    Models of the diffuse radar backscatter from Mars

    The topographies of several debris flow units near the Mount St. Helens Volcano were measured at lateral scales of millimeters to meters in September 1990. The objective was to measure the surface roughness of the debris flows at scales smaller than, on the order of, and larger that the radar wavelength of common remote sensing radars. A laser profiling system and surveying instruments were used to obtain elevation data for square areas that varied in size from 10 to 32 cm. The elevation data were converted to estimates of the power spectrum of surface roughness. The conversions were based upon standard periodogram techniques, and upon a modified spectral estimation technique that was developed

    The author has identified the following significant results. An area inventory was performed for three southeast Texas counties (Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto) totaling 0.65 million hectares. The inventory was performed using a two level hierarchy. Level 1 was divided into forestland, rangeland, and other land. Forestland was separated into Level 2 categories: pine, hardwood, and mixed; rangeland was not separated further. Results consisted of area statistics for each county and for the entire study site for pine, hardwood, mixed, rangeland, and other land. Color coded county classification maps were produced for the May data set, and procedures were developed and tested

    Thoracic Pain in a Collegiate Runner (Case Report)

    This case study describes the process of examination, re-examination, and intervention for a collegiate runner with mechanical thoracic pain preventing athletic participation and limiting daily function. Unimpaired function fully returned in less than 3 weeks with biweekly sessions to re-establish normal and painfree thoracic mechanics via postural hygiene, exercise, mobilization, and manipulation. The outcome of this case study supports the original hypothesis that the pattern of impairments was in fact responsible for the functional limitations and disability in this athlete. At the time of publication the athlete was without functional limitations and had fully returned to competitive sprinting for the university track team

    Self-referenced characterization of space-time couplings in near single-cycle laser pulses

    We report on the characterization of space-time couplings in high energy sub-2-cycle 770nm laser pulses using a self-referencing single-shot method. Using spatially-encoded arrangement filter-based spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SEA-F-SPIDER) we characterize few-cycle pulses with a wave-front rotation of 2.8x?10^11 rev/sec (1.38 mrad per half-cycle) and pulses with pulse front tilts ranging from to -0.33 fs/um to -3.03 fs/um.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    The JJ Shuttle and In-Game Defensive Basketball Performance for Collegiate Male Players

    Agility is widely considered an important skill related fitness component in the game of basketball. Players are tasked to execute successful and efficient accelerations, sprints, abrupt stops, quick changes of direction, varying vertical jumps, and many times a combination of these motor skills. Agility can greatly impact the skills required for an athlete to excel on the court. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the agility of basketball players affected their in-game performance during regular season conference contests. The subjects (N = 10) in this study were members of a collegiate menā€™s basketball team. Agility of the subjects were measured using the JJ Shuttle which produces four segment times and a total time. These five shuttle times were compared for correlation to their in-game performance during regular season conference play. Performance measures of interest were steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds. A Pearson Correlation was conducted between the JJ Shuttle time segments and total time and the steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds of each player. There was a positive correlation between the duration of Segment 3 of the JJ Shuttle and the number of blocks (r = 0.65, p \u3c 0.05). The results of this study suggest the agility of male collegiate basketball players, as measured by the JJ Shuttle, does not have a strong correlation and is a poor predictor of the in-game performance of steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds. It is suggested that future studies increase the sample size and expand the subject parameters to determine a more holistic representation of this relationship

    Performance of NACA Eight-stage Axial-flow Compressor Designed on the Basis of Airfoil Theory

    The NACA has conducted an investigation to determine the performance that can be obtained from a multistage axial-flow compressor based on airfoil research. A theory was developed; an eight-stage axial-flow compressor was designed, constructed, and tested. The performance of the compressor was determined for speeds from 5000 to 14,000 r.p.m with varying air flow at each speed. Most of the tests were made with air at room temperature. The performance was determined in accordance with the Committee's recommended procedure for testing superchargers. The expected performance was obtained, showing that a multistage compressor of high efficiency can be designed by the application of airfoil theory
