Computing with functions in spherical and polar geometries I. The sphere
A collection of algorithms is described for numerically computing with smooth
functions defined on the unit sphere. Functions are approximated to essentially
machine precision by using a structure-preserving iterative variant of Gaussian
elimination together with the double Fourier sphere method. We show that this
procedure allows for stable differentiation, reduces the oversampling of
functions near the poles, and converges for certain analytic functions.
Operations such as function evaluation, differentiation, and integration are
particularly efficient and can be computed by essentially one-dimensional
algorithms. A highlight is an optimal complexity direct solver for Poisson's
equation on the sphere using a spectral method. Without parallelization, we
solve Poisson's equation with million degrees of freedom in one minute on
a standard laptop. Numerical results are presented throughout. In a companion
paper (part II) we extend the ideas presented here to computing with functions

Family-supportive supervision (FSS) refers to the degree to which employees perceive their immediate supervisors as exhibiting attitudes and behaviors that are supportive of their family role demands (Hammer, Kossek, Zimmerman, & Daniels, 2007; Kossek, Pichler, Bodner & Hammer, 2011: Thomas & Ganster, 1995). A growing body of research suggests that leaders\u27 and supervisors\u27 social support of employees\u27 needs to jointly carry out work and family demands is important for general health and job attitudes, such as satisfaction, work-family conflict, commitment, and intention to turn over (Hammer, Kossek, Anger, Bodner, & Zimmerman, 2009; Kossek et al., 2011). Characterizing a benchmark scenario for heavy Higgs boson searches in the Georgi-Machacek model
The Georgi-Machacek model is used to motivate and interpret LHC searches for
doubly- and singly-charged Higgs bosons decaying into vector boson pairs. In
this paper we study the constraints on and phenomenology of the "H5plane"
benchmark scenario in the Georgi-Machacek model, which has been proposed for
use in these searches. We show that the entire H5plane benchmark is compatible
with the LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson couplings. We also point
out that, over much of the H5plane benchmark, the lineshapes of the two CP-even
neutral heavy Higgs bosons and will overlap and interfere when
produced in vector boson fusion with decays to or . Finally we
compute the decay branching ratios of the additional heavy Higgs bosons within
the H5plane benchmark to facilitate the development of search strategies for

A preliminary evaluation of an F100 engine parameter estimation process using flight data
The parameter estimation algorithm developed for the F100 engine is described. The algorithm is a two-step process. The first step consists of a Kalman filter estimation of five deterioration parameters, which model the off-nominal behavior of the engine during flight. The second step is based on a simplified steady-state model of the compact engine model (CEM). In this step, the control vector in the CEM is augmented by the deterioration parameters estimated in the first step. The results of an evaluation made using flight data from the F-15 aircraft are presented, indicating that the algorithm can provide reasonable estimates of engine variables for an advanced propulsion control law development
