    Abdominaler Schmerz

    Get PDF

Pion Content of the Nucleon as seen in the NA51 Drell-Yan experiment

    Get PDF
In a recent CERN Drell-Yan experiment the NA51 group found a strong asymmetry of uˉ\bar u and dˉ\bar d densities in the proton at x0.18x\simeq0.18. We interpret this result as a decisive confirmation of the pion-induced sea in the nucleon.Comment: 10 pages + 3 figures, Preprint KFA-IKP(TH)-1994-14 .tex file. Universal amplitude ratios from numerical studies of the three-dimensional O(2) model

We investigate the three-dimensional O(2) model near the critical point by Monte Carlo simulations and calculate the major universal amplitude ratios of the model. The ratio U_0=A+/A- is determined directly from the specific heat data at zero magnetic field. The data do not, however, allow to extract an accurate estimate for alpha. Instead, we establish a strong correlation of U_0 with the value of alpha used in the fit. This numerical alpha-dependence is given by A+/A- = 1 -4.20(5) alpha + O(alpha^2). For the special alpha-values used in other calculations we find full agreement with the corresponding ratio values, e. g. that of the shuttle experiment with liquid helium. On the critical isochore we obtain the ratio xi+/xi-_T=0.293(9), and on the critical line the ratio xi_T^c/xi_L^c=1.957(10) for the amplitudes of the transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths. These two ratios are independent of the used alpha or nu-values.Comment: 34 pages, 19 Ps-figures, Latex2e, revised version, to be published in J. Phys.

Reggeon and pion contributions in semi-exclusive diffractive processes at HERA

A detailed analysis of semi-exclusive diffractive processes in e-p DIS at HERA, with the diffractive final states in the forward direction is presented. The contributions of the subleading f_2, \omega, a_2, \rho reggeons and the pion exchanges to the diffractive structure function with the forward proton or neutron are estimated. It is found that the (a_2,\rho) reggeons are entirely responsible for the forward neutron production at x_P < 10^{-3}. The \pi N production in the forward region is estimated using the Deck mechanism. The significance of this reaction for the processes measured at HERA, especially with the leading neutron, is discussed.Comment: Strongly revised version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D. Non-perturbative structure of the polarized nucleon sea

We investigate the flavour and quark-antiquark structure of the polarized nucleon by calculating the parton distribution functions of the nucleon sea using the meson cloud model. We find that the SU(2) flavor symmetry in the light antiquark sea and quark-antiquark symmetry in the strange quark sea are broken, {\it i.e.} \Delta\ubar < \Delta \dbar and \Delta s < \Delta \sbar. The polarization of the strange sea is found to be positive, which is in contradiction to previous analyses. We predict a much larger quark-antiquark asymmetry in the polarized strange quark sea than that in the unpolarized strange quark sea. Our results for both polarized light quark sea and polarized strange quark sea are consistent with the recent HERMES data.Comment: RevTex, 17 pages plus 8 PS figure

Critical behaviour and scaling functions of the three-dimensional O(6) model

We numerically investigate the three-dimensional O(6) model on 12^3 to 120^3 lattices within the critical region at zero magnetic field, as well as at finite magnetic field on the critical isotherm and for several fixed couplings in the broken and the symmetric phase. We obtain from the Binder cumulant at vanishing magnetic field the critical coupling J_c=1.42865(3). The universal value of the Binder cumulant at this point is g_r(J_c)=-1.94456(10). At the critical coupling, the critical exponents \gamma=1.604(6), \beta=0.425(2) and \nu=0.818(5) are determined from a finite-size-scaling analysis. Furthermore, we verify predicted effects induced by massless Goldstone modes in the broken phase. The results are well described by the perturbative form of the model's equation of state. Our O(6)-result is compared to the corresponding Ising, O(2) and O(4) scaling functions. Finally, we study the finite-size-scaling behaviour of the magnetisation on the pseudocritical line.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures, REVTEX, fixed an error in the determination of R_\chi and changed the corresponding line in figure 13

Factorization Breaking in Dijet Photoproduction with a Leading Neutron

    Get PDF
The production of dijets with a leading neutron in ep-interactions at HERA is calculated in leading order and next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD using a pion-exchange model. Differential cross sections for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction are presented as a function of several kinematic variables. By comparing the theoretical predictions for DIS dijets to recent H1 data, the pion flux factor together with the parton distribution functions of the pion is determined. The dijet cross sections in photoproduction show factorization breaking if compared to the H1 photoproduction data. The suppression factor is S = 0.48 (0.64) for resolved (global) suppression.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Design and Test of a Forward Neutron Calorimeter for the ZEUS Experiment

    Get PDF
A lead scintillator sandwich sampling calorimeter has been installed in the HERA tunnel 105.6 m from the central ZEUS detector in the proton beam direction. It is designed to measure the energy and scattering angle of neutrons produced in charge exchange ep collisions. Before installation the calorimeter was tested and calibrated in the H6 beam at CERN where 120 GeV electrons, muons, pions and protons were made incident on the calorimeter. In addition, the spectrum of fast neutrons from charge exchange proton-lucite collisions was measured. The design and construction of the calorimeter is described, and the results of the CERN test reported. Special attention is paid to the measurement of shower position, shower width, and the separation of electromagnetic showers from hadronic showers. The overall energy scale as determined from the energy spectrum of charge exchange neutrons is compared to that obtained from direct beam hadrons.Comment: 45 pages, 22 Encapsulated Postscript figures, submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Method
