    Electric field and strain induced Rashba effect in hybrid halide perovskites

    Using first principles density functional theory calculations, we show how Rashba-type energy band splitting in the hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites APbX3_3 (A=CH3_3NH3+_3^+, CH(NH2_2)2+_2^+, Cs+^+ and X=I, Br) can be tuned and enhanced with electric fields and anisotropic strain. In particular, we demonstrate that the magnitude of the Rashba splitting of tetragonal (CH3_3NH3_3)PbI3_3 grows with increasing macroscopic alignment of the organic cations and electric polarization, indicating appreciable tunability with experimentally-feasible applied fields, even at room temperature. Further, we quantify the degree to which this effect can be tuned via chemical substitution at the A and X sites, which alters amplitudes of different polar distortion patterns of the inorganic PbX3_3 cage that directly impact Rashba splitting. In addition, we predict that polar phases of CsPbI3_3 and (CH3_3NH3_3)PbI3_3 with R3cR3c symmetry possessing considerable Rashba splitting might be accessible at room temperature via anisotropic strain induced by epitaxy, even in the absence of electric fields

    A Comparison of Bond Strength Between Direct- and Indirect-bonding Methods

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength and the sites of bond failure for brackets bonded to teeth, using two indirect-bonding material protocols and a direct-bonding technique. Sixty extracted human premolars were collected and randomly divided into three groups. The direct-bonded group (group 1) used a light-cured adhesive and primer (Transbond XT). One indirect-bonded group (group 2) consisted of a chemical-cured primer (Sondhi Rapid Set) and light-cured adhesive (Transbond XT), whereas the other group (group 3) used a light-cured primer (Orthosolo) and adhesive (Enlight LV). Forty hours after bonding, the samples were debonded. Mean shear bond strengths were 16.27, 13.83, and 14.76 MPa for groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. A one-way analysis of variance showed no significant difference in mean bond strength between groups (P = .21). Furthermore, a Weibull analysis showed all three groups tested provided over a 90% survival rate at normal masticatory and orthodontic force levels. For each tooth, an Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) score was determined. Group 2 was found to have a significantly lower ARI score (P \u3c .05) compared with groups 1 and 3. In addition, Pearson correlation coefficients indicated no strong correlation between bond strength and ARI score within or across all groups

    Personality, preferred leadership style and principal preparation

    This study identifies the preferred leadership styles of students enrolled in principal preparation programs and compares the styles identified by traditional public school teachers and charter school teachers who seek principal certification. Participative leadership and Goal Oriented leadership were identified as the predominant styles. Seventy-five per cent of teachers of traditional public schools identified one of these styles and 81% of teachers from charter schools identified one of these styles indicating both groups have similar preferred styles. Surprisingly, few of the participants in either group of the study were aligned with Visionary Leadership or Change Leadership. Although people have a preferred leadership style based on personality traits, it is possible to learn the skills needed for other leadership styles. The results of this study indicate emphasis should be placed on developing visionary leadership skills and change leadership skills. Hoyle (2007) emphasized the importance of understanding why some of our educational leadership program graduates fail to be successful in the field. While it is important to realize that school leaders must have good managerial skills as well as good leadership skills this research indicates students come to leadership preparation programs with a predisposition to learn management skills. Based on this research, it may be that educational leadership programs are not recognizing the need to provide specific learning approaches that lead to the development of transformational leader

    Electrophoresis in the Comet Assay

    The comet assay is a sensitive technique to measure lesions in DNA, based on electrophoretic separation of DNA from cells embedded in agarose. Movement of DNA fragments is determined by the potential (V/cm), the time, and the viscosity of the medium (agarose). There is historically considerable confusion as to other factors, that is, current, liquid depths, circulation of the liquid, and temperature. Lack of standardization of electrophoresis including suboptimal power supplies and electrophoresis tanks causes considerable variations within and between laboratories. Ring trials have not been able to clearly identify the cause(s) of variation. Comparison of comet data from cohorts of human blood lymphocytes is used in the COST project hCOMET to identify early biomarkers of the disease. This calls for standardization of analysis. We performed measurements of electric potentials in a tank using multiple electrodes. Variations (time/position) were reduced by circulating electrophoresis liquid at 10% (volume) per min; this also stabilized the temperature. Circulation was accompanied by only slightly reduced variation in DNA damage among 384 irradiated cell samples electrophoresed concomitantly. In conclusion, comparing data between laboratories and cohorts must give emphasis to electrophoresis conditions. Results should be specified with respect to voltage (V/cm), time, and agarose concentration. We expect that suitable correction factors for these parameters may reduce inter-laboratory variations in comet data, allowing more precise comparison of results from different human cohorts

    Towards predictive band gaps for halide perovskites: Lessons from one-shot and eigenvalue self-consistent GW

    Halide perovskites constitute a chemically-diverse class of crystals with great promise as photovoltaic absorber materials, featuring band gaps between about 1 and 3.5 eV depending on composition. Their diversity calls for a general computational approach to predicting their band gaps. However, such an approach is still lacking. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation to compute the quasiparticle or fundamental band gap of a set of ten representative halide perovskites: CH3_3NH3_3PbI3_3 (MAPbI3_3), MAPbBr3_3, CsSnBr3_3, (MA)2_2BiTlBr6_6, Cs2_2TlAgBr6_6, Cs2_2TlAgCl6_6, Cs2_2BiAgBr6_6, Cs2_2InAgCl6_6, Cs2_2SnBr6_6, and Cs2_2Au2_2I6_6. Comparing with recent measurements, we find that a standard generalized gradient exchange-correlation functional can significantly underestimate the experimental band gaps of these perovskites, particularly in cases with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and highly dispersive band edges, to a degree that varies with composition. We show that these nonsystematic errors are inherited by one-shot G0_0W0_0 and eigenvalue self-consistent GW0_0 calculations, demonstrating that semilocal DFT starting points are insufficient for MAPbI3_3, MAPbBr3_3, CsSnBr3_3, (MA)2_2BiTlBr6_6, Cs2_2TlAgBr6_6, and Cs2_2TlAgCl6_6. On the other hand, we find that DFT with hybrid functionals leads to an improved starting point and GW0_0 results in better agreement with experiment for these perovskites. Our results suggest that GW0_0 with hybrid functional-based starting points are promising for predicting band gaps of systems with large SOC and dispersive bands in this technologically important class of semiconducting crystals

    iqLearn: Interactive Q-Learning in R

    Chronic illness treatment strategies must adapt to the evolving health status of the patient receiving treatment. Data-driven dynamic treatment regimes can offer guidance for clinicians and intervention scientists on how to treat patients over time in order to bring about the most favorable clinical outcome on average. Methods for estimating optimal dynamic treatment regimes, such as Q-learning, typically require modeling non- smooth, nonmonotone transformations of data. Thus, building well-fitting models can be challenging and in some cases may result in a poor estimate of the optimal treatment regime. Interactive Q-learning (IQ-learning) is an alternative to Q-learning that only requires modeling smooth, monotone transformations of the data. The R package iqLearn provides functions for implementing both the IQ-learning and Q-learning algorithms. We demonstrate how to estimate a two-stage optimal treatment policy with iqLearn using a generated data set bmiData which mimics a two-stage randomized body mass index reduction trial with binary treatments at each stage

    Ovalbumin sensitization and challenge increases the number of lung cells possessing a mesenchymal stromal cell phenotype

    Abstract Background Recent studies have indicated the presence of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in human lung diseases. Excess airway smooth muscle, myofibroblasts and activated fibroblasts have each been noted in asthma, suggesting that mesenchymal progenitor cells play a role in asthma pathogenesis. We therefore sought to determine whether MSCs are present in the lungs of ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized and challenged mice, a model of allergic airways disease. Methods Balb/c mice were sensitized and challenged with PBS or OVA over a 25 day period. Flow cytometry as well as colony forming and differentiation potential were used to analyze the emergence of MSCs along with gene expression studies using immunochemical analyses, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and gene expression beadchips. Results A CD45-negative subset of cells expressed Stro-1, Sca-1, CD73 and CD105. Selection for these markers and negative selection against CD45 yielded a population of cells capable of adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation. Lungs from OVA-treated mice demonstrated a greater average colony forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) than control mice. Sorted cells differed from unsorted lung adherent cells, exhibiting a pattern of gene expression nearly identical to bone marrow-derived sorted cells. Finally, cells isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage of a human asthma patient showed identical patterns of cell surface markers and differentiation potential.
