Heuristic Models of Two-Fermion Relativistic Systems with Field-Type Interaction
We use the chain of simple heuristic expedients to obtain perturbative and
exactly solvable relativistic spectra for a family of two-fermionic bound
systems with Coulomb-like interaction. In the case of electromagnetic
interaction the spectrum coincides up to the second order in a coupling
constant with that following from the quantum electrodynamics. Discrepancy
occurs only for S-states which is the well-known difficulty in the bound-state
problem. The confinement interaction is considered too.

Black Holes and Flop Transitions in M-Theory on Calabi-Yau Threefolds
We present fivedimensional extreme black hole solutions of M-theory
compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds and study these solutions in the context
of flop transitions in the extended Kahler cone. In particular we consider a
specific model and present black hole solutions, breaking half of N=2
supersymmetry, in two regions of the extended Kahler cone, which are connected
by a flop transition. The conditions necessary to match both solutions at the
flop transition are analysed. Finally we also discuss the conditions to obtain
massless black holes at the flop transition.Comment: 19 pp, LaTe
Superform formulation for vector-tensor multiplets in conformal supergravity
The recent papers arXiv:1110.0971 and arXiv:1201.5431 have provided a
superfield description for vector-tensor multiplets and their Chern-Simons
couplings in 4D N = 2 conformal supergravity. Here we develop a superform
formulation for these theories. Furthermore an alternative means of gauging the
central charge is given, making use of a deformed vector multiplet, which may
be thought of as a variant vector-tensor multiplet. Its Chern-Simons couplings
to additional vector multiplets are also constructed. This multiplet together
with its Chern-Simons couplings are new results not considered by de Wit et al.

Third post-Newtonian constrained canonical dynamics for binary point masses in harmonic coordinates
The conservative dynamics of two point masses given in harmonic coordinates
up to the third post-Newtonian (3pN) order is treated within the framework of
constrained canonical dynamics. A representation of the approximate Poincar\'e
algebra is constructed with the aid of Dirac brackets. Uniqueness of the
generators of the Poincar\'e group resp. the integrals of motion is achieved by
imposing their action on the point mass coordinates to be identical with that
of the usual infinitesimal Poincar\'e transformations. The second
post-Coulombian approximation to the dynamics of two point charges as predicted
by Feynman-Wheeler electrodynamics in Lorentz gauge is treated similarly.Comment: 42 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Flop Transitions in M-theory Cosmology
We study flop-transitions for M-theory on Calabi-Yau three-folds and their
applications to cosmology in the context of the effective five-dimensional
supergravity theory. In particular, the additional hypermultiplet which becomes
massless at the transition is included in the effective action. We find the
potential for this hypermultiplet which includes quadratic and quartic terms as
well as additional dependence on the Kahler moduli. By constructing explicit
cosmological solutions, it is demonstrated that a flop-transition can indeed by
achieved dynamically, as long as the hypermultiplet is set to zero. Once
excitations of the hypermultiplet are taken into account we find that the
transition is generically not completed but the system is stabilised close to
the transition region. Regions of moduli space close to flop-transitions can,
therefore, be viewed as preferred by the cosmological evolution.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, 8 eps-figures, typos correcte
AdS and stabilized extra dimensions in multidimensional gravitational models with nonlinear scalar curvature terms 1/R and R^4
We study multidimensional gravitational models with scalar curvature
nonlinearities of the type 1/R and R^4. It is assumed that the corresponding
higher dimensional spacetime manifolds undergo a spontaneous compactification
to manifolds with warped product structure. Special attention is paid to the
stability of the extra-dimensional factor spaces. It is shown that for certain
parameter regions the systems allow for a freezing stabilization of these
spaces. In particular, we find for the 1/R model that configurations with
stabilized extra dimensions do not provide a late-time acceleration (they are
AdS), whereas the solution branch which allows for accelerated expansion (the
dS branch) is incompatible with stabilized factor spaces. In the case of the
R^4 model, we obtain that the stability region in parameter space depends on
the total dimension D=dim(M) of the higher dimensional spacetime M. For D>8 the
stability region consists of a single (absolutely stable) sector which is
shielded from a conformal singularity (and an antigravity sector beyond it) by
a potential barrier of infinite height and width. This sector is smoothly
connected with the stability region of a curvature-linear model. For D<8 an
additional (metastable) sector exists which is separated from the conformal
singularity by a potential barrier of finite height and width so that systems
in this sector are prone to collapse into the conformal singularity. This
second sector is not smoothly connected with the first (absolutely stable) one.
Several limiting cases and the possibility for inflation are discussed for the
R^4 model.Comment: 28 pages, minor cosmetic improvements, Refs. added; to appear in

Black holes and black strings of N=2, d=5 supergravity in the H-FGK formalism
We study general classes and properties of extremal and non-extremal static
black-hole solutions of N=2, d=5 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets
using the recently proposed H-FGK formalism, which we also extend to static
black strings. We explain how to determine the integration constants and
physical parameters of the black-hole and black-string solutions. We derive
some model-independent statements, including the transformation of non-extremal
flow equations to the form of those for the extremal flow. We apply our methods
to the construction of example solutions (among others a new extremal string
solution of heterotic string theory on K_3 \times S^1). In the cases where we
have calculated it explicitly, the product of areas of the inner and outer
horizon of a non-extremal solution coincides with the square of the
moduli-independent area of the horizon of the extremal solution with the same
charges.Comment: 33 pages. Revised version: references added. No other change
Impact of Rosuvastatin Treatment on HDL-Induced PKC- β
Background. Endothelial function is impaired in chronic heart failure (CHF). Statins upregulate endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) and improve endothelial function. Recent studies demonstrated that HDL stimulates NO production due to eNOS phosphorylation at Ser1177, dephosphorylation at Thr495, and diminished phosphorylation of PKC-βII at Ser660. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of rosuvastatin on HDL mediated eNOS and PKC-βII phosphorylation and its relation to endothelial function. Methods. 18 CHF patients were randomized to 12 weeks of rosuvastatin or placebo. At baseline, 12 weeks, and 4 weeks after treatment cessation we determined lipid levels and isolated HDL. Human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) were incubated with isolated HDL and phosphorylation of eNOS and PKC-βII was evaluated. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) was measured at the radial artery. Results. Rosuvastatin improved FMD significantly. This effect was blunted after treatment cessation. LDL plasma levels were reduced after rosuvastatin treatment whereas drug withdrawal resulted in significant increase. HDL levels remained unaffected. Incubation of HAEC with HDL had no impact on phosphorylation of eNOS or PKC-βII. Conclusion. HDL mediated eNOS and PKC-βII phosphorylation levels in endothelial cells do not change with rosuvastatin in CHF patients and do not mediate the marked improvement in endothelial function
The repulsive nature of naked singularities from the point of view of Quantum Mechanics
We use the Dirac equation coupled to a background metric to examine what
happens to quantum mechanical observables like the probability density and the
radial current in the vicinity of a naked singularity of the
Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m type. We find that the wave function of the Dirac
particle is regular in the point of the singularity. We show that the
probability density is exactly zero at the singularity reflecting
quantum-mechanically the repulsive nature of the naked singularity.
Furthermore, the surface integral of the radial current over a sphere in the
vicinity of the naked singularity turns out to be also zero.Comment: 11 page
