Characterization of lipoprotein composition and function in pediatric psoriasis reveals a more atherogenic profile
The alpha 1/beta 1 and alpha 6/beta 1 integrin heterodimers mediate cell attachment to distinct sites on laminin.
This study was undertaken to determine the roles of individual alpha/beta 1 integrin heterodimers in promoting cellular interactions with the different attachment-promoting domains of laminin (LN). To do this, antibodies to the integrin beta 1 subunit or to specific integrin alpha subunits were tested for effects on cell attachment to LN, to elastase fragments E1-4 and E1, derived from the short arms and core of LN's cruciform structure, and to fragment E8 derived from the long arm of this structure. The human JAR choriocarcinoma cells used in this study attached to LN and to fragments E1 and E8. Attachment to E1-4 required a much higher substrate coating concentration, suggesting that it is a poor substrate for JAR cell attachment. The ability of cells to attach to different LN domains suggested the presence of more than one LN receptor. These multiple LN receptors were shown to be beta 1 integrin heterodimers because antibodies to the integrin beta 1 subunit inhibited attachment of JAR cells to LN and its three fragments. To identify the individual integrin alpha/beta 1 heterodimers that mediate interactions with these LN domains, mAbs specific for individual beta 1 heterodimers in human cells were used to study JAR cell interactions with LN and its fragments. An anti-alpha 6/beta 1-specific mAb, GoH3, virtually eliminated cell attachment to E8 and partially inhibited attachment to E1 and intact LN. Thus the major alpha 6/beta 1 attachment domain is present in fragment E8. An alpha 1/beta 1-specific mAb (S2G3) strongly inhibited cell attachment to collagen IV and partially inhibited JAR attachment to LN fragment E1. Thus, the alpha 1/beta 1 heterodimer is a dual receptor for collagen IV and LN, interacting with LN at a site in fragment E1. In combination, the anti-alpha 1- and anti-alpha 6-specific antibodies completely inhibited JAR cell attachment to LN and fragment E1. Thus, the alpha 1/beta 1 and alpha 6/beta 1 integrin heterodimers each function as LN receptors and act together to mediate the interactions of human JAR choriocarcinoma cells with LN

Planar laser induced fluorescence for temperature measurement of optical thermocavitation
Pulsed laser-induced cavitation, has been the subject of many studies describing bubble growth, collapse and ensuing shock waves. To a lesser extent, hydrodynamics of continuous wave (CW) cavitation or thermocavitation have also been reported. However, the temperature field around these bubbles has not been measured, partly because a sensor placed in the fluid would interfere with the bubble dynamics, but also because the short-lived bubble lifetimes (∼70–200 µs) demand high sampling rates which are costly to achieve via infrared (IR) imaging. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) provides a non-intrusive alternative technique to costly IR imaging to measure the temperature around laser-induced cavitation bubbles. A 440 nm laser sheet excites rhodamine-B dye to fluoresce while thermocavitation is induced by a CW 810 nm laser. Post-calibration, the fluorescence intensity captured with a high-speed Phantom Miro camera is correlated to temperature field adjacent to the bubble. Using shadowgraphy and PLIF, a significant decrease in sensible heat is observed in the nucleation site– temperature decreases after bubble collapse and the initial heated volume of liquid shrinks. Based on irradiation time and temperature, the provided optical energy is estimated to be converted up to 50% into acoustic energy based on the bubble's size, with larger bubbles converting larger percentages
A Novel Approach to Multimedia Ontology Engineering for Automated Reasoning over Audiovisual LOD Datasets
Multimedia reasoning, which is suitable for, among others, multimedia content
analysis and high-level video scene interpretation, relies on the formal and
comprehensive conceptualization of the represented knowledge domain. However,
most multimedia ontologies are not exhaustive in terms of role definitions, and
do not incorporate complex role inclusions and role interdependencies. In fact,
most multimedia ontologies do not have a role box at all, and implement only a
basic subset of the available logical constructors. Consequently, their
application in multimedia reasoning is limited. To address the above issues,
VidOnt, the very first multimedia ontology with SROIQ(D) expressivity and a
DL-safe ruleset has been introduced for next-generation multimedia reasoning.
In contrast to the common practice, the formal grounding has been set in one of
the most expressive description logics, and the ontology validated with
industry-leading reasoners, namely HermiT and FaCT++. This paper also presents
best practices for developing multimedia ontologies, based on my ontology
engineering approach
Crystallization of SHARPIN using an automated two-dimensional grid screen for optimization
An N-terminal fragment of human SHARPIN was recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized. Crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction were obtained by a one-step optimization of seed dilution and protein concentration using a two-dimensional grid screen. The crystals belonged to the primitive tetragonal space group P4(3)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 61.55, c = 222.81 Å. Complete data sets were collected from native and selenomethionine-substituted protein crystals at 100 K to 2.6 and 2.0 Å resolution, respectively
On correlation functions of Wilson loops, local and non-local operators
We discuss and extend recent conjectures relating partial null limits of
correlation functions of local gauge invariant operators and the expectation
value of null polygonal Wilson loops and local gauge invariant operators. We
point out that a particular partial null limit provides a strategy for the
calculation of the anomalous dimension of short twist-two operators at weak and
strong coupling.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure
Scattering of Giant Holes
We study scalar excitations of high spin operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills
theory, which are dual to solitons propagating on a long folded string in AdS_3
x S^1. In the spin chain description of the gauge theory, these are associated
to holes in the magnon distribution in the sl(2,R) sector. We compute the
all-loop hole S-matrix from the asymptotic Bethe ansatz, and expand in leading
orders at weak and strong coupling. The worldsheet S-matrix of solitonic
excitations on the GKP string is calculated using semiclassical quantization.
We find an exact agreement between the gauge theory and string theory results.Comment: 13 pages. v2: minor corrections, references adde
Impact of the de-alloying kinetics and alloy microstructure on the final morphology of de-alloyed meso-porous metal films
Nano-textured porous metal materials present unique surface properties due to their enhanced surface energy with potential applications in sensing, molecular separation and catalysis. In this paper, commercial alloy foils, including brass (Cu85Zn15 and Cu70Zn30) and white gold (Au50Ag50) foils have been chemically de-alloyed to form nano-porous thin films. The impact of the initial alloy micro-structure and number of phases, as well as chemical de-alloying (DA) parameters, including etchant concentration, time and solution temperature on the final nano-porous thin film morphology and properties were investigated by electron microscopy (EM). Furthermore, the penetration depth of the pores across the alloys were evaluated through the preparation of cross sections by focus ion beam (FIB) milling. It is demonstrated that ordered pores ranging between 100 nm and 600 nm in diameter and 2–5 μm in depth can be successfully formed for the range of materials tested. The microstructure of the foils were obtained by electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and linked to development of pits across the material thickness and surface during DA. The role of selective etching of both noble and sacrificial metal phases of the alloy were discussed in light of the competitive surface etching across the range of microstructures and materials tested
