Eighth DOD/NASA/FAA Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design, Part 2
Papers presented at the conference are compiled. The conference provided a forum for the scientific community to exchange composite structures design information and an opportunity to observe recent progress in composite structures design and technology. Part 2 contains papers related to the following subject areas: the application in design; methodology in design; and reliability in design
Temperature dependent asymmetry of the nonlocal spin-injection resistance: evidence for spin non-conserving interface scattering
We report nonlocal spin injection and detection experiments on mesoscopic
Co-Al2O3-Cu spin valves. We have observed a temperature dependent asymmetry in
the nonlocal resistance between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the
magnetic injector and detector. This strongly supports the existence of a
nonequilibrium resistance that depends on the relative orientation of the
detector magnetization and the nonequilibrium magnetization in the normal metal
providing evidence for increasing interface spin scattering with temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL, minor

How Physicians Feel About Assisting Female Victims of Intimate-Partner Violence
Purpose. To assess the feelings of physicians about assisting female victims of intimate-partner violence (IPV), and to examine factors related to positive and negative feelings about assisting victims of IPV. Method. In 1998, a total site sample of 150 physicians practicing in a large general hospital in the area of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was surveyed by questionnaire via the mail. Four specialties were represented: emergency medicine, family practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and psychiatry. The questionnaire asked about medical training and training in assisting victims of IPV The physicians\u27 feelings about working with victims of IPV were measured on a nine-item, five-point semantic differential scale. Results. A total of 76 physicians responded to the questionnaire (response rate=51%). Only a minority (11%) had overall positive feeling scores about assisting victims of IPV While most physicians reported that it was significant work, the great majority also felt that it was difficult, low-paying, and stressful. Training in assisting victims of IPV, in medical school or afterwards, did not appear to influence feelings about assisting victims of IPV However, physicians who were white and who were married (the majority of the respondents) were significantly more likely than the other respondents to feel negatively about providing services to victims of IPV. Conclusion. Graduate medical education and training programs need to address the association of negative feelings with helping women harmed by IPV, because these feelings may interfere with the appropriate screening, referral, and treatment of these victims
Low frequency noise characteristics of sub-micron magnetic tunnel junctions
We report that low frequency (up to 200 kHz) noise spectra of magnetic tunnel
junctions with areas ~10^{-10}cm^2$ at 10 Kelvin deviate significantly from the
typical 1/f behavior found in large area junctions at room temperature. In most
cases, a Lorentzian-like shape with characteristic time between 0.1 and 10 ms
is observed, which indicates only a small number of fluctuators contribute to
the measured noise. By investigating the dependence of noise on both the
magnitude and orientation of an applied magnetic field, we find that
magnetization fluctuations in both free and reference layers are the main
sources of noise in these devices. At small fields, where the noise from the
free layer is dominant, a linear relation between the measured noise and
angular magnetoresistance susceptibility can be established.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

Film Edge Nonlocal Spin Valves
Spintronics is a new paradigm for integrated digital electronics. Recently
established as a niche for nonvolatile magnetic random access memory (MRAM), it
offers new functionality while demonstrating low power and high speed
performance. However, to reach high density spintronic technology must make a
transition to the nanometer scale. Prototype devices are presently made using a
planar geometry and have an area determined by the lithographic feature size,
currently about 100 nm. Here we present a new nonplanar geometry in which one
lateral dimension is given by a film thickness, the order of 10 nm. With this
new approach, cell sizes can shrink by an order of magnitude. The geometry is
demonstrated with a nonlocal spin valve, where we study devices with an
injector/detector separation much less than the spin diffusion length.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
The Use of Sunn Hemp as Forage in Florida
Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) is a warm-season annual legume that has been widely used as cover crop; however, there is potential to use sunn hemp as forage in subtropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate management practices to improve the efficiency of using sunn hemp as a forage crop. The study was conducted in Ona, Florida, USA from 2016 to 2018 and tested the factorial arrangement of five sunn hemp genotypes (Crescent Sunn, Ubon, Blue Leaf, and AU Golden) and two harvest times (60 d after seeding or flowering) with four replicates. There was a cultivar × harvest period effect on HA, crude protein (CP), and in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) concentrations. Herbage accumulation was greater at flowering than 60 d harvest for all cultivars; however, the magnitude of increase was greater for Blue Leaf and Crescent Sun than AU Golden and Ubon. AU Golden and Ubon flowered at 83 and 92 d after seeding, while Blue Leaf and Crescent Sun flowered or were harvested at 166 d after seeding. AU Golden and Crescent Sunn had the greatest CP at 60 d harvest, and Blue Leaf and Ubon had the least CP concentrations. AU Golden and Crescent Sun had the greatest IVDOM at 60-d harvest; however, AU Golden and Ubon had greater IVDOM than Blue Leaf and Crescent Sun at flowering. Sunn hemp may be a feasible warm-season annual legume to be used in forage systems in Florida and harvest 60 d after seeding would results in forage with greater nutritive value
