Equations are presented that allow students to quickly calculate present value for mortgage payments and depreciation tax benefits. Calculations can be done witha hand calculator that has a Y x(exponent) function

On the vanishing viscosity limit in a disk

We say that the solution u to the Navier-Stokes equations converges to a solution v to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit if u converges to v in the energy norm uniformly over a finite time interval. Working specifically in the unit disk, we show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing viscosity limit to hold is the vanishing with the viscosity of the time-space average of the energy of u in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity due to modes (eigenfunctions of the Stokes operator) whose frequencies in the radial or the tangential direction lie between L and M. Here, L must be of order less than 1/(viscosity) and M must be of order greater than 1/(viscosity)

Janus Dendritic Ligands for Nanoparticle Assemblies

This project was conducted in the laboratory of Professor Christopher B. Murray at the University of Pennsylvania. The project described herein includes the synthesis of a Janus dendrimer as well as complimentary dendrimers of hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature to study the self-assembly and organizational properties of these molecules on gold surfaces. A complete synthesis and characterization of these molecules is described, as well as grafting the molecules onto both gold nanoparticle and thin film surfaces. How the different dendritic molecules guide self-assembly of the nanoparticles and how the Janus molecule assembles itself on a gold surface was studied. To characterize these systems, TEM and solid state UV-vis were employed, and general trends are described herein

Water power plant for the University of Missouri

"A thesis presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering."Manuscript copy.Includes bibliographical references.Hydro-Electric Power Development is fast becoming one of the largest branches of engineering. Much attention is being paid to it in all good engineering schools. But it is impossible to get much out of the study unless a plant is available for experimental work for the students. Cornell University has such a plant for this use. The engineering of this plant, the water wheels, the electrical equipment, etc. were supplied by various large manufacturing companies at practically cost price. Now that the University of Missouri is giving special courses in hydraulic engineering, it is very essential that she have such a plant at her services. The object of this thesis is to investigate a project that will supply this need. wDigitized at the University of Missouri--Columbia MU Libraries Digitization Lab in 2011

Coupling Between An Optical Phonon and the Kondo Effect

We explore the ultra-fast optical response of Yb_{14}MnSb_{11}, providing further evidence that this Zintl compound is the first ferromagnetic, under-screened Kondo lattice. These experiments also provide the first demonstration of coupling between an optical phonon mode and the Kondo effect.Comment: 4 Pages, 3 Figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

The Use Of Social Media In Building Interest In Wellness On A College Campus

The usage of social media networks, such as websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, had become the number one activity on the internet by 2010. The sweeping increase in usage led organizations to explore the marketing possibilities the networks offered. The turning point occurred when organizations began to ask whether it was feasible to use social media networks as a primary marketing strategy and reduce or ultimately replace traditional marketing efforts. A pilot project focused on a marketing plan that was implemented at a student fitness center, using social media networks as the primary marketing strategy
