Over the last 20 years, financialization of the housing market has become a topic of increasing public and political concern, especially in high-demand cities. It has also become an important element in academic discussion. The objective of the research was to undertake a comparative study across a range of countries with very different experiences to help understand how financialization is defined and experienced in different contexts and its relative importance as compared to other determinants of housing outcomes. Our research concentrates on 12 countries in North America, Western Europe, Australasia and parts of Asia, plus the city of Hong Kong. These countries were chosen to reflect a variety of relevant experience but also because each has a strong academic community analysing housing and urban systems and the development of financial markets. Within these countries, we identified cities where financialization of housing has been seen as particularly relevant. FORMAÇÃO PROFISSIONAL EM SERVIÇO SOCIAL: OS DESAFIOS POSTOS A SUPERVISÃO DE ESTÁGIO NÃO OBRIGATÓRIO EM SERVIÇO SOCIAL

Resumo Este relato de experiência é oriundo de discussões e reflexões elaboradas por assistentes sociais que atuam na política de saúde de um Hospital Universitário, e assistentes sociais que atuam na política de educação de uma Universidade Pública, em Porto Alegre. Tem como objetivo compartilhar a experiência na supervisão de estágio não obrigatório em Serviço Social a partir da reflexão de como se dá o processo de supervisão de estágio no campo e como a universidade está organizada e/ou planeja se organizar para acompanhar seus acadêmicos. Será abordada a forma como são desenvolvidas as supervisões no campo de estágio pautadas nas Diretrizes Curriculares e no Projeto Ético-Político do Serviço Social, buscando apontar elementos que possam contribuir na formação dos alunos e futuros profissionais

Influences of a Microcystis aeruginosa Kützing bloom on zooplankton populations in Jacarepaguá Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

AbstractJacarepaguá Lagoon is a shallow, hypereutrophic, coastal lagoon located in Rio de Janeiro (RJ, Brazil), with recurrent blooms of cyanobacteria. This study was carried out with the aim to detect the effects of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on zooplankton populations (especially cladocerans) in the lagoon. At two sampling stations we measured temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen and transparency, and collected water samples for chemical analyses of particulate organic carbon (POC), chlorophyll-a and toxins (microcystins), and plankton samples for phytoplankton and zooplankton analyses, from August 1996 to September 1997. Laboratory experiments were also performed to test for toxicity of both natural assemblages and cultured Microcystis. The results showed that temperature, salinity and cyanobacteria biomass were the best descriptors of the population dynamics of Cladocera. In spite of high levels of microcystins in seston, toxins were not generally correlated with the density of Cladocera. Laboratory experiments, however, showed strong evidence of the toxicity of seston to Cladocera. Also, high levels of toxins in seston were associated with a collapse of cladoceran populations in the lagoon, suggesting toxic effects of mycrocystins on these organisms. Rotifers and copepods were less affected by cyanobacteria, maintaining high densities in the lagoon throughout the bloom. We conclude that blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa are potentially harmful for cladoceran populations in nature

Detection of clinically relevant yeast in blood: evaluation of methods for RNA extraction and amplification

Objectives: To evaluate different methods of extraction andpurification of RNA from yeast in blood samples to be used inmolecular-based diagnosis. Methods: Different combinations ofcommercially available kits were tested with blood samplesartificially inoculated with yeast cultures. Results: Qiagen kitsperformed better when compared to other commercial kits bothfor RNA extraction and one-step RT-PCR. Conclusions: Kits using ahot-start approach are better; the choice of kits has an importantimpact on the final result of a test
