Genetics of intercellular signalling in C. elegans

Cell-cell interactions play a significant role in controlling cell fate during development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. It has been found that two genes, glp-1 and lin-12, are required for many of these decisions. glp-1 is required for induction of mitotic proliferation in the germline by the somatic distal tip cell and for induction of the anterior pharynx early in embryogenesis. lin-12 is required for the interactions between cells of equivalent developmental potential, which allow them to take on different fates. Comparison of these two genes on a molecular level indicates that they are similar in sequence and organization, suggesting that the mechanisms of these two different sets of cell-cell interactions are similar

Population change and fiscal stress in Missouri's third class counties

"During the recent recession, local governments struggled to manage budgets as revenues dropped. Because the recession was deeper and longer than any in the past half-century, with a slower recovery, reserve funds were not sufficient. With lower revenue, the majority of local governments struggled to meet the needs and expectations of citizens. Since the Great Recession of 2008-2009, the budgets of local governments have not recovered at the same pace as the economy as a whole. The recession may have created greater demands for government services, and tax bases may have been affected by more cautious spending by businesses and consumers. Slow local budget recovery also may be due to state government decisions, such as changes in tax laws, stagnant or lower state aid, taxation constraints and increasing state mandated services (Aldag et al., 2017). An example of a state tax constraint is Missouri's Hancock Amendment, which limits both state and local governments' abilities to raise taxes. Elected local officials cannot raise taxes without voter approval (Kevin-Myers and Hembree, 2012). Finally, local governments' decisions on taxes and tax incentives have major impacts on their own revenues (White, 2017)."--Page 1.Written by Judith I. Self-Compassion as a Resource of Resilience

From risk to resilience and from mental illness only to including mental well-being, a paradigm shift occurs within the field of clinical psychology. Resilience, consisting of recovery as well as sustainability and growth processes, pertains to the successful (and common) adaptation to adversity. This includes a return to baseline functioning or a new emotional equilibrium, as well as maintaining approach motivations toward personal values and goals. There is growing evidence that self-compassion is an inner resource that promotes resilience. Self-compassion aspects of mindfulness, self-kindness, and common humanity facilitate both short-term and long-term adaptation processes. Using examples of going through war (veterans) and going through cancer, this chapter illustrates how self-compassion can contribute to decreased mental distress (including anxiety and loneliness) and increased mental well-being (including emotional stability and self-care behaviors). Compassion-based interventions, both face-to-face and in online format, can contribute to facilitating resilience in the face of adversity. Future research should further investigate the different ways in which self-compassion can promote resilience, taking into account both mental distress and mental well-being aspects of mental health

ASCMEI.T.-An online tool to capture new digital and technological ideas and facilitate the development of new products to help individuals on the autistic spectrum

Our app, ASCMEI.T. encourages people on the autistic spectrum; their parents, carers, teachers and connected professionals, to suggest digital and technical solutions to help people with autism. The app allows people to record and upload videos, demonstrating ideas that could help people with autism in daily life. These videos were collected on a private video channel called VIMEO, with examples shared on the ASCMEI.T. web-site to encourage wider participation with the app. Subsequently, the collated ideas were evaluated by researchers for novelty and potential value for people with autism and it is envisaged that one of the ideas would be suitable for a kick starter fund raising project to run later this year. Currently an analysis of the submissions is being carried out to identify whether or not existing products are actually already available

Experiences of Self-Criticism and Self-Compassion in People Diagnosed With Cancer:A Multimethod Qualitative Study

Objective: Self-criticism is a self-condemning and self-compassion a supportive style of self-to-self relating. These concepts have increasingly been studied in people with cancer, but mainly with quantitative studies. This study is the first to explore how adult cancer patients experience self-criticism and self-compassion in the context of their illness. Design: A multimethod qualitative study design was used, combining individual and group semi-structured interviews. Participants were 26 people with cancer who familiarized themselves with the topic by doing various self-compassion exercises for 2 weeks prior to the interview. Individual and group interviews were analyzed together using thematic analysis. Results: Four themes regarding self-criticism were identified: (1) being harsh or strict with yourself, (2) feeling guilty or angry, (3) feeling useless or like a burden, (4) feeling ashamed and not wanting to show weakness. Six themes regarding self-compassion were identified: (1) being mild to yourself, (2) guarding your boundaries, (3) accepting the illness and limitations, (4) maintaining a positive perspective, (5) connecting to others, and (6) taking responsibility for your health. Conclusion: Our findings offer insights into practical and daily life experiences of self-criticism and self-compassion of people with cancer, which can aid the further development of theory, scales and interventions
