Exploratory Analysis of Functional Data via Clustering and Optimal Segmentation

We propose in this paper an exploratory analysis algorithm for functional data. The method partitions a set of functions into $K$ clusters and represents each cluster by a simple prototype (e.g., piecewise constant). The total number of segments in the prototypes, $P$, is chosen by the user and optimally distributed among the clusters via two dynamic programming algorithms. The practical relevance of the method is shown on two real world datasets

Search for High-energy Neutrinos from Binary Neutron Star Merger GW170817 with ANTARES, IceCube, and the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst (GRB) that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM), and the Anti-Coincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the GeV-EeV energy range using the Antares, IceCube, and Pierre Auger Observatories. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ± 500 s around the merger time. Additionally, no MeV neutrino burst signal was detected coincident with the merger. We further carried out an extended search in the direction of the source for high-energy neutrinos within the 14 day period following the merger, but found no evidence of emission. We used these results to probe dissipation mechanisms in relativistic outflows driven by the binary neutron star merger. The non-detection is consistent with model predictions of short GRBs observed at a large off-axis angle

From Swedish track and field to International Olympic Committee presidency : Sigfrid Edström (1893 - 1952)

À la fin du XIXe siècle, les représentants suédois de la culture physique sont dotés d'un savoir-faire et une créativité reconnus en Europe. Dans les années folles, il n'est pas étonnant de constater leur présence dans les organes sportifs dirigeants tels que la Fédération Internationale Athlétisme Amateur, lorsque les échanges entre les premiers clubs Européens s'organisent. Au retour de la Grande Guerre, le recrutement de Sigfried Edstrom au sein du 20, marque l'arrivée d'un puissant chef d'entreprise suédois dans l'administration internationale des sports. En tant que représentant d'une démocratie sociale, il défend une conception plus populaire des sports. Membre d'un CIO identifié comme conservateur, ils nouent des contacts avec les hommes de la Deuxième Internationale, dans le cadre du Bureau International du Travail et de la Société des Nations. Toutefois, les discussions n'aboutissent pas. Dans les années 1930, avec lui, le CIO négocie les jeux olympiques avec l'Allemagne d'Asie et le Japon impérial, au détriment de sa crédibilité. Après la capitulation allemande, dans un CIO en survie, Edstrom apparaît néanmoins comme l'un des rares hommes susceptibles de prendre les commandes
