    Selain daripada mengendalikan fungsi pendidikan, sekolah juga diberikan peranan bagi menyediakan tenaga mahir untuk memenuhi keperluan ekonomi negara. Sekolah aliran teknikal dilihat sebagai satu institusi khusus yang memainkan peranan tersebut. Namun begitu, terdapat pelbagai faktor yang boleh mempengaruhi pencapaian pelajar aliran teknikal ini. Tahap sosioekonomi keluarga telah dikenalpasti antara faktor yang boleh mempengaruhi pencapaian pelajar. Kajian ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan perkaitan di antara tahap sosioekonomi keluarga seperti tahap pendidikan bapa, jumlah pendapatan dan saiz keluarga terhadap pencapaian akademik pelajar. Sampel kajian ini ialah pelajar-pelajar tingkatan 4 dan 5 yang menetap di asrama Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Terengganu. Pelajar ini dipilih kerana mereka mendapat kemudahan dan persekitaran pembelajaran yang sama. Seramai 80 orang pelajar dalam jurusan teknikal dipilih secara rawak mudah. Keputusan kajian mendapati bahawa hanya saiz keluarga mempunyai korelasi yang tinggi berbanding tahap pencapaian akademik bapa dan jumlah pendapatan keluarga. Ini menunjukkan bahawa faktor saiz keluarga memberikan impak secara langsung kepada pencapaian pelajar walaupun mereka menetap di asrama yang menyediakan suasana dan kemudahan yang sama

    Multiple Forms of Alcohol Dehydrogenase (Adh) Genes in Sago Palm: A Preliminary Study

    Flooding is a worldwide phenomenon in wetland and river areas. Excess water in the soil could produce anoxic soil condition. Sago palms in Sarawak can be found on mainly waterlogged areas. These plants are able and possibly have evolved a system for overcoming the anoxic/hypoxic conditions especially in the root section. Here we report the detection and activity of Adh gene in sago palm. The Adh enzyme was isolated, analysed on polyacrylamide and agarose gel, and detected by specific Adh staining. We found that Adh is present in all sago tissues and three variants are present based on migration on gel. We also utilised the polymerase chain reaction method to generate the PCR products by using primers that are designed from other plant species. Genomic DNA was used for this purpose and four PCR fragments were generated and the nucleotide sequence were determined. Preliminary results of nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that at least three types of Adh genes are present in sago

Penilaian berpandukan kepada Model KIPP yang diperkenalkan oleh Stufflebeam dari dimensi Input, proses dan produk. Instrumen kajian adalah soal selidik ke atas 72 responden yang terdiri dari pelajar tingkatan empat di Sekolah Menengah teknik di N.Sembilan, Johor dan Melaka. Data diproses dengan mengunakan program SPSS dengan menggunakan statistik peratus dan nilai min. Hasil kajian didapati tahap keberkesanan secara keseluruhan terhadap proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran adalah tinggi.     Effect of graphene addition on the transport critical current density of bulk (Tl0.85Cr0.15) Sr2CaCu2O7-δ superconductor

    In this work, the effect of graphene addition on the transport critical current density of (Tl0.85Cr0.15) Sr2CaCu2O7-δ (Tl-1212) superconductor was investigated. Thallium-based high temperature superconductor (HTS) with nominal starting composition (Tl0.85Cr0.15) Sr2CaCu2O7-δ was prepared using high purity oxide powders via solid state reaction method. 0.001 – 0.005 wt.% of graphene were added into Tl-1212 superconductors. The characteristic of the samples were determined by powder X-ray diffraction method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDX), electrical resistance measurements and transport critical current density measurements. The zero-resistance temperature, Tc-zero was found to decrease from 95 K to 84 K with the increase of graphene. The temperature dependence transport critical current density (Jc) of the pure and graphene added bulk samples were investigated. Jc of the non-added bulk sample was 1320 mA/cm2 at 30 K while the Jc of sample with 0.001 wt.% graphene was 3660 mA/cm2 at 30 K. Results showed that the Jc of the Tl-1212 samples decreased with increasing graphene addition. Graphene acted as impurity which is believed to perform the flux pinning effect to Tl-1212. Thus, the Jc of Tl-1212 superconductors was enhanced. The phase formation and morphology of samples Tl-1212 were also discussed in this paper

    Indeks Kemakmuran Legatum menyenaraikan lapan sub-indeks yang merangkumi 89 pemboleh ubah untuk pengukuran kemakmuran Negara.Aspek ekonomi termasuk pemboleh ubah guna tenaga dan aspek tahap pendidikan kekal sebagai penyumbang utama kepada kemakmuran sesebuah negara bersama dengan sub-indeks pentadbiran, kesihatan, keselamatan, kebebasan peribadi, modal sosial dan peluang keusahawanan.Kertas ini menumpu kepada menganalisis tren guna tenaga mengikut sektor pekerjaan dan tahap pendidikan di Malaysia sepanjang tempoh dua belas tahun bermula tahun 2001 hingga 2012.Selain daripada situasi keseluruhan Malaysia, guna tenaga mengikut sektor pekerjaan dan tahap pendidikan mengikut pecahan negeri juga diberi perhatian.Kaedah analisis siri masa (time series analysis) berdasarkan data sekunder yang diperoleh daripada Jabatan Perangkaan Malaysia merupakan kaedah utama yang digunakan.Dapatan kajian menunjukkan guna tenaga buruh bertambah pada kadar purata 2.2 peratus setahun.Sektor perkhidmatan terus merupakan bahagian terbesar daripada jumlah guna tenaga buruh sejak tahun 2004 hingga tahun 2012 dan mengalami pertumbuhan guna tenaga buruh purata 4.2 peratus setahun.Sektor yang paling banyak mengalami penurunan dalam peratusan penggunaan tenaga buruh ialah sektor pekerja mahir pertanian, perhutanan dan perikanan.Guna tenaga di Negeri Selangor jauh lebih tinggi berbanding dengan negeri-negeri lain, diikuti oleh Johor dan Sabah. Analisis juga menunjukkan bahawa berlaku pertambahan mendadak dalam bilangan tenaga kerja yang berpendidikan tinggi bagi tempoh 12 tahun. Melalui analisis terperinci terhadap taburan guna tenaga dan tahap pendidikan tenaga buruh, kami akan dapat mengetahui situasi sebenar struktur ekonomi Malaysia yang boleh dijadikan sebagai satu rujukan penting untuk menilai keberkesanan dasar pembangunan Negara dalam usaha meningkatkan kesejahteraan rakyat sebagaimana yang dihasratkan oleh kerajaan Malaysia

    Deforestation awareness among the community living near mangroves in Mukim Tanjung Kupang, Johor, Malaysia

    A study was carried out on the deforestation awareness among the community living nearest to Sungai Pulai mangrove forest under mukim (sub-district) Tanjung Kupang in Johor Bahru, Peninsular Malaysia. A Structured questionnaire was used to collect data on respondents’ socioeconomic condition, their familiarity to mangroves and awareness from six villages which have been selected randomly. Majority of the respondents were male, Malay, Muslim and from middle aged group. About 82% respondents had some level of education. Average household size was 5.5. About 71% respondents’ livelihoods were dependent on mangrove ecosystem of which 65% were fishermen, 5% aquaculture and 1% tourism. Mean monthly income of respondents was quite lower than national average income. Moreover, monthly average income of mangrove dependent group was lower than the non mangrove dependent group. About 93% of the respondents were somehow familiar to mangroves. Responden ts mean awareness score of 3.78 indicates respondents were aware about the mangroves. It was also found that male had significantly higher awareness than female for two out of ten awareness components. Likewise,mangrove dependent group had significantly higher awareness than the non- mangrove dependent group for six out of ten awareness components

    Transport critical current density of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O/Ag superconductor tapes with addition of Fe3O4 as flux pinning center

    This paper reports on the flux pinning capability of micron size Fe3O4 in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor tapes. Ag sheathed high temperature superconductor tapes with starting compositions (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (2223) and(Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-(Fe3O4)0.01 were fabricated using the powder in tube method.The Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O powders were prepared by using the co-precipitation technique.The effects of Fe3O4 addition on the microstructure, phase formation, critical temperature and transport critical current density, Jc were studied. The Jc value of the Fe3O4 added tapes is higher (6,090 A/cm2 at 77 K and 24,500 A/cm2 at 30 K, in zero field) than the non-added tapes (3,730 A/cm2 at 77 K and 13,3180 A/cm2 at 30 K, in zero field). A sudden decrease of Jc in low magnetic fields (B < 0.12 T) when applied parallel (B||) and perpendicular (B^) to the tapes surface was observed. The destruction of weak links played an important role in the early Jc suppression. The rate of decrease of Jc was observed to decrease when the magnetic field was increased further. Improvement in the flux pinning was observed in (Bi, Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-Fe3O4)0.01 tapes. This study shows that magnetic particles such as Fe3O4 can act as effective pinning centers leading to the enhancement of Jc in the system

    Effects of saline irrigation water on morphological characteristics of banana (Musa spp.)

    Banana is one of the most important food crops after rice, wheat and corn around the world. It is susceptible to a wide spectrum of non-infectious problems such as abiotic stresses resulting in restricting growth and production. Studies were conducted to determine the effects of four salinity levels (0.17 (control), 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 dS m-1) on morphological characteristics of four banana cultivars at vegetative growth stage. Banana cultivars from the Cavendish group (Williams, Malindi) and plantains group (FHIA18 and Diwan) were grown in 61 x 76 cm polyethylene bags filled with soil mixture comprising of top soil, sand and peat moss (3:1:2 v/v), with pH ranging from 6 - 6.5 and EC 0.02 mScm-1. The experiment was carried out under a rain-shelter in split-plot design with three replicates. Plants were irrigated manually. Data were collected at 3, 6 and 9 months after transplanting. The results revealed that, the number of leaves, stem height, stem girth and total leaf area were significantly affected by salinity, variety and plant age. Significant interaction was also found between salinity and variety, salinity and plant age, as well as variety and plant age. The morphological characteristics of banana were negatively affected by higher salinity levels (6.0 and 9.0 dS m-1). Under similar salinity level, cultivar Malindi had higher number of leaves, stem height, stem girth and total leaf area as compared to cultivar Williams. Among plantains banana, cultivar FHIA18 was more tolerance to high salinity levels than Diwan cultivar, while Malindi from Cavendish group shows high salt tolerant than Williams. Therefore cultivars Malindi and FHIA18 could be grown in arid and semiarid environment depend on their tolerance to high salinity level above 1.0 dS m-1

    Addition of Co3O4 to introduce pinning centre in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O/Ag tapes

    This study investigated the flux pinning capability of Co3O4 in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor tapes. The Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O powders were prepared by using the co-precipitation technique with the addition of Co3O4 as pinning centre to enhance the transport critical current density (Jc) of the system. The Ag sheathed (Bi,Pb) 2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (2223) and (Bi,Pb) 2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10- ( Co3O4)0.01 high temperature superconductor tapes were fabricated using the powder in tube method. The effects of Co3O4 addition on the microstructure, critical temperature and critical current density were studied. The Jc value of the Co3O4 added tapes increased to ~4500 A/cm2. This tape showed the highest Jc and Tc when heated at 845°C for 50 hours. XRD diffraction pattern showed that the addition of Co3O4 inhibits the 2223 phase formation. This study shows that magnetic particles can act as effective pinning centres leading to the enhancement of Jc in the system
