Monitoring and conservation of Loggerhead Turtle's nests on Fethiye Beaches, Turkey

Fethiye beaches are the one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches from Turkey. The reproductive biology of nesting loggerhead turtles was investigated there during three consecutive nesting seasons (2011-2013). A total of 253 nests were recorded in three seasons, and these nests included an average 80.4 eggs per nests. The incubation periods have decreased considerably over the last decade, potentially pointing to a climate change effect. The nest density was 7.2 nests/km in 2011, 10.7 nests/km in 2012 and 12.6 nests/km in 2013. Despite this 3-year increase, the overall number of nests over the last two decades shows a gradual decline, although the pattern differs from beach to beach. It was determined that the habitat loss and tourism activities are the main problems and are effect breeding activities of the species. In this respect, site-specific conservation actions were started at the Fethiye beaches. ©Biharean Biologist, 2016

Field studies were conducted between 2017 and 2019 in order to reveal the gall wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) fauna of the Eastern Black Sea region, and a total of 90 species were identified as a result of these studies. Gall samples were collected from 695 different localities in research area. After collection, adult wasps emerging from their galls have been taxonomically identified in laboratory. The determined species include seven new species (Aulacidea turcica Azmaz & Katılmış, 2020; Au. turguti sp. nov.; Andricus mammadovi sp. nov.; Cynips baskalei Azmaz & Katılmış, 2020; C. fatihi sp. nov.; Phanacis ciceki sp. nov.; Ph. urhani sp. nov.) for current literature and three new records (Synergus consobrinus Giraud in Houard, 1911; S. reinhardi Mayr, 1872; S. ruficornis Hartig, 1840) for Turkish cynipid fauna. By this study, the 61 members of Turkish cynipid fauna were recorded from the Eastern Black Sea region for the first time. In addition, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, 1951 which is harmful to chestnut trees, was determined for the first time in the research region. Sampling localities, number of adult wasp, host plants and/or host galls, gall photographs, and specific distributions of each species are also given

Buna ilaveten Andricus cinsine ait 12 tür, Aphelonyx cinsine ait 2 tür, Callirhytis cinsine ait 1 tür, Ceroptres cinsine ait 2 tür, Cerroneuroterus cinsine ait 2 tür, Chilaspis cinsine ait 1 tür, Cynips cinsine ait 3 tür, Diplolepis cinsine ait 3 tür, Dryocosmus cinsine ait 1 tür, Phanacis cinsine ait 1 tür, Plagiotrochus cinsine ait 1 tür, Synergus cinsine ait 13 tür ve Trigonaspis cinsine ait 2 tür olmak üzere toplam 44 tür çalışma alanından ilk kez kaydedildi. Cynipidae family galls on host plants were collected and carried to laboratory, in the Marmara Region including Istanbul province and its environs between October 2012 and September 2013. The galls were checked on laboratory condition and 265 adult wasp specimens belonging to 29 species were obtained. In result of this study 1 species belonging to 1 genus in Aylacini and 58 species belonging to 12 genera in Cynipini and 4 species belonging to 1 genus in Diplolepidini and 16 species belonging to 3 genera in Synergini were recorded from study area. 9 of total 79 determined species were recorded the first time from Turkey.
