Eigenvalue spectra of complex networks
We examine the eigenvalue spectrum, (), of the adjacency matrix of a random scale-free network with an average of p edges per vertex using the replica method. We show how in the dense limit, when p , one can obtain two relatively simple coupled equations whose solution yields () for an arbitrary complex network. For scale-free graphs, with degree distribution exponent , we obtain an exact expression for the eigenvalue spectrum when = 3 and show that () ~ 1/2-1 for large . In the limit we recover known results for the Erdös–Rényi random graph
"How May I Help You?": Modeling Twitter Customer Service Conversations Using Fine-Grained Dialogue Acts
Given the increasing popularity of customer service dialogue on Twitter,
analysis of conversation data is essential to understand trends in customer and
agent behavior for the purpose of automating customer service interactions. In
this work, we develop a novel taxonomy of fine-grained "dialogue acts"
frequently observed in customer service, showcasing acts that are more suited
to the domain than the more generic existing taxonomies. Using a sequential
SVM-HMM model, we model conversation flow, predicting the dialogue act of a
given turn in real-time. We characterize differences between customer and agent
behavior in Twitter customer service conversations, and investigate the effect
of testing our system on different customer service industries. Finally, we use
a data-driven approach to predict important conversation outcomes: customer
satisfaction, customer frustration, and overall problem resolution. We show
that the type and location of certain dialogue acts in a conversation have a
significant effect on the probability of desirable and undesirable outcomes,
and present actionable rules based on our findings. The patterns and rules we
derive can be used as guidelines for outcome-driven automated customer service

Metabolic Energy Correlates of Heart Rate Variability Spectral Power Associated with a 900-Calorie Challenge
We studied healthy males challenged with a 900 Cal test beverage and correlated EE with the raw (ms2) and normalized units (nu) of total power (TP), low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) and VLF spectral power of heart rate variability (HRV). The correlations were evaluated during 20 min of normal breathing (NB, control) and 20 min of paced breathing (PB) at 12 breaths·min−1 (0.2 Hz). EE was not significantly correlated with any of the HRV variables before the metabolic challenge. After the challenge, EE was positively correlated with LF/HF and with VLF; VLF was also positively correlated with LF/HF during both NB and PB. These findings suggest that EE may be a correlate of LF/HF and of VLF spectral power of HRV in healthy adolescent/young adult males. The association of lower resting energy expenditure with lower amounts of VLF spectral power may occur in individuals with predilections for obese phenotypes
Spiny Mice (\u3cem\u3eAcomys\u3c/em\u3e) Exhibit Attenuated Hallmarks of Aging and Rapid Cell Turnover after UV Exposure in the Skin Epidermis
The study of long-lived and regenerative animal models has revealed diverse protective responses to stressors such as aging and tissue injury. Spiny mice (Acomys) are a unique mammalian model of skin wound regeneration, but their response to other types of physiological skin damage has not been investigated. In this study, we examine how spiny mouse skin responds to acute UVB damage or chronological aging compared to non-regenerative C57Bl/6 mice (M. musculus). We find that, compared to M. musculus, the skin epidermis in A. cahirinus experiences a similar UVB-induced increase in basal cell proliferation but exhibits increased epidermal turnover. Notably, A. cahirinus uniquely form a suprabasal layer co-expressing Keratin 14 and Keratin 10 after UVB exposure concomitant with reduced epidermal inflammatory signaling and reduced markers of DNA damage. In the context of aging, old M. musculus animals exhibit typical hallmarks including epidermal thinning, increased inflammatory signaling and senescence. However, these age-related changes are absent in old A. cahirinus skin. Overall, we find that A. cahirinus have evolved novel responses to skin damage that reveals new aspects of its regenerative phenotype
Layered architecture for quantum computing
We develop a layered quantum computer architecture, which is a systematic
framework for tackling the individual challenges of developing a quantum
computer while constructing a cohesive device design. We discuss many of the
prominent techniques for implementing circuit-model quantum computing and
introduce several new methods, with an emphasis on employing surface code
quantum error correction. In doing so, we propose a new quantum computer
architecture based on optical control of quantum dots. The timescales of
physical hardware operations and logical, error-corrected quantum gates differ
by several orders of magnitude. By dividing functionality into layers, we can
design and analyze subsystems independently, demonstrating the value of our
layered architectural approach. Using this concrete hardware platform, we
provide resource analysis for executing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms for
integer factoring and quantum simulation, finding that the quantum dot
architecture we study could solve such problems on the timescale of days.Comment: 27 pages, 20 figure
Determining the Thickness of Aliphatic Alcohol Monolayers Covalently Attached to Silicon Oxide Surfaces Using Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
The thickness of alcohol based monolayers on silicon oxide surfaces were investigated using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). Advantages of using alcohols as building blocks for the formation of monolayers include their widespread availability, ease of handling, and stability against side reactions. Recent progress in microwave assisted reactions demonstrated the ease of forming uniform monolayers with alcohol based reagents. The studies shown herein provide a detailed investigation of the thickness of monolayers prepared from a series of aliphatic alcohols of different chain lengths. Monolayers of 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol, 1-decanol, and 1-dodecanol were each successfully formed through microwave assisted reactions and characterized by ARXPS techniques. The thickness of these monolayers consistently increased by ∼1.0 Å for every additional methylene (CH2) within the hydrocarbon chain of the reagents. Tilt angles of the molecules covalently attached to silicon oxide surfaces were estimated to be ∼35° for each type of reagent. These results were consistent with the observations reported for thiol based or silane based monolayers on either gold or silicon oxide surfaces, respectively. The results of this study also suggest that the alcohol based monolayers are uniform at a molecular level
Expressing one’s feelings and listening to others increases emotional intelligence: a pilot study of Asian medical students
<p>Background: There has been considerable interest in Emotional Intelligence (EI) in undergraduate medical education, with respect to student selection and admissions, health and well-being and academic performance. EI is a significant component of the physician-patient relationship. The emotional well-being of the physician is, therefore, a significant component in patient care. The aim is to examine the measurement of TEIQue-SF in Asian medical students and to explore how the practice of listening to the feelings of others and expressing one’s own feelings influences an individual’s EI, set in the context of the emotional well-being of a medical practitioner.</p>
<p>Methods: A group of 183 international undergraduate medical students attended a half-day workshop (WS) about mental-health and well-being. They completed a self-reported measure of EI on three occasions, pre- and post-workshop, and a 1-year follow-up.</p>
<p>Result: The reliability of TEIQue-SF was high and the reliabilities of its four factors were acceptable. There were strong correlations between the TEIQue-SF and personality traits. A paired t-test indicated significant positive changes after the WS for all students (n=181, p= .014), male students (n=78, p= .015) and non-Japanese students (n=112, p= .007), but a repeated measures analysis showed that one year post-workshop there were significant positive changes for all students (n=55, p= .034), female students (n=31, p= .007), especially Japanese female students (n=13, p= .023). Moreover, 80% of the students reported that they were more attentive listeners, and 60% agreed that they were more confident in dealing with emotional issues, both within themselves and in others, as a result of the workshop.</p>
<p>Conclusion: This study found the measurement of TEIQue-SF is appropriate and reliable to use for Asian medical students. The mental health workshop was helpful to develop medical students’ EI but showed different results for gender and nationality. The immediate impact on the emotional awareness of individuals was particularly significant for male students and the non-Japanese group. The impact over the long term was notable for the significant increase in EI for females and Japanese. Japanese female students were more conscious about emotionality. Emotion-driven communication exercises might strongly influence the development of students’ EI over a year.</p>
Investment Opportunities Forecasting: Extending the Grammar of a GP-based Tool
In this paper we present a new version of a GP financial forecasting tool, called EDDIE 8. The novelty of this version is that it allows the GP to search in the space of indicators, instead of using pre-specified ones. We compare EDDIE 8 with its predecessor, EDDIE 7, and find that new and improved solutions can be found. Analysis also shows that, on average, EDDIE 8's best tree performs better than the one of EDDIE 7. The above allows us to characterize EDDIE 8 as a valuable forecasting tool
