance in NiMnSb/InSb: An interface effect
We report on the electrical and magneto-transport properties of the contact
formed between polycrystalline NiMnSb thin films grown using pulsed laser
deposition (PLD) and n-type degenerate InSb (100) substrates. A negative giant
magnetoresistance (GMR) effect is observed when the external magnetic field is
parallel to the surface of the film and to the current direction. We attribute
the observed phenomenon to magnetic precipitates formed during the magnetic
film deposition and confined to a narrow layer at the interface. The effect of
these precipitates on the magnetoresistance depends on the thermal processing

Superconductivity and spin-glass like behavior in system with Pd sheet sandwiched between graphene sheets
Pd-metal graphite (Pd-MG) has a layered structure, where each Pd sheet is
sandwiched between adjacent graphene sheets. DC magnetization and AC magnetic
susceptibility of Pd-MG have been measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Pd-MG
undergoes a superconducting transition at ( K). The
superconductivity occurs in Pd sheets. The relaxation of (aging),
which is common to spin glass systems, is also observed below . The
relaxation rate shows a peak at a characteristic time , which is
longer than a wait time . The irreversibility between and
occurs well above . The susceptibility obeys a
Curie-Weiss behavior with a negative Curie-Weiss temperature ( K). The growth of antiferromagnetic order is limited by the
disordered nature of nanographites, forming spin glass-like behavior at low

Strong rejuvenation in a chiral-glass superconductor
The glassy paramagnetic Meissner phase of a BiSrCaCuO
superconductor ( = 8.18) is investigated by squid magnetometry, using
``dc-memory'' experiments employed earlier to study spin glasses. The
temperature dependence of the zero-field-cooled and thermo-remanent
magnetization is recorded on re-heating after specific cooling protocols, in
which single or multiple halts are performed at constant temperatures. The
'spin' states equilibrated during the halts are retrieved on re-heating. The
observed memory and rejuvenation effects are similar to those observed in
Heisenberg-like spin glasses.Comment: REVTeX 4 style; 5 pages, 5 figure
Adsorption in non interconnected pores open at one or at both ends: A reconsideration of the origin of the hysteresis phenomenon
We report on an experimental study of adsorption isotherme of nitrogen onto
porous silicon with non interconnected pores open at one or at both ends in
order to check for the first time the old (1938) but always current idea based
on Cohan's description which suggests that the adsorption of gaz should occur
reversibly in the first case and irreversibly in the second one. Hysteresis
loops, the shape of which is usually associated to interconnections in porous
media, are observed whether the pores are open at one or at both ends in
contradiction with Cohan's model.Comment: 5 pages, 4 EPS figure
Novel 3-nitrotriazole-based amides and carbinols as bifunctional anti-Chagasic agents.
3-Nitro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-based amides with a linear, rigid core and 3-nitrotriazole-based fluconazole analogs were synthesized as dual functioning antitrypanosomal agents. Such compounds are excellent substrates for type I nitroreductase (NTR) located in the mitochondrion of trypanosomatids and, at the same time, act as inhibitors of the sterol 14α-demethylase (T. cruzi CYP51) enzyme. Because combination treatments against parasites are often superior to monotherapy, we believe that this emerging class of bifunctional compounds may introduce a new generation of antitrypanosomal drugs. In the present work, the synthesis and in vitro and in vivo evaluation of such compounds is discussed.This work was supported in part by internal funds of the Radiation Medicine Department at NorthShore University HealthSystem.
