    Effects of Magnesium Deficiency on Discriminative Avoidance Behavior of Rats

    The purpose of this thesis is to determine what effects a dietary magnesium deficiency has on the discriminative avoidance behavior of rats. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment I compared two groups to determine the effects of magnesium deficiency on bar-press discriminative avoidance behavior. The results of Experiment l clearly illustrated that rats fed n diet deficient in magnesium began to lose their discriminative avoidance behavior after approximately five days with a steady decrease in performance over the remaining five days. Experiment II used a single subject design in an attempt to replicate Experiment I and to determine whether or not the magnesium deficiency effect could be reversed. Blood samples of serum magnesium for each rat were taken daily. The results confirmed Experiment I. A magnesium deficiency did cause a decrease in the performance of discriminative bar-press avoidance. Two of the four rats responded to the rehabilitation treatment with a corresponding increase in avoidance behavior with an increase in serum magnesium levels. The other two rats did not recover avoidance performance with rehabilitation, but did improve with regard to other behavioral measurements. Experiment III again employed two groups of rats in an attempt to determine the effects of a magnesium deficiency upon acquisition of a discriminative shuttle box avoidance performance. A pilot study to Experiment III showed a clear effect with normal controls displaying statistically more avoidance responses than the experimentals who received subnormal levels of magnesium. The results from Experiment III however showed no statistically significant difference between the controls and experimentals even though there was a statistical difference in serum magnesium concentration

    Top Quark Spin Polarization in ep Collision

    We discuss the degree of spin polarization of single top quarks produced via WgWg fusion process in epep collision at TESLA+HERAp and CLIC+LHC energies s=1.6\sqrt{s}=1.6 and 5.3 TeV. For ebtνˉeb \to t \bar{\nu} subprocess we show that the top quark spin is completely polarized when the spin basis is chosen in the direction of the incoming positron beam in the rest frame of top quark. A description on how to combine the cross sections of e+btνˉe^{+}b\to t\bar{\nu} and e+gtbˉνˉe^{+}g\to t\bar{b}\bar{\nu} processes is given. e+e^{+}-beam direction is taken to be the favorite top quark spin decomposition axis in its rest frame and it is found to be comparable with the ones in pppp collision.     Using Spin Correlations to Distinguish Zh from ZA at the International Linear Collider

    We investigate how to exploit the spin information imparted to the Z boson in associated Higgs production at a future linear collider as an aid in distinguishing between CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons. We apply a generalized spin-basis analysis which allowsus to study the possibilities offered by non-traditional choices of spin projection axis. In particular, we find that the Z bosons produced in association with a CP-even Higgs via polarized collisions are in a single transverse spin-state (>90% purity) when we use the Zh-transverse basis, provided that the Z~bosons are not ultra-relativistic (speed <0.9c). This same basis applied to the associated production of a CP-odd Higgs yields Z's that are an approximately equal mixture of longitudinal and transverse polarizations. We present a decay angular distribution which could be used to distinguish between the CP-even and CP-odd cases. Finally, we make a few brief remarks about how this distribution would be affected if the Higgs boson turns out to not be a CP-eigenstate.Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures, revtex

    Reducing combinatorial uncertainties: A new technique based on MT2 variables

    We propose a new method to resolve combinatorial ambiguities in hadron collider events involving two invisible particles in the final state. This method is based on the kinematic variable MT2 and on the MT2-assisted-on-shell reconstruction of invisible momenta, that are reformulated as `test' variables Ti of the correct combination against the incorrect ones. We show how the efficiency of the single Ti in providing the correct answer can be systematically improved by combining the different Ti and/or by introducing cuts on suitable, combination-insensitive kinematic variables. We illustrate our whole approach in the specific example of top anti-top production, followed by a leptonic decay of the W on both sides. However, by construction, our method is also directly applicable to many topologies of interest for new physics, in particular events producing a pair of undetected particles, that are potential dark-matter candidates. We finally emphasize that our method is apt to several generalizations, that we outline in the last sections of the paper.Comment: 1+23 pages, 8 figures.     Deconstructing Angular Correlations in ZH, ZZ, and WW Production at LEP2

    We apply a generalized spin-basis analysis to associated Higgs production and gauge boson pair production at LEP. This framework allows us to identify a choice of spin axes for the processes e+ e- --> ZH,ZZ which leads to strikingly different correlations among the decay products, even well above threshold. This spin basis optimizes the difference in the angular correlations for these two processes. In contrast, the same distributions display little contrast when the helicity basis is used.     Top-quark spin correlation at Linear Colliders with anomalous couplings

    We investigate the feasibility of probing anomalous top-quark couplings of WtbWtb, ZttˉZ t \bar{t}, and γttˉ\gamma t \bar{t} in terms of an effective Lagrangian with dimension-six operators at future e+ee^+e^- linear colliders with a c. m. energy s500800\sqrt s \sim 500-800 GeV. We first examine the constraints on these anomalous couplings from the ZbbˉZ\to b \bar{b} data at LEP I and from unitarity considerations. We then consider in detail the effects of anomalous couplings on ttˉt \bar{t} spin correlations in the top-pair production and decay with three spin bases: the helicity, beamline and off-diagonal bases. Our results show that the polarized beams are more suitable for exploring the effects of different new operators.     On measurement of top polarization as a probe of ttˉt \bar t production mechanisms at the LHC

    In this note we demonstrate the use of top polarization in the study of ttˉt \bar t resonances at the LHC, in the possible case where the dynamics implies a non-zero top polarization. As a probe of top polarization we construct an asymmetry in the decay-lepton azimuthal angle distribution (corresponding to the sign of cosϕ\cos\phi_\ell) in the laboratory. The asymmetry is non-vanishing even for a symmetric collider like the LHC, where a positive zz axis is not uniquely defined. The angular distribution of the leptons has the advantage of being a faithful top-spin analyzer, unaffected by possible anomalous tbWtbW couplings, to linear order. We study, for purposes of demonstration, the case of a ZZ' as might exist in the little Higgs models. We identify kinematic cuts which ensure that our asymmetry reflects the polarization in sign and magnitude. We investigate possibilities at the LHC with two energy options: s=14\sqrt{s} = 14 TeV and s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, as well as at the Tevatron. At the LHC the model predicts net top quark polarization of the order of a few per cent for MZ1200M_{Z'} \simeq 1200 GeV, being as high as 1010 % for a smaller mass of the ZZ' of 700700 GeV and for the largest allowed coupling in the model, the values being higher for the 77 TeV option. These polarizations translate to a deviation from the standard-model value of azimuthal asymmetry of up to about 44% (77%) for 1414 (77) TeV LHC, whereas for the Tevatron, values as high as 1212% are attained. For the 1414 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 10 fb1^{-1}, these numbers translate into a 3σ3 \sigma sensitivity over a large part of the range 500MZ1500500 \lesssim M_{Z'} \lesssim 1500 GeV.Comment: 28 page, LaTeX, requires JHEP style file, 12 figures.
