Inducing odd-frequency triplet superconducting correlations in a normal metal

This work discusses theoretically the interplay between the superconducting and ferromagnetic proximity effects, in a diffusive normal metal strip in contact with a superconductor and a non-uniformly magnetized ferromagnetic insulator. The quasiparticle density of states of the normal metal shows clear qualitative signatures of triplet correlations with spin one (TCS1). When one goes away from the superconduting contact, TCS1 focus at zero energy under the form of a peak surrounded by dips, which show a typical spatial scaling behavior. This behavior can coexist with a focusing of singlet correlations and triplet correlations with spin zero at finite but subgap energies. The simultaneous observation of both effects would enable an unambigous characterization of TCS1.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letter

Patterns use motif, repetition, color, geometry, craft, technology, and space to communicate place, time, and concept. Through this research and analysis, built environments - their designers, occupants, construction, and context - can be better understood. Audrey Paiva, VCU Interior Design BFA 2021, selected the Cusp pattern for the 2018 Pattern Research Project. The text below is excerpted from the student’s work: “The main shapes used in Athos Bulcao’s work are circle and square forms. This is extremely significant because the traditional art of the Indians of Brazil features among other forms, the circle and the square. Also, within his work there is “admiration for different phases of Western art, particularly Byzantine art (form, color, texture)”. Most of Bulcao’s work was created right after the switch of the new capital city to Brasilia and “a radical change for Brazil. Athos does not believe in inspiration. Blind identification of an unknown interleaved convolutional code

We give here an efficient method to reconstruct the block interleaver and recover the convolutional code when several noisy interleaved codewords are given. We reconstruct the block interleaver without assumption on its structure. By running some experimental tests we show the efficiency of this method even with moderate noise

This work was prepared as part of the EU–Canada project - The Changing Landscape of Justice and Home Affairs Cooperation in the European Union and EU-Canada Relations – funded by the European Commission, Directorate-General for External Relations, Relations with the US and Canada. This project assesses the relations between the European Union (EU) and Canada in the area of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA). It aims at facilitating a better understanding of the concepts, nature, implications and future prospects related to the Europeanisation of JHA in the EU, as well as its role and dilemmas in the context of EU-Canada relations. The current Canadian system for naming and deporting non-citizens on grounds of national security reflects the influence of several salient trends in post- 9/11 policy making in Canada: judicial minimalism, the adoption of the most restrictive (as opposed to least restrictive) alternative that does not tip over into unconstitutionality, and the avoidance of political risk by following precedents already set by other jurisdictions. In this respect, the UK has been a clear source of inspiration for Canadian courts and parliamentarians regarding Special Advocates and control orders

Volunteer Vetting Process within Nonprofit Organizations

This report uses multiple Ohio chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters to analyze how children-centered nonprofit organizations manage the tension between efficiently and successfully meeting their objectives and ensuring child safety via their volunteer vetting processes. Organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters that rely heavily on volunteer participation face many risks when vetting volunteers. The process used to vet these individuals, including recruitment, screening, acceptance, and certification, is lengthy; however, there is a buildup of demand for volunteers while this process is taking place. This research looks to understand if the vetting processes are able to balance safety of children with efficiency of the process. Several methods were used for compiling data: internal surveys within Big Brothers Big Sisters; analysis of financial reports and grants of nonprofit organizations; and analysis of donor reports for these same organizations. The data accumulated within this research serves to determine if and how the vetting processes used by Big Brothers Big Sisters to vet potential volunteers is both successful and quick. The Rhyming Peg Mnemonic Device Applied to Learning the Mohs Scale of Hardness

NOTE: This is a large file, 55.7mb in size! This article describes the use of the rhyming peg mnemonic device to teach Moh's scale of hardness. The "pegs" consist of a set of words, each rhyming with a number from one to ten, to which the mineral names are linked. The mnemonic drawings are incorporated into a poem. This technique is effective because it is meaningful, helps students organize information, provides many associations, uses the creative thinking skill of visualization of images, and focuses student attention.
