A Model for Classical Space-time Co-ordinates

Field equations with general covariance are interpreted as equations for a target space describing physical space time co-ordinates, in terms of an underlying base space with conformal invariance. These equations admit an infinite number of inequivalent Lagrangian descriptions. A model for reparametrisation invariant membranes is obtained by reversing the roles of base and target space variables in these considerations.Comment: 9 pages, Latex. Return to the Ethics Rules as a Standard for Attorney Disqualification: Attempting Consistency in Motions for Disqualification by the Use of Chinese Walls

For years, courts relied heavily on the ethics rules promulgated by the American Bar Association in determining whether to grant motions for disqualification due to attorney conflicts of interest. Recently, however, courts have begun to acknowledge that the significant changes in the legal profession, in addition to the use of motions for disqualification as a tactical device, have rendered strict application of the Model Code of Professional Responsibility and Model Rules of Professional Conduct impractical and unfair in many cases. This article suggests that rather than fighting the trend towards the sanction of screening defenses by law firms, the American Bar Association should guide the use of screening to ensure that the interests of current and former clients are properly protected. The article suggests amending Rule 1.10 of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to ensure a fair balance of interests between the parties, and to decrease the use of motions for disqualification as merely a litigation tactic

Attorneys on Bioethics Committees: Unwelcome Menace or Valuable Asset

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role(s), if any, of the attorney as a member of bioethics committees, especially hospital ethics committees. In the process of determining whether an attorney should serve on these committees, the arguments will contrast the potential role of an attorney with the different types of attorneys who may be chosen to serve as members of a hospital ethics committee. The ultimate conclusion of this paper is that attorneys do have a role on ethics committees, but that the role depends on the type of attorney, the individual committee and the way the committee functions

Capacitors can radiate - some consequences of the two-capacitor problem with radiation

We fill a gap in the arguments of Boykin et al [American Journal of Physics, Vol 70 No. 4, pp 415-420 (2002)] by not invoking an electric current loop (i.e. magnetic dipole model) to account for the radiation energy loss, since an obvious corollary of their results is that the capacitors should radiate directly even if the connecting wires are shrunk to zero length. That this is so is shown here by a direct derivation of capacitor radiation using an oscillating electric dipole radiator model for the capacitors as well as the alternative less widely known magnetic 'charge' current loop representation for an electric dipole [see for example "Electromagnetic Waves" by S.A.Schlekunoff, van Nostrand (1948)]. Implications for Electromagnetic Compliance (EMC) issues as well as novel antenna designs further motivate the purpose of this paper.Comment: 5 Pages with No figure

A systems analysis of solar power potential in coming decades

In the past few centuries, energy consumption has increased dramatically to a point where humans are very much dependant of energy. Under the current nonrenewable energy extraction technique of burning fossil fuels there are many externalities that are negatively impacting the earth. Society is approaching a limit where these formerly cheap forms of energy will become increasingly more expensive due to the difficulty of their extraction. As such, it is apparent that new renewable forms of energy will develop out of necessity to fulfill the energy demand. The purpose of this paper is to examine the different aspects of the promising area of solar energy. The conclusions of the analysis show that a portfolio of alternative energies will be necessary in the future with solar energy, in particular photovoltaic cells, filling the bulk of the energy generation.by Chris Bateman.S.B

Public funding for public goods: A post-Brexit perspective on principles for agricultural policy

The UK Government has announced its intentions to formulate a novel agricultural policy following the principle that public funding should be restricted to the provision of public goods. However, the acceptance, interpretation and application of this principle is the subject of intense debate. We overview the background to this debate, reveal the major flaws in present policy and identify and provide our answers to three key questions which future policy must address: (1) What are the farm related public goods that public money should support?; (2) How should that spending be allocated?; (3) How much should be spent?
