Christian inspiration and the identity of the university as an institution

In this presentation, I argue that the history of universities is entirely germane to assessing what their role should be at the outset of the twenty-first century. Challenged as we are on all sides by cataclysmic changes in technology and economic demands that increasingly pressure us to become institutions aimed solely at variable utilitarian ends, we need to remember the ‘philosophical’ aspect of a university, as opposed to a technical education, and emphasize the importance of education in perfecting human intellects in our deliberations about the future of universities

In 2009, a questionnaire was circulated to 19 national haemophilia patient organizations in Europe affiliated to the European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC) and the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) to seek information about the organization of haemophilia care and treatment available at a national level. The responses received highlighted differences in the level of care despite the recent promulgation of consensus guidelines designed to standardize the care of haemophilia throughout the continent of Europe. There was a wide range in factor VIII consumption with usage ranging from 0.38 IU per capita in Romania to 8.7 IU per capita in Sweden (median: 3.6 IU per capita). Despite the specific inclusion of coagulation factor concentrate in the WHO list of essential medications, cryoprecipitate is still used in some eastern European countrie

Juan Iribarne e Uraburu on the voluntary, will, and nature

In this paper, the author examines the theory of will outlined in the Tractatus de actibus humanis of Juan Iribarne Uraburu. Juan’s discussion of will is situated in relation to various Thomistic thinkers of seventeenth-century Iberia and is shown both to be continuous with and innovative within the Scotistic tradition. The conclusion reached is that Juan’s theory highlights fundamental disagreements that distinguish Scotistic theories of the will from those of other Scholastic theories, whether Thomistic or Suarezian, and thus is extremely instructive for current philosophical reflection.
