As the Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry continues in its early growth phase, having accomplished a successful synthesis to become a national publication, we note its own apparent power of accommodation equal to the strain of fusing and adjusting internal and external changes.
Psychiatric residency in itself demands such accommodation. A group of finishing second year residents were taking stock of the fir st half of this process: They noted the difficulty in reconciling their initial conceptions and intentions with the subsequent realization of the limits to knowledge or intervention; they called this disillusionment. Others spoke of a converse strengthening as better insight into the range of their abilities made them observe more clearly, act with more leverage. This is also disillusionment in the more positive sense

Learning From Complexity: Effects Of Prior Accidents And Incidents On Airlines' Learning
Using data on accidents and incidents experienced by U.S. commercial airlines from 1983 to 1997, we investigated variation in firm learning by examining whether firms learn more from errors with heterogeneous or homogeneous causes. We measured learning by a reduction in airline accident and incident rates, while controlling for other factors related to accidents and incidents. Our results show that heterogeneity is generally better for learning, as prior heterogeneity in the causes of errors decreases subsequent accident rates, producing a deeper, broader search for causality than simple explanations like >blame the pilot.> The benefits of heterogeneity, however, apply mainly to specialist airlines. Generalist airlines learn, instead, from outside factors such as the experience of others and general improvements in technology. These results suggest a theory of learning across organizational forms: complex forms benefit from simple information, and simple forms benefit from complex information. The implications of our study for learning theories and work on organizational errors are discussed.Business Administratio
A study of noise metric and tone correction accuracy
Methods currently used to measure human response to aircraft flyover noise were investigated. Response to high level aircraft noise usually experienced outdoors was obtained. Response to aircraft flyover noise typical of indoor exposure was also investigated. It was concluded that current methods for evaluating response to aircraft flyover are more accurate for outdoor noise

An exhibition of paintings of the American Old West caught my attention one afternoon, after I had wandered across the street from our affiliate V.A. outpatient clinic to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A popular theme among these romanticized views of the American frontier was the image of the trapper; alone, silent figure working at the nation\u27s interface with the unknown. Several paintings depicted a custom known as the rendez-vous, a semi-annual occurrence wherein the trappers gathered eastward to river outposts in order to socialize, trade information and hand-made maps, restock supplies, and display for sale the bounty gleaned from the previous season
Response to actual and simulated recordings of conventional takeoff and landing jet aircraft
Comparability between noise characteristics of synthesized recordings of aircraft in flight and actual recordings were investigated. Although the synthesized recordings were more smoothly time-varying than the actual recordings and the synthesizer could not produce a comb-filter effect that was present in the actual recordings, results supported the conclusion that annoyance response is comparable to the synthesized and actual recordings. A correction for duration markedly improved the validity of engineering calculation procedures designed to measure noise annoyance. Results led to the conclusion that the magnitude estimation psychophysical method was a highly reliable approach for evaluating engineering calculation procedures designed to measure noise annoyance. For repeated presentations of pairs of actual recordings, differences between judgment results for identical signals ranged from 0.0 to 0.5 db
Hybrid A/D converter for 200 deg C operation
A 12 bit A/D converter was designed and developed which will operate at 200 C with .05 linearity, 1/accuracy, 350 WSec conversion time, and only 455 mW power consumption. This product also necessitated the development of a unique three metal system in which aluminum wire bonding is done utilizing aluminum bonding pads, gold wire bonding to all gold areas, and employment of a nickel interface between gold and aluminum connections. This system totally eliminates the formation of a intermetallics at the bonding interface which can lead to bond failure. This product represents an advancement in electronics as it proved the operation of integrated circuits at high temperature, as well as providing information about both the electrical and mechanical reliability of hybrid circuits at 200 C
Flow transitions in two-dimensional foams
For sufficiently slow rates of strain, flowing foam can exhibit inhomogeneous
flows. The nature of these flows is an area of active study in both
two-dimensional model foams and three dimensional foam. Recent work in
three-dimensional foam has identified three distinct regimes of flow [S. Rodts,
J. C. Baudez, and P. Coussot, Europhys. Lett. {\bf 69}, 636 (2005)]. Two of
these regimes are identified with continuum behavior (full flow and
shear-banding), and the third regime is identified as a discrete regime
exhibiting extreme localization. In this paper, the discrete regime is studied
in more detail using a model two dimensional foam: a bubble raft. We
characterize the behavior of the bubble raft subjected to a constant rate of
strain as a function of time, system size, and applied rate of strain. We
observe localized flow that is consistent with the coexistence of a power-law
fluid with rigid body rotation. As a function of applied rate of strain, there
is a transition from a continuum description of the flow to discrete flow when
the thickness of the flow region is approximately 10 bubbles. This occurs at an
applied rotation rate of approximately
Collective pride, happiness and celebratory emotions: aggregate, network and cultural models
Collective pride is of increasing interest to interdisciplinary emotion researchers. Proud positive emotional climates, waves of celebratory emotion, and elevated group moods occur in large groups such as organizations, communities, and nations in response to success in mega-sport events, positive international attention, praiseworthy group behavior, and the successful completion of projects that confirm a collective’s strengths or enhanced status. This chapter first confronts sources of skepticism about the existence of collective pride as a discrete positive collective emotion. Aggregative, network, and cultural models of collective emotion are then examined through instances of positive group emotion generated in the contexts of mega-sport competitions, social movements and group conflicts. Analysis of several examples follows, and demonstrates the need for a clear distinction between celebratory emotions and predominantly negative forms of defiant and narcissistic group emotion. Conceptual-discursive and phenomenological grounds are used to explore connections between collective pride and collective shame as well as to argue that collective hubris has unique emotional contours.
