Virtual Data in CMS Analysis
The use of virtual data for enhancing the collaboration between large groups
of scientists is explored in several ways:
- by defining ``virtual'' parameter spaces which can be searched and shared
in an organized way by a collaboration of scientists in the course of their
analysis;
- by providing a mechanism to log the provenance of results and the ability
to trace them back to the various stages in the analysis of real or simulated
data;
- by creating ``check points'' in the course of an analysis to permit
collaborators to explore their own analysis branches by refining selections,
improving the signal to background ratio, varying the estimation of parameters,
etc.;
- by facilitating the audit of an analysis and the reproduction of its
results by a different group, or in a peer review context.
We describe a prototype for the analysis of data from the CMS experiment
based on the virtual data system Chimera and the object-oriented data analysis
framework ROOT. The Chimera system is used to chain together several steps in
the analysis process including the Monte Carlo generation of data, the
simulation of detector response, the reconstruction of physics objects and
their subsequent analysis, histogramming and visualization using the ROOT

Agri-food leadership case study: Pegasus Bay Wines
This is the fourth case study in a series analysing leadership in New Zealand agrifood companies. It is part of the Unlocking Export Prosperity Research Programme led by the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit (AERU) at Lincoln University. This case study examines Pegasus Bay, a winery in Waipara Valley founded by Ivan and Chris Donaldson, and now run by the next generation of Donaldsons. Their passion for wine and the craft shines through in the high-quality products they create. They focus on creating wines they enjoy, rather than being led by the market. They have built a strong brand and garnered an international audience through capitalising on sustainable practices and lifting the image of New Zealand. Achieving this has been no coincidence as founders Ivan and Chris Donaldson, and the next generation of Donaldsons â Matthew, Edward, Belinda, and Di â embody the qualities of leadership that support innovation and coordination, and align people to their vision and core purpose. Dynamical properties of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice
We study the excitation spectrum of strongly correlated lattice bosons for
the Mott-insulating phase and for the superfluid phase close to localization.
Within a Schwinger-boson mean-field approach we find two gapped modes in the
Mott insulator and the combination of a sound mode (Goldstone) and a gapped
(Higgs) mode in the superfluid. To make our findings comparable with
experimental results, we calculate the dynamic structure factor as well as the
linear response to the optical lattice modulation introduced by Stoeferle et
al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 130403 (2004)]. We find that the puzzling finite
frequency absorption observed in the superfluid phase could be explained via
the excitation of the gapped (Higgs) mode. We check the consistency of our
results with an adapted f-sum-rule and propose an extension of the experimental
technique by Stoeferle et al. to further verify our findings.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Intertwining Relations for the Deformed D1D5 CFT
The Higgs branch of the D1D5 system flows in the infrared to a
two-dimensional N=(4,4) SCFT. This system is believed to have an "orbifold
point" in its moduli space where the SCFT is a free sigma model with target
space the symmetric product of copies of four-tori; however, at the orbifold
point gravity is strongly coupled and to reach the supergravity point one needs
to turn on the four exactly marginal deformations corresponding to the blow-up
modes of the orbifold SCFT. Recently, technology has been developed for
studying these deformations and perturbing the D1D5 CFT off its orbifold point.
We present a new method for computing the general effect of a single
application of the deformation operators. The method takes the form of
intertwining relations that map operators in the untwisted sector before
application of the deformation operator to operators in the 2-twisted sector
after the application of the deformation operator. This method is
computationally more direct, and may be of theoretical interest. This line of
inquiry should ultimately have relevance for black hole physics.Comment: latex, 23 pages, 3 figure
Excited Heavy Mesons Beyond Leading Order in the Heavy Quark Expansion
We examine the decays of excited heavy mesons, including the leading power
corrections to the heavy quark limit. We find a new and natural explanation for
the large deviation of the width of the from the heavy quark
symmetry prediction. Our formalism leads to detailed predictions for the
properties of the excited bottom mesons, some of which recently have been
observed. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of the effect of power
corrections and finite meson widths on the angular distributions which may be

Comparing open and minimally invasive surgical procedures for oesophagectomy in the treatment of cancer: the ROMIO (Randomised Oesophagectomy: Minimally Invasive or Open) feasibility study and pilot trial
Localised oesophageal cancer can be curatively treated with surgery (oesophagectomy) but the procedure is complex with a risk of complications, negative effects on quality of life and a recovery period of 6-9 months. Minimal-access surgery may accelerate recovery.The ROMIO (Randomised Oesophagectomy: Minimally Invasive or Open) study aimed to establish the feasibility of, and methodology for, a definitive trial comparing minimally invasive and open surgery for oesophagectomy. Objectives were to quantify the number of eligible patients in a pilot trial; develop surgical manuals as the basis for quality assurance; standardise pathological processing; establish a method to blind patients to their allocation in the first week post surgery; identify measures of postsurgical outcome of importance to patients and clinicians; and establish the main cost differences between the surgical approaches.Pilot parallel three-arm randomised controlled trial nested within feasibility work.Two UK NHS departments of upper gastrointestinal surgery.Patients aged â„â18 years with histopathological evidence of oesophageal or oesophagogastric junctional adenocarcinoma, squamous cell cancer or high-grade dysplasia, referred for oesophagectomy or oesophagectomy following neoadjuvant chemo(radio)therapy.Oesophagectomy, with patients randomised to open surgery, a hybrid open chest and minimally invasive abdomen or totally minimally invasive access.The primary outcome measure for the pilot trial was the number of patients recruited per month, with the main trial considered feasible if at least 2.5 patients per month were recruited.During 21 months of recruitment, 263 patients were assessed for eligibility; of these, 135 (51%) were found to be eligible and 104 (77%) agreed to participate, an average of five patients per month. In total, 41 patients were allocated to open surgery, 43 to the hybrid procedure and 20 to totally minimally invasive surgery. Recruitment is continuing, allowing a seamless transition into the definitive trial. Consequently, the database is unlocked at the time of writing and data presented here are for patients recruited by 31 August 2014. Random allocation achieved a good balance between the arms of the study, which, as a high proportion of patients underwent their allocated surgery (69/79, 87%), ensured a fair comparison between the interventions. Dressing patients with large bandages, covering all possible incisions, was successful in keeping patients blind while pain was assessed during the first week post surgery. Postsurgical length of stay and risk of adverse events were within the typical range for this group of patients, with one death occurring within 30 days among 76 patients. There were good completion rates for the assessment of pain at 6 days post surgery (88%) and of the patient-reported outcomes at 6 weeks post randomisation (74%).Rapid recruitment to the pilot trial and the successful refinement of methodology indicated the feasibility of a definitive trial comparing different approaches to oesophagectomy. QCD Sum Rule Analysis of the Decays and
We use QCD sum rules to calculate the hadronic matrix elements governing the
rare decays and induced by
the flavour changing neutral current transition. We also study
relations among semileptonic and rare decay form factors. The
analysis of the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair in and of the angular asymmetry in provides us with interesting tests of the Standard Model and its

Allowable Take of Black Vultures in the Eastern United States
Black vultures (Coragyps atratus) have been increasing in density and expanding their range in the eastern United States since at least the 1960s. In many areas, their densities have increased to the level where they are causing damage to property and livestock and the number of requests for allowable take permits has increased throughout these areas. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) requires updated information to help inform the number of take permits that could reduce conflicts while meeting obligations under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.We expanded analyses used to estimate allowable take in Virginia to cover the range of black vultures in the eastern United States. We used the prescribed take level approach, which integrates demographic rates, population size estimates, and management objectives into an estimate of allowable take. We provide estimates of allowable take at 4 different scales: individual states, Bird Conservation Regions, USFWS administrative regions, and flyways. Our updated population time series provides evidence of rapidly increasing black vulture populations in many regions of the eastern United States, with an overall population estimate of approximately 4.26 million in 2015 in the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways. Estimated allowable take ranged from a few hundred individuals per year in states at the northern end of the species range to approximately 287,000/year over the entire eastern United States. The USFWS has no legal mandate regarding the spatial scale at which take should be managed and we found little biological evidence of subpopulation structure for black vultures in the eastern United States.We suggest that allowable take for the species be implemented at a scale that meets stakeholder objectives (e.g., reducing conflict, and ensuring that black vultures are not extirpated from local areas) and is efficient for administrative and monitoring purposes. Infinite Momentum Frame Calculation of Semileptonic Heavy \Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c Transitions Including HQET Improvements
We calculate the transition form factors that occur in heavy -type
baryon semileptonic decays as e.g. in . We use Bauer-Stech-Wirbel type infinite momentum frame wave
functions for the heavy -type baryons which we assume to consist of a
heavy quark and a light spin-isospin zero diquark system. The form factors at are calculated from the overlap integrals of the initial and final
-type baryon states. To leading order in the heavy mass scale the
structure of the form factors agrees with the HQET predictions including the
normalization at zero recoil. The leading order -dependence of the form
factors is extracted by scaling arguments. By comparing the model form factors
with the HQET predictions at we obtain a consistent set of
model form factors up to . With our preferred choice of
parameter values we find that the contribution of the non-leading form factor
is practically negligible. We use our form factor predictions to compute rates,
spectra and various asymmetry parameters for the semi-leptonic decay
