    Genetic variability and association studies of some quantitative characters in winter rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

    Information of the variability and the extent and type of relationship of some quantitative characters in rapeseed is important for an efficient breeding program. In addition, the association between seed yield and quality characters, oil and protein content, is of major interest. 10 winter rapeseed genotypes were evaluated for variation, genetic and phenotypic correlations and broad sense heritability for seed yield, yield and quality characters for 2 years. The results revealed significant differences for all yield and quality characters indicated the presence of sufficient genetic variability for effective selection. Variability, broad sense heritability, genetic advance were maximum for oil yield, seed yield followed by protein yield. In addition, very strong correlations were estimated among them. Simultaneous selection regarding seed yield would be an effective way to increase oil yield and protein yield. Plant height was associated with seed yield, oil yield, protein yield, number of pods on main stem and pod length. In conclusion, plant height, pod length, oil yield and protein yield were efficient characters as selection criteria

    New chromosome numbers in the genus Trigonella L. (Fabaceae)from Turkey

    Somatic chromosome numbers of 45 Trigonella L. (Fabaceae), collected from different localities in Turkey was examined. Chromosome numbers were determined as 2n = 14, 16, 30 and 46. B chromosome was also observed in somatic cells of some taxa (Trigonella arcuata C.A. Meyer and Trigonella procumbens (Besser) Reichb.). In addition, one or two satellites were observed in some taxa (Trigonella lunata Boiss., Trigonella velutina Boiss., Trigonella strangulata Boiss., Trigonella crassipes Boiss. and Trigonella cariensis Boiss.).Keywords: Chromosome number, Leguminosae, Trigonell

    The effects of Kanizsa contours on temporal integration and attention in rapid serial visual presentation

    Performance in rapid serial visual presentation tasks has been shown to depend on the temporal integration of target stimuli when they are presented in direct succession. Temporal target integration produces a single, combined representation of visually compatible stimuli, which is comparatively easy to identify. It is currently unknown to what extent target compatibility affects this perceptual behavior, since it has not been studied systematically to date. In the present study the effects of compatibility on temporal integration and attention were investigated by manipulating the Gestalt properties of target features. Of particular interest were configurations in which a global illusory shape was formed when all stimulus features were present; a Kanizsa stimulus, which was expected to have a unifying effect on the perception of the successive targets. The results showed that although the presence of a Kanizsa shape can indeed enhance temporal integration, this was also observed for other good Gestalts, such as due to common fate and closure. Identification accuracy seemed to vary, possibly as a result of masking strength, but this did not seem associated with attentional processing per se. Implications for theories of Gestalt processing and temporal integration are discussed

    Ebenus zekiyeae (Fabaceae), a New Species from Turkey

    Ebenus zekiyeae Aytaç & Yildirim sp. Nova (Fabaceae) is described and illustrated from Erzurum, eastern Anatolia, Turkey. It grows on dry, stony slopes and morphologically resembles E. reesei. Its diagnostic characters are discussed. The leaflet and pollen surface of E. zekiyeae were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Distributions of E. zekiyeae and E. reesei and an identification key to Turkish taxa of Ebenus are provided. © 2018 Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board
