    Geochemistry of some ferruginous soils of Kerala, India

    The four representative ferruginous soils on lateritic cover developed over Precambrian rocks in parts of Kottayam of Kerala were studied to understand the weathering pattern and genesis through geochemistry. These soils are strongly to moderately acidic, reddish brown with low Cation exchange capacity CEC and base saturation having SiO2 - 33 to 57%, Al2O3 - 16-31%, Fe2O3 - 8 to 15% and TiO2 -0.7 to 1.4%. Kanjirapalli (P3) and Athirampuzha (P4) soil series were more intensely weathered as compared to the Kinalur (P1) and Chingavanam series (P2) with silica to alumina -iron ratio less than 2 and had a significant negative relationship with Chemical index of alteration CIA ( -0.75**), Harnois index ( -0.678**), Richie index (-0.953**) and Plagioclase Index of Weathering (-0.705**). The trace elemental concentration ranges were above the values of world soils having an enrichment index more than 1 in Kanjirapalli series (P3) and Ni contamination in genetic horizons (Ni > 200µgg-1 ). The cluster analysis showed similar major oxide concentration pattern in Group -1 and Group - 2 but varied in trace elemental pattern with Cr > Ba > Cu in Group - 1 and Cu > Cr > Ba in Group- 2 soils whereas Zr > Ni > Mn in Group - 3 to Ni > Mn > Zr in Group - 4 soils. The study further showed that differential rate of weathering in soils under tropical climate was further accelerated due to anthropogenic activities such as improper land use practices and deforestation on sleep slopes

    Multi-input Fuzzy Logic Controller for Brushless dc Motor Drives

    The brushless dc motors are used in various applications such as defence, industries,robotics, etc. In these applications, the motor should be precisely controlled to give the desiredperformance. The proposed controller systems consist of multi-input fuzzy (two-and three-input)logic controller (FLC) and multi-input integrated fuzzy logic controller (IFLC) for the speed controlof brushless dc servomotor drive. The input for the controllers are error e(k), change in error[first derivative of error ce(k)] and change of change in error [second derivative of error cce(k)]with a single-output. The error cce(k) is substantial at the overshoots/undershoots and is thereforeessential for accurate speed control of brushless dc motor. The error cce(k) has been introducedfor the first time in the literature as one of the input in the FLC and IFLC design. The IFLC isdesigned using FLC and proportional derivation integral (PID) controllers. The controller systemshave been studied systematically for the transient and steady-state conditions. The three-inputIFLC is found to be superior, more robust, faster, flexible, and is insensitive to the parametervariations as compared with the FLC (with two-and three-input) and conventional two-inputIFL

    Lepton Flavor Violation at the Large Hadron Collider

    We investigate a potential of discovering lepton flavor violation (LFV) at the Large Hadron Collider. A sizeable LFV in low energy supersymmetry can be induced by massive right-handed neutrinos, which can explain neutrino oscillations via the seesaw mechanism. We investigate a scenario where the distribution of an invariant mass of two hadronically decaying taus (\tauh\tauh) from \schizero{2} decays is the same in events with or without LFV. We first develop a transfer function using this ditau mass distribution to model the shape of the non-LFV \tauh\mu invariant mass. We then show the feasibility of extracting the LFV \tauh\mu signal.     Evaluation of agricultural land resources for irrigation in the cotton growing Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, India

    The main objective of this study is to evaluate suitability of shrink-swell soils for surface irrigation system based upon a parametric evaluation system in low irrigation potential (7%) of cotton growing Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, India. The thirty three shrink-swell soil series on basaltic landforms were identified from reconnaissance soil survey on 1:50,000 scale and evaluated for surface irrigation methods using Geographic Information System (GIS). The standard weekwise rainfall data showed that the rainfall is less than 20% of total precipitation during September and December, the top A horizon reaches to wilting point and needs supplementary protective irrigation to cotton based cropping systems . It was estimated that ten soil mapping units (1.8 Mha and 13.89%) of shrink-swell soils on moderate slopes (5 to 8%) were evaluated as suitable for surface methods and calculated the irrigation intervals that vary from 8.61±1.35 days for cotton to 8.9±1.4 days for wheat and 10±1.64 days for sugar cane. The study emphasized the utility of soil resource maps helps to delineate the soils with large PAWC(>200mm) with slight yield advantage and will serve as benchmark sites to monitor the interrelationships of soil water dynamics with respect to climate and cotton yields

    Rapidly rotating strange stars for a new equation of state of strange quark matter

    For a new equation of state of strange quark matter, we construct equilibrium sequences of rapidly rotating strange stars in general relativity. The sequences are the normal and supramassive evolutionary sequences of constant rest mass. We also calculate equilibrium sequences for a constant value of Ω\Omega corresponding to the most rapidly rotating pulsar PSR 1937 + 21. In addition to this, we calculate the radius of the marginally stable orbit and its dependence on Ω\Omega, relevant for modeling of kilo-Hertz quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray binaries.Comment: Two figures, uses psbox.tex and emulateapj5.st

    Pilot scale studics on the beneficiation of low-grade fluorspar and copper-lead-zinc ore were investigated using flotation columns. Acidspar concentrates suitable for HF production can be produced by adopting two-stage column cleaning in place of multi-stage cleaning by conventional flotation cells. A three-column canfiguration in the place of four-stage cleaning in acidspar circuit and four in metspar circuit was suggested. Similarly, it was demonstrated that a single stage cleaning by flotation column was found to be sufficient in the plnce of two-stage cleaning by conventional flotation cells to obtain bulk concentrates of Cu-Pb-Zn

    Prediction of Cardiovascular Diseases by Integrating Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Phonocardiogram (PCG) Multi-Modal Features using Hidden Semi Morkov Model

    Because the health care field generates a large amount of data, we must employ modern ways to handle this data in order to give effective outcomes and make successful decisions based on data. Heart diseases are the major cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for 1/3th of all fatalities. Cardiovascular disease detection can be accomplished by the detection of disturbance in cardiac signals, one of which is known as phonocardiography. The aim of this project is for using machine learning to categorize cardiac illness based on electrocardiogram (ECG) and phonocardiogram (PCG) readings. The investigation began with signal preprocessing, which included cutting and normalizing the signal, and was accompanied by a continuous wavelet transformation utilizing a mother wavelet analytic morlet. The results of the decomposition are shown using a scalogram, and the outcomes are predicted using the Hidden semi morkov model (HSMM). In the first phase, we submit the dataset file and choose an algorithm to run on the chosen dataset. The accuracy of each selected method is then predicted, along with a graph, and a modal is built for the one with the max frequency by training the dataset to it. In the following step, input for each cardiac parameter is provided, and the sick stage of the heart is predicted based on the modal created. We then take measures based on the patient's condition. When compared to current approaches, the suggested HSMM has 0.952 sensitivity, 0.92 specificity, 0.94 F-score, 0.91 ACC, and 0.96 AUC

    Various control measures by themselves are not free from one or the other limitations to provide safe, economically viable and efficient in pest population suppression. The economics is much more relevant when we talk of low value commodity like forage crops. Viewing this multifaceted problem and inherent limitations of each control method the ultimate solution lies in integrated pest control expedient. The connotation of the approach is to utilize all the possible methods of control including maximum exploitation of naturally existing populations and regulating factors in as compatible manner as possible to keep the pest population levels below economic threshold.     Land resource assessment for agricultural development in Seoni district (Madhya Pradesh), India

    The objective of land resource assessment for rainfed agridevelopment in tribal dominated Seoni ditrict, Madhya Pradesh was to assess the suitability of thrity soil mapping units for sorghum-cotton based systems in relation to fertility constraints and for enhancing crop productivity. The arability and suitability analysis showed that fifty six per cent of arable land is suitable for eleven land use systems. The twenty two per cent of arable basaltic lands in northen plateaus were evaluated as suitable for for citrus, sorghum and soybean cropping systems with limitations of low available nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc whereas in southern precipitous zone , fifteen per cent of granitic lands were evaluated as suitable for sorghum and cotton with limitations of stoniness, low water holding capacity, low status of available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and zinc and eighteen per cent of area in sagar and hirvi river valleys for rice, citrus, maize, sunflower and vegetables. Out of 44.6 per cent of nonarable land, thirty seven per cent of land was evaluated as suitable for forestry / grazing and 6.8 per cent for wild life.The study advocates agroecological zonation for maximum utilization of land resources for potential cropping systems in improving produvtivity and fertility management

    Performance Evaluation of Water-Injection Cyclone Treating a Synthetic Mixture

    The effect of change in operating variables i.e., vortex finder diameter,spigot diameter nd water injection rate on different performance numbers is studied in water-injection cyclone treating a synthetic mixture of atomized Ferro-silicon and ground silica sand. Suitable empirical models relating the operating variables and fines (below 25 microns) recovery, ferro-silicon and silica recoveries in the overflow productand the separation efficiency at 25 microns size are developed. At comparable levels of ope-rating throughput, the performance numbers obtained in a 100mm water-injection cyclone and a 100mm normal hydro- cyclone are discussed. An overall fines recovery of 85.6% was obtained in the overflow product of water-injection cyclone whereas in a normal hydrocyclone the combined fines recovery in the overflow product was 46.2%. Similarly the ferro-silicon recovery at fines below 25 microns in the overflow product from water-injection cyclone was 55.5% while that of hydro-cyclone was only 9.8%. Also, silica recovery at fines below 25 microns in the overflow product of a water-injection cyclone was 98.6% in comparison to 82.1% in a normal hydrocyclone. Separation efficiency values obtained between coarse and fine products at 25 microns in the overflow product of water-injection cyclone and hydro-cyclone were 83.5% and 45.8% respectively which indicates sharper classification in water-injection cyclone
