    No full text
SEMRU, at NUI Galway, carried out a survey of overseas visitors to Ireland as part of the Marine Institute’s funded project “Valuing and understanding the dynamics of Ireland’s Ocean Economy” (PBA/SE/16/01). The purpose of the survey was to estimate what proportion of their total holiday expenditure was in coastal areas (coastal tourism) and what proportion was on undertaking marine related activities (marine tourism). The survey, which consisted of face-to-face interviews with 620 overseas visitors, also solicited information on spatial distribution of their different marine related activities and associated expenditure

Challenges and opportunities for LNG as a ship fuel source and an application to bunkering network optimisation

In this research paper we aim to establish a system approach framework to contribute to a better holistic comprehending about utilisation of LNG as a marine fuel source for deep sea container ships operating on the main liner shipping routes. We briefly touch on outlines of price and emission opportunities, as well as operational and safety challenges, and system adaptation stages of LNG bunkering for container ships. We demonstrate an LNG fuelled global marine container transport network model in order to meet requirements of bunkering operations, fleet utilisation and marine container transportation demand. Outcomes of this research will assist further developments of LNG bunkering based liner service operational strategies of deep sea container liner ship operators

SEMRU, at NUI Galway, carried out a survey of domestic residents in Ireland in 2019 as part of the Marine Institute’s funded project “Valuing and understanding the dynamics of Ireland’s Ocean Economy” (PBA/SE/16/01). The purpose of the household survey was to profile the domestic market for single day trips (leisure) and overnight trips (tourism) for coastal and marine related activities in Ireland. The results of the survey are also used to estimate what proportion of an Irish resident’s total domestic tourism expenditure is in coastal areas (coastal tourism) and what proportion is spent on undertaking marine related activities (marine tourism). The survey complements SEMRU’s overseas marine tourism report published in 2019, where the demand for the same activities as analysed here was also examined amongst overseas visitors to Ireland

    Ireland's Ocean Economy Report 2019

Reliable socio-economic marine data is essential if policy makers are to use an evidence based approach to foster development of our ocean related industries. It is also vital if Ireland is to utilise its substantial marine resources in a manner that, as envisioned under the EU Blue Growth Strategy and Ireland’s Integrated Marine Plan, ensures a healthy marine environment and the continued delivery of marine ecosystem services to Irish society. With that in mind, this report provides a detailed analysis of Ireland’s ocean economy over time and presents a complete and comparable profile across thirteen marine related industries, which allows us to observe progress on the targets set out in the Government’s Integrated Marine Plan for Ireland - Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth (2012). The report includes a set of economic projections that forecast Ireland’s ocean economy up to 2018. It also provides a profile of Ireland’s coastal economy using Census of Population Small Area Statistics
