    The Impact of Advocacy Organizations on Low-Income Housing Policy in U.S. Cities

    Financial support for affordable housing competes with many other municipal priorities. This work seeks to explain the variation in support for affordable housing among U.S. cities with populations of 100,000 or more. Using multivariate statistical analysis, this research investigates political explanations for the level of city expenditures on housing and community with a particular interest in the influence of housing advocacy organizations (AOs). Data for the model were gathered from secondary sources, including the U.S. Census and the National Center for Charitable Statistics. Among other results, the analysis indicates that, on average, the political maturity of AOs has a statistically significant, positive effect on local housing and community development expenditures

    On exact solutions for quantum particles with spin S= 0, 1/2, 1 and de Sitter event horizon

    Exact wave solutions for particles with spin 0, 1/2 and 1 in the static coordinates of the de Sitter space-time model are examined in detail. Firstly, for a scalar particle, two pairs of linearly independent solutions are specified explicitly: running and standing waves. A known algorithm for calculation of the reflection coefficient RϵjR_{\epsilon j} on the background of the de Sitter space-time model is analyzed. It is shown that the determination of R_{\epsilon j} requires an additional constrain on quantum numbers \epsilon \rho / \hbar c >> j, where \rho is a curvature radius. When taken into account of this condition, the R_{\epsilon j} vanishes identically. It is claimed that the calculation of the reflection coefficient R_{\epsilon j} is not required at all because there is no barrier in an effective potential curve on the background of the de Sitter space-time. The same conclusion holds for arbitrary particles with higher spins, it is demonstrated explicitly with the help of exact solutions for electromagnetic and Dirac fields.Comment: 30 pages.     Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

Finally, it identifies some major current issues and developments that could not be included as the subject of full articles but that will, nevertheless, affect the evolution of community development in the coming years
