    Comparative potential of black tea leaves waste to granular activated carbon in adsorption of endocrine disrupting compounds from aqueous solution

    The adsorption properties and mechanics of selected endocrine disrupting compounds; 17 β-estradiol, 17 α – ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A on locally available black tea leaves waste and granular activated carbon were investigated. The results obtained indicated that the kinetics of adsorption were pH, adsorbent dose, contact time and temperature dependent with equilibrium being reached at 20 to 40 minutes for tea leaves waste and 40 to 60 minutes for granular activated compound. Maximum adsorption capacities of 3.46, 2.44 and 18.35 mg/g were achieved for tea leaves waste compared to granular activated compound capacities of 4.01, 2.97 and 16.26 mg/g for 17 β- estradiol, 17 α-ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A respectively. Tea leaves waste adsorption followed pseudo-first order kinetics while granular activated compound fitted better to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The experimental isotherm data for both tea leaves waste and granular activated compound showed a good fit to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models with the Langmuir model showing the best fit. The thermodynamic and kinetic data for the adsorption indicated that the adsorption process for tea leaves waste was predominantly by physical adsorption while the granular activated compound adsorption was more chemical in nature. The results have demonstrated the potential of waste tea leaves for the adsorptive removal of endocrine disrupting compounds from water

    Digital phenotyping of coconut and morphological traits associated with eriophyid mite infestation

    Observations were recorded on traits associated with mite infestation related at two stages of button on six different coconut cultivars over three years. Highly significant correlation was found between mite damage score with color or weight of tepal. Step-wise multiple regression of the data analysis showed color of inner tepal as major trait associated with infestation by eriophyid mite. Other traits are ratio of tepal weight to tepal area, per cent of buttons with pink discoloration or with resin, tepals of regular aestivation and gap between fruit and tepal. Digital phenotype data of 83 image files were used to calculate color signature and correlated the same to mite damage score over three years. Red spectral values were found to vary from 14 to 251, green values to 12 to 237 and blue to vary from 5 to 183. Spectral values red max, green max, 3* Red + Green max had high significant negative correlation (>-0.4) with mite damage. Color and firmness of fruits and tepals of three coconut varieties were further analyzed where, fruits and tepals of COD variety showed high red/green (a* value of Hunterlab) >12. Firmness of 3 month old tepal and fruit of Benualim (BGRT) tall variety was (penetrometer reading >38) higher than other varieties

    Development of a Dwarf x Tall coconut hybrid ‘Kalpa Samrudhi’

    An evaluation trial conducted over 28 years on coconut hybrid combinations has resulted in identification of a superior, high yielding Dwarf x Tall hybrid, named as ‘Kalpa Samrudhi’ involving IND 058S as female parent and IND 069S as male parent. The results revealed that the hybrid is better performing over other hybrids and local control with higher fruit yield (117 fruits palm-1 year-1), high copra out turn (25.72 kg palm-1 year-1 or 4.5 t ha-1 year-1 copra) and estimated oil recovery of 3.04 tonnes ha-1 under rainfed conditions of Kerala. The palms of the hybrid are semi tall, take an average of 45 months for initiation of flowering under rainfed conditions, possess good tender nut water quality (TSS 6o Brix) and higher quantity (346 mL per tender nut). The tender nut water has Na content of 35.1 ppm and K content of 2370 ppm. The hybrid recorded 30.27 per cent more nut yield, 66.05 per cent more copra yield and 73.71 per cent more oil yield over another released Dwarf x Tall hybrid ‘Chandra Sankara’. The seedlings of the hybrid are more vigorous, producing higher number of leaves within 12 months, having higher leaf area and dry weight indicating precocity in growth and development. The flowering, morphological and fruit component traits of the hybrid were compared with parental palms. The characteristics of this hybrid and its performance indicate potential to increase the production and productivity of coconut

    In situ approach for rapid characterization to aid on farm conservation of coconut germplasm - A case study of two ecotypes from West coast of India

    Characterization and evaluation of coconut germplasm have conventionally been undertaken in ex situ gene banks, which take a minimum duration of fifteen years. On the other hand, utilization of coconut populations in situ can effectively reduce the time required for characterization of the populations. Hence, a concept to make a paradigm shift in the existing approach of coconut germplasm characterization is advocated in this study with a view to broaden the conservation base and facilitate inclusion of identified diverse ecotypes. The methodology has been applied to identify, locate and characterize two tall coconut ecotypes viz., Bedakam and Kuttiyadi, from northern Kerala. Agronomic traits, viz., higher number of nuts per palm, higher copra content and better performance under marginal management conditions along with adaptation to the environment, were the major reasons for preference of these ecotypes among the farmers. Comparison of the two ecotypes revealed that the traits, trunk girth, length of internode, number of leaves, number of bunches with nuts, number of nuts, shell weight, husked fruit weight and fruit weight were higher in Kuttiyadi than in Bedakam ecotype. On the other hand, number of leaf scars per meter, length of inflorescence, fruit breadth, husk weight, nut cavity volume and copra weight were higher in Bedakam compared to Kuttiyadi ecotype. Relevance, utility and importance of the study are discussed from the perspective of effective utilization of the coconut diversity in situ and their possible further use in coconut improvement efforts through conservation strategies

    Seasonal abundance and host plants of coconut stick insect (Graeffea crouanii Le Guillou) in coconut plantations of Fiji islands

    Field survey conducted in major coconut growing regions in the three Fiji islands viz., Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and Taveuni, revealed the presence of only one pest species of stick insect, Graeffea crouanii. Temperature had a significant effect on the level of infestation in the farms surveyed, while the effect of rainfall and humidity on the infestation was insignificant. Severe infestation was observed in isolated pockets, and the pest distribution was discontinuous in the surveyed areas. On a damage scale index, the insect infestation on coconut palms ranged from 0 to 4 grades. The peak increase of G. crouanii populations was from November to April in wet season at each of the three hotspots: Namaumada (Viti Levu), Dawara (Vanua Levu), and Salialevu (Taveuni). The occurrence of G. crouanii at varying damage levels in the present study may be attributed to the presence of sparse coconut palms in isolated coconut plantations. The field survey identified many alternate host plants of G. crouanii in the two plant families viz., Arecaceae and Pandanaceae. The information on the seasonal abundance and infestation levels of G. crouanii and its alternate host plants are discussed in formulating location-specific pest management strategies

    The occupancy-abundance relationship and sampling designs using occupancy to monitor populations of Asian bears

    Designing a population monitoring program for Asian bears presents challenges associated with their low densities and detectability, generally large home ranges, and logistical or resource constraints. The use of an occupancy-based method to monitor bear populations can be appropriate under certain conditions given the mechanistic relationship between occupancy and abundance. The form of the occupancy\u2013abundance relationship is dependent on species-specific characteristics such as home range size and population density, as well as study area size. To assess the statistical power of tests to detect population change of Asian bears, we conducted a study using a range of scenarios by simulating spatially explicit individual-based capture-recapture data from a demographically open model. Simulations assessed the power to detect changes in population density via changes in site-level occupancy or abundance through time, estimated using a standard occupancy model or a Royle-Nichols model, both with point detectors (representing camera traps). We used IUCN Red List criteria as a guide in selection of two population decline scenarios (20% and 50%), but we chose a shorter time horizon (10 years = 1 bear generation), meaning that declines were steeper than used for IUCN criteria (3 generations). Our simulations detected population declines of 50% with high power (>0.80) and low false positive rates (FPR: incorrectly detecting a decline) (<0.10) when detectors were spaced at > 0.67 times the home range diameter (home-range spacing ratio: HRSR, a measure of spatial correlation), such that bears would tend to overlap no more than two detectors. There was high (0.85) correlation between realized occupancy and N in these scenarios. The FPR increased as the HRSR decreased because of spatial correlation in the occupancy process induced when individual home ranges overlap multiple detectors. The mean statistical power to detect more gradual population declines (20% in 10 years) with HRSR > 0.67 was low for occupancy models 0.22 (maximum power 0.67) and Royle-Nichols models (0.24; maximum power 0.67), suggesting that declines of this magnitude may not be described reliably with 10 years of monitoring. Our results demonstrated that under many realistic scenarios that we explored, false positive rates were unacceptably high. We highlight that when designing occupancy studies, the spacing between point detectors be at least 0.67 times the diameter of the home range size of the larger sex (e.g., males) when the assumptions of the spatial capture-recapture model used for simulation are met

    Outcome of single breech term deliveries at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, South Eastern Nigeria: a five year review

    Background: The best mode of delivery of breech presentation for optimum neonatal outcome has been a subject of controversy over the years. Aim of current study was to determine the pattern of distribution, incidence, mode of delivery and outcome of singleton breech presentations at term among parturients at this centre.Methods: This was a retrospective study of singleton breech term delivery at the federal medical centre, Owerri between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2011. Singleton breech term deliveries were identified from the labor ward register and the hospital numbers extracted to retrieve the case notes from the medical records department of the hospital. Some data were collected and analysed.Results: There were a total of 9624 deliveries during the study period, out of which 328 (3.4%) were singleton breech presentation at term. Term singleton breech was commoner in multiparous 200 (61%) than in primiparous 128 (39%) women. Extended (Frank) breech was the commonest type of breech presentation (60.4%) followed by flexed (complete) breech (36.0%) and footling breech (3.6%) was the least common. Assisted vaginal breech delivery was conducted in 66.2% of cases while 27.4% were delivered by emergency caesarean section and 6.4% of cases were delivered through elective caesarean section. There were one maternal and 24 perinatal death. Twenty one (87.5%) of perinatal deaths those occurred in unbooked mothers.Conclusion: Although assisted vaginal breech delivery for singleton breech term delivery was commonly performed in our centre, elective caesarean delivery gives the better neonatal outcome for fetuses presenting breech.
