Electronic nematic susceptibility of iron-based superconductors

We review our recent experimental results on the electronic nematic phase in electron- and hole-doped BaFe2_2As2_2 and FeSe. The nematic susceptibility is extracted from shear-modulus data (obtained using a three-point-bending method in a capacitance dilatometer) using Landau theory and is compared to the nematic susceptibility obtained from elastoresistivity and Raman data. FeSe is particularly interesting in this context, because of a large nematic, i.e., a structurally distorted but paramagnetic, region in its phase diagram. Scaling of the nematic susceptibility with the spin lattice relaxation rate from NMR, as predicted by the spin-nematic theory, is found in both electron- and hole-doped BaFe2_2As2_2, but not in FeSe. The intricate relationship of the nematic susceptibility to spin and orbital degrees of freedom is discussed.Comment: Invited review article for a special issue on Fe-based superconductors in Comptes Rendus Physiqu

Thermal expansion and Gr\"uneisen parameters of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 - a thermodynamic quest for quantum criticality

Thermal expansion data are used to study the uniaxial pressure dependence of the electronic/magnetic entropy of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Uniaxial pressure is found to be proportional to doping and, thus, also an appropriate tuning parameter in this system. Many of the features predicted to occur for a pressure-tuned quantum critical system, in which superconductivity is an emergent phase hiding the critical point, are observed. The electronic/magnetic Gr\"uneisen parameters associated with the spin-density wave and superconducting transitions further demonstrate an intimate connection between both ordering phenomena.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Regulation of CLC-Ka/barttin by the ubiquitin ligase Nedd4-2 and the serum- and glucocorticoid-dependent kinases

Regulation of ClC-Ka/barttin by the ubiquitin ligase Nedd4-2 and the serum- and glucocorticoid-dependent kinases.BackgroundClC-Ka and ClC-Kb, chloride channels participating in renal tubular Cl− transport, require the coexpression of barttin to become functional. Mutations of the barttin gene lead to the Bartter's syndrome variant BSND, characterized by congenital deafness and severe renal salt wasting. Barttin bears a proline-tyrosine motif, a target structure for the ubiquitin ligase Nedd4-2, which mediates the clearance of channel proteins from the cell membrane. Nedd4-2 is, in turn, a target of the serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase SGK1, which phosphorylates and, thus, inactivates the ubiquitin ligase. ClC-Ka also possesses a SGK1 consensus site in its sequence. We hypothesized that ClC-Ka/barttin is stimulated by SGK1, and down-regulated by Nedd4-2, an effect that may be reversed by SGK1 and its isoforms, SGK2 or SGK3.MethodsTo test this hypothesis, ClC-Ka/barttin was heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes with or without the additional expression of Nedd4-2, SGK1, SGK2, SGK3, constitutively active S422DSGK1, or inactive K127NSGK1.ResultsExpression of ClC-Ka/barttin induced a slightly inwardly rectifying current that was significantly decreased upon coexpression of Nedd4-2, but not the catalytically inactive mutant C938SNedd4-2. The coexpression of S422DSGK1, SGK1, or SGK3, but not SGK2 or K127NSGK1 significantly stimulated the current. Moreover, S422DSGK1, SGK1, and SGK3 also phosphorylated Nedd4-2 and thereby inhibited Nedd4-2 binding to its target. The down-regulation of ClC-Ka/barttin by Nedd4-2 was abolished by elimination of the PY motif in barttin.ConclusionClC-Ka/barttin channels are regulated by SGK1 and SGK3, which may thus participate in the regulation of transport in kidney and inner ear

Attitude Determination in Space with Ambient Light Sensors using Machine Learning for Solar Cell Characterization

Exploration of novel thin-film solar cell technologies outreaches for their application in space. For extraterrestrial tests, irradiance conditions must be well determined to extract quantitative solar cell performances. Here, a new method for solar position determination is presented, based on parallelized ambient light sensor measurements is presented obtained from the sounding rocket experiment Organic and Hybrid Solar Cells In Space during the MAPHEUS-8 mission. The solar position evolution is optimized using stochastic and gradient-based methods in a Bayesian approach. Comparison with independent positioning estimates shows compelling agreement, lying mostly within 5° deviation. The inclusion of a simple Earth irradiation component mitigates a small systematic offset. Further, solution uncertainties are estimated with Monte-Carlo Markov-chain sampling. The point-source irradiation model's accuracy can compete with that of a camera-based trajectory. During equatorial Sun positions, the method's precision appears even higher––the 1σ uncertainty of the derived solar position is as small as 3° for the effective angular deviation. This simple sensor array triangulation method being complementary to other attitude determination methods shows reasonable accuracies and allows implementation in systems of limited computational capabilities to determine the solar position or irradiance conditions for space or terrestrial solar cell applications
