Thermomechanical Behavior of the HL-LHC 11 Tesla Nb3Sn Magnet Coil Constituents during Reaction Heat Treatment
The knowledge of the temperature induced changes of the superconductor
volume, and of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the different coil and
tooling materials is required for predicting the coil geometry and the stress
distribution in the coil after the Nb3Sn reaction heat treatment. In the
present study we have measured the Young's and shear moduli of the HL-LHC 11 T
Nb3Sn dipole magnet coil and reaction tool constituents during in situ heat
cycles with the dynamic resonance method. The thermal expansion behaviours of
the coil components and of a free standing Nb3Sn wire were compared based on

The Search for Stable, Massive, Elementary Particles
In this paper we review the experimental and observational searches for
stable, massive, elementary particles other than the electron and proton. The
particles may be neutral, may have unit charge or may have fractional charge.
They may interact through the strong, electromagnetic, weak or gravitational
forces or through some unknown force. The purpose of this review is to provide
a guide for future searches - what is known, what is not known, and what appear
to be the most fruitful areas for new searches. A variety of experimental and
observational methods such as accelerator experiments, cosmic ray studies,
searches for exotic particles in bulk matter and searches using astrophysical

Workers in the vanguard: the 1960 Industrial Relations Ordinance and the struggle for independence in Aden
The promulgation in 1960 of a new Industrial Relations Ordinance in Aden was a singular event in the history of British decolonisation because it made many forms of strike action illegal. Earlier initiatives to liberalise trade union law in the colonies were intended to channel and manage the discontent of workers; but for nationalist movements, the new order in industrial relations provided an opportunity to mobilise workers in the cause of independence. Aden, which was the location of a significant British base, a major oil refinery and a key commercial port, became the site of a bitter confrontation between the nascent trade union movement and the colonial administration. Three aspects of the conflict were of particular significance. First, Aden’s unique political status as a British colony in the Arab world and it strategic and economic value, contributed to the fractious industrial relations environment. Secondly, conflicts between workers and the colonial government demonstrate continuity with wider British efforts to suppress anti-colonial dissent and demonstrate that charges of appeasement in the last years of empire are not well founded. Lastly, the exceptional nature of the new legislation attracted the critical attention of the ILO and the major international trade union confederations, which internationalised the dispute over the IRO. An examination of the manner in which the British government sought to regulate its relations with various labour organisations, including the British TUC, the colonial ATUC and the two rival international labour confederations of the WFTU and ICFTU, demonstrates that the conduct of industrial relations in Aden was significant in the context of both the Cold War and decolonisation
Multicenter evaluation of a lateral-flow device test for diagnosing invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in ICU patients.
Published onlineClinical TrialJournal ArticleMulticenter StudyResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tINTRODUCTION: The incidence of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is increasing, and early diagnosis of the disease and treatment with antifungal drugs is critical for patient survival. Serum biomarker tests for IPA typically give false-negative results in non-neutropenic patients, and galactomannan (GM) detection, the preferred diagnostic test for IPA using bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), is often not readily available. Novel approaches to IPA detection in ICU patients are needed. In this multicenter study, we evaluated the performance of an Aspergillus lateral-flow device (LFD) test for BAL IPA detection in critically ill patients. METHODS: A total of 149 BAL samples from 133 ICU patients were included in this semiprospective study. Participating centers were the medical university hospitals of Graz, Vienna and Innsbruck in Austria and the University Hospital of Mannheim, Germany. Fungal infections were classified according to modified European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group criteria. RESULTS: Two patients (four BALs) had proven IPA, fourteen patients (sixteen BALs) had probable IPA, twenty patients (twenty-one BALs) had possible IPA and ninety-seven patients (one hundred eight BALs) did not fulfill IPA criteria. Sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value, positive predictive value and diagnostic odds ratios for diagnosing proven and probable IPA using LFD tests of BAL were 80%, 81%, 96%, 44% and 17.6, respectively. Fungal BAL culture exhibited a sensitivity of 50% and a specificity of 85%. CONCLUSION: LFD tests of BAL showed promising results for IPA diagnosis in ICU patients. Furthermore, the LFD test can be performed easily and provides rapid results. Therefore, it may be a reliable alternative for IPA diagnosis in ICU patients if GM results are not rapidly available. Coherent pion production in neutrino nucleus collision in the 1 GeV region
We calculate cross sections for coherent pion production in nuclei induced by
neutrinos and antineutrinos of the electron and muon type. The analogies and
differences between this process and the related ones of coherent pion
production induced by photons, or the (p,n) and reactions are
discussed. The process is one of the several ones occurring for intermediate
energy neutrinos, to be considered when detecting atmospheric neutrinos. For
this purpose the results shown here can be easily extrapolated to other

High-Level Expression of Various Apolipoprotein (a) Isoforms by "Transferrinfection". The Role of Kringle IV Sequences in the Extracellular Association with Low-Density Lipoprotein
Characterization of the assembly of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is of fundamental importance to understanding the biosynthesis and metabolism of this atherogenic lipoprotein. Since no established cell lines exist that express Lp(a) or apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)], a "transferrinfection" system for apo(a) was developed utilizing adenovirus receptor- and transferrin receptor-mediated DNA uptake into cells. Using this method, different apo(a) cDNA constructions of variable length, due to the presence of 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, or 18 internal kringle IV sequences, were expressed in cos-7 cells or CHO cells. All constructions contained kringle IV-36, which includes the only unpaired cysteine residue (Cys-4057) in apo(a). r-Apo(a) was synthesized as a precursor and secreted as mature apolipoprotein into the medium. When medium containing r-apo(a) with 9, 15, or 18 kringle IV repeats was mixed with normal human plasma LDL, stable complexes formed that had a bouyant density typical of Lp(a). Association was substantially decreased if Cys-4057 on r-apo(a) was replaced by Arg by site-directed mutagenesis or if Cys-4057 was chemically modified. Lack of association was also observed with r-apo(a) containing only 3, 5, or 7 kringle IV repeats without "unique kringle IV sequences", although Cys-4057 was present in all of these constructions. Synthesis and secretion of r-apo(a) was not dependent on its sialic acid content. r-Apo(a) was expressed even more efficiently in sialylation-defective CHO cells than in wild-type CHO cells. In transfected CHO cells defective in the addition of N-acetylglucosamine, apo(a) secretion was found to be decreased by 50%. Extracellular association with LDL was not affected by the carbohydrate moiety of r-apo(a), indicating a protein-protein interaction between r-apo(a) and apoB. These results show that, besides kringle IV-36, other kringle IV sequences are necessary for the extracellular association of r-apo(a) with LDL. Changes in the carbohydrate moiety of apo(a), however, do not affect complex formation
The Density Profiles of Massive, Relaxed Galaxy Clusters. II. Separating Luminous and Dark Matter in Cluster Cores
We present stellar and dark matter (DM) density profiles for a sample of
seven massive, relaxed galaxy clusters derived from strong and weak
gravitational lensing and resolved stellar kinematic observations within the
centrally-located brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). In Paper I of the series,
we demonstrated that the total density profile derived from these data, which
span 3 decades in radius, is consistent with numerical DM-only simulations at
radii >~ 5-10 kpc, despite the significant contribution of stellar material in
the core. Here we decompose the inner mass profiles of these clusters into
stellar and dark components. Parametrizing the DM density profile as a power
law rho_DM ~ r^{-\beta} on small scales, we find a mean slope = 0.50 +-
0.10 (random) +0.14-0.13 (systematic). Alternatively, cored Navarro-Frenk-White
(NFW) profiles with = 1.14 +- 0.13 (random) +0.14-0.22
(systematic) provide an equally good description. These density profiles are
significantly shallower than canonical NFW models at radii <~ 30 kpc,
comparable to the effective radii of the BCGs. The inner DM profile is
correlated with the distribution of stars in the BCG, suggesting a connection
between the inner halo and the assembly of stars in the central galaxy. The
stellar mass-to-light ratio inferred from lensing and stellar dynamics is
consistent with that inferred using stellar population synthesis models if a
Salpeter initial mass function is adopted. We compare these results to theories
describing the interaction between baryons and DM in cluster cores, including
adiabatic contraction models and the possible effects of galaxy mergers and
active galactic nucleus feedback, and evaluate possible signatures of
